My mom continuously calls me because she gets a fuck ton of viruses, so I'm going to install her a GNU/Linux OS.

What distro is good for technologically illiterate people?

Also general friendly GNU/Linux thread.

I'm thinking Linux Mint Cinnamon

How about you install an antivirus and antimalware software ya autistic dingus instead of an OS she'll hate.

Put Win10 on her laptop, install a USB monitor and enable SmartScreen, don't drag her to your "muh privacy" meme suffering.

this guy gets it
>>

As much as I personally like GNU/Linux, this.
>>
>>54871923
xubuntu or ubuntu
>>
I actually switched my mom's computer to Ubuntu. Haven't had any major problem yet.
>>
>>54871923
I installed linux for my mum and ended up removing it and installing winblows... I just installed some addblockers and stuff to make sure she doesn't click any virus downloader ads
>>
>>54872474
this is exactly what Windows 10 is made for.
technologically illiterate moms.

Macbook is nice for technologically illiterate moms. Mine have air since 2010 and it still works.

Arch Linux + i3

I've installed ubanto on a retardo's laptop after he kept downloading shit from cnet

he hasn't had any complaints, it's been 2 years

macs work okay too, but that requires a new computer or a techie to keep hackintosh running smoothly

Elementary OS ...
>>
>>54871923
Install xubuntu and mod it to look like windows. I did this with my parents and they stopped calling until the hard drive died.
>>
Install ubuntu Unity as vanilla as possible

Or you can install elementary and tell it's a Mac
>>
Cloudready is technically Linux (just a fork of Chromium OS) and my fifty year old father loves it. He's completely forgotten about the Windows operating system dual booted on his computer
>>
if you want a *nix environment for your mom, go with OS X.

Either Lubuntu or Mint Cinnamon, riced to look like win xp.

Uninstall non-needed software, make updates be once a month or so, add .doc as a default in LibreOficce, and set up ufw.

Done.

Chrome OS.
>>
>>54873988
That looks like shit.
>>
>>54872474
As much as I love Linux, basically this.

Its easier to just install a decent AV and educate your mom to not click random shit.
>>
>>54874314
This.

I did this to my mom with xubuntu 14.04 lts

Honestly if you consider libreoffice to be an acceptable office substitute you probably should kill yourself.
>>
>>54871923
>mfw I literally made my mom use Ubuntu for 3 years and she had no problems cause all she used was Firefox and Evince

Tell your mom to stop clicking on gay porn ads.

You'd like to think that.

honestly why do you need an "office substitute" anyway?

i work for a large company and LaTeX, R, gnuplot, and thunderbird do everything I need.

That looks like *Windows.

lol thunderbird. i agree with you, but don't even pretend R or LaTeX are acceptable for non-autistics.
>>

THERE ARE NO TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS FOR LAME BRAINED IDIOCY
>>
>>54878001

like, yeah, for me R beats the shit out of ever dealing with excel and ilk, cool. but a significant portion of the US economy is unironically fueled by excel + it's macros
>>
>>54878001
LaTeX is beyond acceptable for "non-autistics"
I taught my normalfag gf to use it and she loves it.
It's a bit of a learning curve for your first 2 or 3 documents but after that it's much nicer than using word

>>54878028
that's fucking sad m8.
I had a job a few years ago where I had to write some VBA to work with Word Excel and holy shit what disgusting software. (there isn't even native tabbing between fields in word forms, you have to write ass-ugly scripts 2 pages long to get it to behave properly)
>>
>>54871923

Adblock is all you need
>>
>>54878140
adblock will not save you from justinbieber.mp3.exe
>>
>>54877682
latex is fine for corporate drones who lack any quality expectations, but when you really need a document production system you can rely on, ms office is irreplaceable
>>
get her ubuntu
>>
>>54878620
I don't know a single corporate drone who uses latex
>>
>>54878670
he's memeing.
It's the exact opposite.
>>
>>54878107
In what text editor/IDE does your gf edits LaTeX?
>>
>>54871923
>tfw you will never install a linux distro on your mom's computer because she died of breast cancer 2 years ago
>>
>>54878833
I'm sorry for you loss. You should have installed Gentoo before it was too late.
