What Chromebook should I get, /g/?
>>
>>54837168
Get a MacBook pro
>>
Asus zenbook. Particularly I have the 303L
>>
None, Chrome OS is a piece of shit. Literally more useless than Android.
>>
>>54837188
i just want to shitpost with a physical keyboard and a big display. no vidya.
>>
>>54837176
OP didn't say he was a homosexual.
>>
>>54837187
they look pricey, i'm looking for something on the cheaper end.
>>
>>54837200
Then get an android tablet + bluetooth keyboard.

The Chuwi Hi8 is a good budget option. Features 2GB of RAM, 1080p display, and 32GB internal + microsd slot for like $100 on amazon.
>>
Acer CB3 or C720
C720 if you want to upgrade internal parts, CB3 if you want maximum battery life.

I have a CB3 and it's a good shitposting machine
>2.6ghz dual core celeron
>2gb of ram
>16gb SSD

Gets the job done, new they're 170$, and they will last forever, had mine for 3 years now, it won't die.
>>
>>54837277
Forgot it has an x86 processor and can run windows natively. The battery is pretty good too, 4 Ah should give you enough to shitpost for at least 8 hours on wifi.
>>
>>54837299
>almost twice as much as the chuwi hi8
>half the internal storage space
>768p screen
>shitty chrome OS
>dual-core processor
This is why nobody takes chromebooks seriously.
>>
>>54837299
cb3 looks nice, some refurbished ones for £105 on ebay.
>>
Posting from a chromebook while at work right now. Ask me anything.
>>
thinkpad 11e chromebook edition
>>
>>54837334
What the fuck are you doing on a chromebook that you need more than that? It's literally for people writing papers in college and normies who want a facebook machine.
>>
>>54837388
They're literally more expensive than a $100 Windows tablet with better specs, think about that.
>>
I've had the Acer C7 for nearly 4 years now, does everything I need as a side machine and I also have ElementaryOS installed for when I need to do shit like FTP or some command line stuff (I have a unix server at home). Also has a 320gb HDD so I can load shit up to watch whenever I want. I've had to replace the power jack once but it only cost like $20.
>>
>>54837388
Chromebooks could have good if google would have put a normal Android OS on them. But no, they wanted to be special snowflakes and decided to make a gimped version of android and hope users would eat that shit up.

A lot of chromebook users are desperately trying to sell their chromebooks on ebay ever since they found out how bad the OS is.

Is there any software/OS that will increase the screen resolution or add more cores on the CPU?

But thinkpads run a full desktop OS. Chromebooks just run a gimped version of android. They are nothing alike.

>cheap knockoff chinkshit
Vs
>well known name brand chinkshit

It's like picking between a Samsung tablet for 200$ and a "DragonTouch QUADCORE 7" 32GB ANDROID TABLET" on ebay.

Acer makes good Chromebooks, they're reliable and sturdy of anything, well worth the extra cost over the specs.
And that is the lowest options anyway, you can get a cb3 with the internals of a c720, 4gb of ram, 32gb SSD, i3, etc
>>
>>54839491
Install crouton, play with Linux when you don't have wifi.
There are still offline things anyway, you can keep "offline files" in google drive for use when offline. I keep a 16gb ad card with some music around and use my Chromebook as an MP3 player when offline, or you can watch movies on it, whatever
>>
>>54839570
I've owned a Hi8 for about 3 months, literally nothing wrong with it except camera is pretty pow res but can't complain since the tablet pc only cost $100.

I think you have to be brain damaged to buy a chromebook.

I have the Asus C300, it's pretty decent, except the screen is crap. But it runs very smooth and battery lasts forever.

As soon as they add Google Play app compatibility, it's going to be much better.
>>
I definitely understand that those tablets are a much better deal for the specs but I want something with at least an 11" screen plus a keyboard/touchpad.
>>
>>54840154
An 8" screen is pretty big for a tablet. Also see pic related. There are cheap ~$10 bluetooth mice on amazon too btw.
>>
>op wants a chromebook
>people suggesting tablets and macbooks

I guess that's what you get for not posting this in /spg/.
>>
>>54840499
Even chromebook users are telling OP to avoid them. They're THAT bad. We're just trying to save OP time and money mr. google shill.
>>
>>54840286

That looks like quite a good deal for a tablet but using a keyboard/touchpad or keyboard + mouse set is just too much of a hassle. But it indeed sounds like everyone here is in agreements that chromebooks are shit.

I still want a cheap $100 laptop with at least 11" screen so I'm off to eBay to find used chinkpads.

I had to live in another city for +6 months and I couldn't bring my rig. And I didn't have much money to spend for a laptop so I got this $200 chromebook...

Shit just works. I really liked the +8 hours battery life, and it has really nice apps to replace common windows tools.

And I was able to run Lubuntu on crouton and deal with the shortcomings of ChromeOs almost in every scenerio
>>

This, I found a cheap used chromebook and put linux on it and it's actually been fairly good.

There's remix OS (free) which is android built for 32 and 64 bit pcs. It was neat to try, but it revealed that the UI experience of using android apps in a desktop/laptop environment is just lackluster.

Asus flip with 4gb of ram. Fucking god sent chromebook, plus can be flipped to be a tablet. Expandable storage and pretty good keyboard too. Roughly 270 bucks new.

Never been disappointed with C720, have had one for a few years. I upgraded with more storage and used it as my main computer until I got some thinkpads. Battery life kicks ass. Thankfully, I usually stay near power outlets so thinkpad's shit tier 6 cell is good enough. C720 runs arch Linux like a charm, even runs the BSDs which is cool if you're into that (I ran FreeBSD for a while). Trackpad is subpar if you need a good one. Crouton works great as well, you can easily run most applications side by side, though in general chromeos sucks shit (albeit decently efficient). If you deactivate the hardware screws you can directly boot into Linux. The touchscreen version has a good touchscreen but nothing too much to comment on, sorta just ok and works. I had both touchscreen and normal version (got one for free) and the touchscreen does add some weight, not noticeable.

Also doesn't get hipster cred MacBooks and thinkpads give. But C720 won't disappoint. Never tried any other chromebooks. Kicks thinkpads butt for battery and weighty but thinkpads keyboard, trackpoint, and hipster cred just too good

Toshiba Chromebook 2
>Celeron 3215U dual core 1.3ghz
>4gb ddr3
>16gb internal ssd (it's an m.2 2242 42mm ssd. A 120gb replacement can be had for $35)
>13.3" 1080p screen
>close to 13 hours battery life with screen at 50%
>audio is "tuned by skullcandy". Very loud and clear for speakers in a laptop

ChromeOS isn't the greatest of youre a "power user" but for general stuff like web browsing, notes, online books, etc, there is no better laptop than a decent Chromebook in the same price bracket. I got mine for $280 brand new. Spent an extra $25 for a 128gb MicroSD. There isn't another laptop in that range that comes even close to the build quality or battery life.

And if you MUST have Linux, crouton works and there are guides for flashing an aftermarket BIOS and installing Linux on the metal.
>>
>>54837168
I have an Acer C720 with Linux installed on it (using Crouton) for university. It does everything I want it to, web browsing, document writing, programming etc. All that for a very cheap system.

In fact, I think I'll get a bigger CB next time.

I'm really interested in this Toshiba Chromebook 2 (2015 edition) but I can't find out if you can install Linux on it. Obviously the original model can install Linux straight to metal as >>54847922 mentioned but there's no such info online for the 2015 model.

It looks like a brilliant laptop in every other regard.
>>
>>54837168
Any

Probably better to go x86 if you want to install a full distro.
>>
>>54848054
Honestly I bought it even without the guarantee of Linux. ChromeOS while limited is more than capable enough for standard usage while on the go. From the reading I was doing in the past, crouton works decent but battery life tanks of course. Down to maybe 6 hours on a charge compared to 12-14 on chromeOS.

Take your needs into consideration is all. I bought it knowing it's limitations and even then I'd rate this laptop 9/10 for what it gives you at its price point.

I have a thinkpad T420 with i7-2620m if I need to do hypervisor work on the go which is very rare. After using the much better 1080p IPS screen on the CB2, looking at a 1600x900 matte screen hurts my eyes.

It's no completely up to date but there are a few on there that should suit your needs.

I don't have some sort of unfair aversion to ChromeOS, but I do need file management and torrent clients which I doubt are possible on COS (although with the Play Store coming, I could use Flud for torrents, but I'd prefer a proper desktop client).

I also wouldn't mind being able to do more advanced filesystem stuff like ADB'ing my phone if ever needed, so COS is a nuisance to me.

Battery life is also no concern, the thing will always be plugged in.
