What is the best modern mp3 player? The zune seems outdated and the ipod has a bunch of unnecessary shit. I just want something with a huge battery that can play music.
>>
A phone.
>>
>>54834972
Yeah, let me just waste my whole battery playing music.
>>
I'm looking at a sanza clip+ with a 32gb micro sdhc card, what do you guys think?

Ruizu x02.

Music playback barely uses any battery. A modern smartphone has a god tier DAC/AMP, and playback battery life should exceed 30 hours easy.
>>
4th gen iPod classic with rockbox, cf and battery mods.

They still make MP3 players? People still buy these?

Ruizu X02 flashed to the latest AGPTek A02 firmware.

High quality DAC, Plays FLAC, Extreme battery life, Easily capable of driving cans up to and over 150ohms without needing an amp, Expandable memory by microSD, Cheap as chips.
>>
>>54837226
Way better to have a dedicated device for something than having a half-working thing on your huge note phone.
>>
>>54837266
Yeah, like its better to have a dedicated carriage than having a half-working combustion thing.
>>
>>54837305
Your analogy doesn't work, you're comparing two things which serve the same purpose.

The DAC in your mobile phone is nowhere near as high quality as the DAC in a good dedicated MP3 player, thus making it inferior at reproducing music. It may just be that you simply aren't aware because you don't really listen to music, which is fine, but there are real advantages to a dedicated device in this case.

Improved battery life, improved sound quality, improved format capability just for a start. If I want to listen to music, why would I use an inferior sounding device?
>>
>>54834969
wish my original zune didn't get stolen. that thing was the best
>>
>>54834969
>>54835064

I've had two.

Lost the first one because it was so small (maybe because I didn't use the clip itself) - volume control on the second one broke after about two months.

Excellent sound quality (see nwavguy) but abysmal battery life (3-4 hours average with 192k mp3).

I'd recommend 160GB iPod classic or Fiio X3.
>>
>>54835499

This, Sansa Clip+ and Fiio X1 / X3 gen 2 / X5 are all good answers. The Ruizu is your best bet for extreme battery life, though.

>>54835483

This is a great answer, if it is within your budget.

The sound is best you will ever get to on a portable device.
Plays flac
storage up to 128GB
samsung phones have Wolfson DAC
Enjoy your $300 mp3 players form apple or zune or whatever.
>>
>>54837524
Long battery life (~72 hours), support for bluetooth headphones, and Opus audio I guess. My Sansa clip had support for none of those things and died in like 8 hours

This. Stop pretending you need a dedicated mp3 player in 2016.

You dont
>>
>>54834969
Cowon x9 is good...Kinda. Godtier battery life, 50 playback hours, dedicated volume and seek buttons. Not $500. Only downside is it's unintuitive UI. Easy enough to train yourself on though.

iPod Classic with SSD
>>
>>54837532

>The sound is best you will ever get to on a portable device.
Doubtful, because every device is different. To be honest, the best sounding DAP of all time was and will forever more be the Rio Karma.

>Plays flac
Playback is a function of the media player more than anything else so, while there can be hardware support for a given audio file format it still requires a media player to actually load and execute playback.

>Storage up to 128GB
My G4 can handle 2TB microSD cards even though they don't exist. Why can't your device?

>samsung phones have Wolfson DAC
They used to, years ago, and I still own a Samsung Galaxy S (Captivate) for that reason along with VoodooSound which provides some incredibly awesome audio. The last Galaxy S device that had an actual Wolfson DAC in it was the S3, everything since has used Qualcomm DACs that come as part of the Snapdragon SoC - if you have an international Galaxy device using an Exynos SoC it'll have a lower quality DAC (not Wolfson) but it's not bad overall.

>Enjoy your $300 mp3 players form apple or zune or whatever.
Actually I have an LG G Flex 2 smartphone that I got on craigslist for $25 (some damage to the Gorilla Glass but the P-OLED display is perfect and the digitizer is not affected by the damage at all). Slapped a 200GB microSD card in it for $50 on sale from Fry's, loaded it up with music (Opus, bitches, there is no substitute) and videos of all sorts and I'm doing just fucking fine, thanks.

A smartphone with microSD slot in airplane mode.
>>
Where did this idea that smartphones contain high quality DACs come from?

It may have been true in some phones a couple generations ago, it sure as fuck isn't true anymore.

Enjoy your phone driving some big 150+ohm cans too.

Everyone saying phones are fine just listens to apple music with their iphone buds.

You're pretty autistic aren't cha? What is your music inside 128-bit 384Khz sample rate FLAC files?
>>
>>54840611
I didn't mention audio formats.
It doesn't matter what format your music is in when your device can't properly drive your headphones, there isn't a headphone amp available that doesn't add SOME noise.

Some will say it is A&K. Some will say it is Sony. Some will say it is Fiio. I'm partial to Cowon myself.
Sony NWZX2 - 60 hours of mp3
A&K380 - Reported less than Sony
Fiio X7 - 9 hours of mp3
Cowon Plenue D - 100 hours of mp3

I see a child that can't wrap it's mind around plugging devices in overnight. No, it won't fry your battery. There are also accessories like juice packs, battery cases, and wireless charge pads for phones that support it.

One more thing. Can I please get your mother's number so I can call to ask why she didn't abort you? I'm curious.

Rockbox'd iPod 5.5 with aftermarket battery and 256GB SSD/dual microSD. Works great for me.
>>
>>54848079
Mah nigga. Does Rockbox kill the battery on that model like it does on 7th gen?
>>
>>54848133
As far as I have seen, no. Granted I literally picked this iPod up for 5 bucks (broken HDD) a week ago, so I guess I wouldn't know. I'll find out though soon enough, the Rockbox crew doesn't claim anything like that though
>>

Can I mod a 1TB ssd into an iPod? I suppose I would need rockbox to make it work, right?.
>>
>>54848596
Yes, and iirc over 256GB the stock firmware has issues with drive size, so probably
>>
>>54848596
It will be extremely slow. Even 500GB is pushing it.
>>
>>54848612
Well, time to go back to wait for SD cards to get bigger.
>>
>>54848609
Wait I think it's 512GB, but still probably
>>
>>54848612
What the fuck do you need speed for in an audio player?
>>
>>54848628
Why? SSDs are faster than SDs, why would it matter if you waited till they got bigger? Just slap a 256gb SSD in it and call it a day.
>>
>>54848649
Some people don't like to wait 10 whole seconds just for the directories to load.
>>
>>54848673
>10 whole seconds
>extremely slow
>>
>>54848650
To use it with my phone, browing 160gb with the scrolling thing is already a pain, cant Imagine it getting slower.
>>
>>54848709
10 whole seconds is a lot longer wait then youre making it out to be when you want to just pull your iPod out, browse to a directory and pick music out, maybe leave the folder to go back if you don't want a certain artist after all, etc. Every single time you would have to wait that long. It isn't a whole minute but it is still quite an annoyance for a portable audio player.
>>
>>54848720
Keep in mind you're using an HDD right now and looking into upgrading to solid state
>>
>>54848709
Count 10 seconds to yourself right now. Do you really want to wait that out just to browse? Its easier to just go with a 500GB. No reason to have an entire terabyte on your iPod besides e-peen bragging rights.
>>
>>54848768
A small price to pay for the ability to carry such a large amount of music on your person
>>
>>54848897
I agree if you absolutely need 1TB of music portable, its manageable. But I don't see why someone has that much music on them at all times to be quite frank. Yeah, FLAC and all, but still.
>>
>>54837532
>>54840120
>Wolfson DAC
This stupid idea will never just roll over and die. It wasn't the only thing with nice electronics, the other Galaxy phones have all sorts of different audio depending on region, generally good even after Wolfson folded up.

>>54837380
>The DAC in your mobile phone is nowhere near as high quality as the DAC in a good dedicated MP3 player
The only thing you can be sure of is that the DAP has a DAC and can play music. The quality of signal is all over the place, some smartphones have outputs that exceed quite a few dedicated players in quality. Buying a DAP guarantees nothing.

>>54841324
High impedance doesn't relate to "hard to drive". What it actually means is that it makes for an easier load, holding sensitivity equal
>>
>>54848569
