The student who shot and killed his engineering professor and then himself at a Los Angeles university had accused the professor of stealing his code.
In a blog post on March 10, Mainak Sarkar, 38, said Professor William Klug, 39, "is not the kind of person when you think of a professor. He is a very sick person. I urge every new student coming to UCLA to stay away from this guy."
"I was this guy's PhD student. We had personal differences. He cleverly stole all my code and gave it another student. He made me really sick. Your enemy is your enemy. But your friend can do a lot more harm. Be careful about whom you trust. Stay away from this sick guy." The post has since been taken down.
Nearly three months after posting it Sarkar drove from his home in Minnesota to Los Angeles where he confronted and gunned down Professor Klug at the university's engineering complex before an heroing.
An unnamed UCLA source as saying the allegation that Klug stole his student's code was "absolutely untrue."
Sarkar had left a "kill list" at his home. One name on it was Professor Klug's and another a different UCLA professor, who is thought to have been unharmed. Police also discovered the body of a woman in Minnesota but have yet to release her identity. Her name was also on the list. Police did not say whether there were more names.
Sarkar left a suicide note at the scene of, the full details of which have not been made public, but the police did say it led them to his house in Minnesota after Sarkar asked whoever found the note to feed his kitten.
LAPD chief Charlie Beck said at a press conference that there was evidence of "mental issues" with respect to Sarkar. He also noted that Klug and colleagues said that Sarkar had exhibited odd behavior, but that they didn't view him as a threat.
Sarkar was one of a six-member research group researching computational biomechanics under Klug's supervision. In 2013, he had thanked Klug for acting as his mentor in his PhD dissertation.

I recently got my citizenship, so I've been through the whole painful process.
It's kind of a point system. If you are shit at STEM, you better be fluent as fuck in English. If you're shit in English, you better have some amazing skills. You can also be somewhere inbetween, which is what most H1B's are at.
The citizenship part has a literal list of your various attributes (history, all the shit you had to pass to get that far, employment, etc), and then the immigration officer will count up all the "bad" stuff right in front of you and if your number is too high, you don't get naturalized that day. The "bad" stuff can be anything from misspelling something on the form to being in a society or group that is deemed undesirable (does not have to be a radical group).
I grew up in the States though and I do have my EE degree so I was a shoe-in. Also I'm not from India.

Let me tell you something about universities, professors, and grad student's work. If you are any kind of smart, as a grad student, you will never show your professor any kind of lone research or ground breaking work you're doing. Why? Because those motherfuckers will steal it. They have to rehash their old research since they can't think of anything new, or they have a saturated field with little to no funding. This isn't anything new, at all. It's happened for years, and you have to be extremely careful. Either drop out and produce your product to a company if you're in a business or non science related field, or just never tell your professor about what you're working on besides your thesis.
Yes, he broke down and shot the guy, yes he needed to see a therapist so he could get his shit straight, and no, he would have just gotten fucked by the university and whatever bullshit regulation they'd bring to the table so there's no way for him to fight this.
This is why schools like mine, with a strong psychology division, gave free mental health counseling for all students, and regular mandatory visits for grad students. You get over worked, are underpaid, and you have to deal with being the professor's bitch till you're done. Their lives honestly suck for 4-6 years, and it's tough to deal with shit like what he went through. Could've all been prevented, or the professor could have just not been an enormous, lazy, cunt.

Depends what field you're in I guess. If you see research based fields, they write in different formats made to be short and to the point. The only lengthy shit is describing their scientific process so that it can be replicated. If you're in a business or economic field, you'll be writing depending on how extensive your work was. No clue on how shitty writing is on other fields, so I can't really say much about them.
It's not like anyone ever reads these publications in depth anyway, you're mostly skimming and looking for the meat since people just piggyback off each other's work and notes.When was the last time you saw something that didn't have influence or was directly based off another person's work?
