I heard that APU's can slave low end amd graphics cards in addition the the gpu cores already in the chip, but I'm struggling to find any proper information on it, where should I be looking?

It's called dual graphics and it's barely worth it. The only hardware that supports it still can't hit 1080p 60fps combined.

AMD's site. They have pages upon pages of documentation, it's called Radeon™ Dual Graphics. Heads up, it only works with R7 cards.
