The question is if it will outperform the RX 480
However, to answer your question, what we know it has 1280 shader cores; exactly half a 1080. Considering the 970 performs at 55% of a 1080, it should perform at or near 970 levels, especially as smaller Nvidia GPU's traditionally have reached higher clocks than the larger ones.
I expect the TDP to be around 110 watts.
Do people really buy a new GPU every generation?
A HD 7850 is still fast enough for 1080p.

While I am still on an HD7850, you really can't play newer games at the highest settings on 1080p.
Not that I play a lot of modern games, but even Morrowind with MGSO struggles to get even 30 fps in some areas.
Great card though. Maybe I'll upgrade to an RX480 but I'll probably wait another year.
Then again, might be nice getting a decent new GPU so I can do some heavy OpenCL shit that doesn't run like crap, without paying out the ass for it.

No one chooses between current gen new and last gen new if they're near equal performance and price; and I doubt Nvidia will cut the 970, they traditionally haven't done so when the replacements come.

GTX 970 had eight ROP's and a Memory Controller disabled, but it was advertised as having them all intact. As a side effect, the last 512mb sector of the 4gb of memory onboard, is tied over the other 7 memory controllers but gets accessed at 1/7th the speed, making it essentially useless.
ie, it was advertised as a 4gb card, but it only has 3.5gb that is useful.

There is no way it will outperform rx480. So why would I even? The 960 price is higher and so will the 1060 be. Its the price point where nivavidia cant offer competition to (i)amd(omination). Also who the heck would buy 1070 if you can get 2x rx480 or full polaris 10? Also the efficiency looks better for ayymd, my 550 seasonic psu is enough to feed them plus a 95w cpu.
