the upgrade to windows 10 did that I think. Restoring grub is extremely easy. You boot a live CD, chroot into your old distro, install grub and then run grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg -- but if you didn't know that, I don't think you were a "serious" Linux user or at least not for a long time.
