Hello /g/. I recently go my hands on a prehistoric computer. We're talking 600MHz CPU clock and 128MB RAM.

It runs XP surprisingly well (slow, I mean ok, it's 600 fucking megahertz), but XP aren't good enough for a haxxor like me (although I'll probably dual boot for software compatability issues).

Here's what I want: I want the laptop to run Debian or Ubuntu (or arch, don't sperg out) without any GUI.

Is removing the display manager and then running autoremove enough to do it?

And what if I want to swich from this CLI mode to a normal GUI? Can I run the DE on demand? Will it take up ram if I'm not using it, ie does it need to be loaded at the kernel at all times or something?

I demand answers. Don't make me actually google this.

On every distro you have 7 consoles. 1-6 and 8.
7 is usually X, the Desktop.

Install whatever distro you want, hit CTRL+ALT+F1 and enjoy your CLI life. Want a GUI? Hit CTRL+ALT+F7 and back are you.

>without GUI
Just use Xorg you fucking autist

Openbox and i3 are crazy light. I'd use them + startx. Spend all your time in the CLI if you want. I hear you can do a lot in emacs. Also definitely use tmux.

I don't want to have all that crap loaded permanently on my 128 MB of RAM.

i3 looks great. tmux seems very impractical, but I guess at times there's no alternative.

Openbox looks promising, but stipping it even from a taskbar is taking it a bit too far. I mean, pretty much everyone is going to want a way to see which windows are currently open.
