Cloudready is technically Linux (just a fork of Chromium OS) and my fifty year old father loves it. He's completely forgotten about the Windows operating system dual booted on his computer
if you want a *nix environment for your mom, go with OS X.

Uninstall non-needed software, make updates be once a month or so, add .doc as a default in LibreOficce, and set up ufw.
