I don't think gaming itself is a meme, though. It's a hobby, some will like it while others will find it to be a waste of time, just like any other hobby.
You see this phenomenon with other hobbies as well. For example, with firearm enthusiast, there's normal people/products, and then you have the "TACTICAL OPERATORS". There's plenty of people who smoke marijuana quitly in their homes, and then there's the "420 BLAZE IT!!" shit.

No console gaming is. However PC gaming itself is still a pretty big meme especially those who buy pre-built computers. As video games become more bloated and un-optimized hardware requirements start to sky rocket until you need 4GHz DDR4 RAM and the latest meme video card available (ie fall out 4). PC gaming is basically a scam that encourages game companies to make more bloated and unoptimized games so that gamers will be baited into buying the latest video cards and processors to play the newest AAA with a shit story and game play.
It still pales in comparison to the console meme though. You end up paying out of the ass for games and the console itself is very limited in what it can do. You also have to deal with gay shit like DRM, low resolution, and frame rates. Even the latest Piss 4 struggles to play most game titles above 900p and 30FPS. So basically you end up paying more long term and especially since you have to buy a separate desktop/laptop to do non-console things.
I still have my sandy bridge desktop I built years ago and I only play a few handful of games like BF4 and GTA IV with my HD 6850. I'm not really a pc gamer though, I don't play the latest abortions game studios shit out and I'm not going to upgrade my pc just to play them.

I used to play games too fucking much. Gaming is one of the most expensive hobbies anyone could take up, even if you Jew out by purchasing used and/or taking advantages of Steam sales. However, money is the last thing I cared about. I cared more about the time I wasted playing video games during my childhood and - a portion of - my adult life. All that time wasted gaming could have been used to learn, improve my health, or socialize with friends.
The only games I play now are JRPG's, on my PS Vita. I will occasionally boot up MGSV and SFV on my PC, but I only have 30 hours logged into both, which is not that much.

You want a computer, and you want games as an extra on the side. Why not? Many of the most popular games are coming out on PC. It isn't a decade and a half ago where most shit on PC had almost nothing to do with the releases on consoles, and having both was a huge advantage to an enthusiast or there really was a big incentive in owning a nintendo, sega or sony console.
However this brought some very elitist and fanatic group of people who feel like they have to show off and spend a fuckton of money so they can play at a better framerate on a higher resolution than the majority of people. All while claiming "oh yeah? well, your game was ported to PC and I can play it at 4k 120fps if I want because mustard race!" when in reality that is almost impossible to do with many current releases even after spending thousands of dollars. Specially because right now many releases are also framerate locked.
I play games on PC because I do enjoy playing at a native resolution without blurry stuff and because I still enjoy older games which will always run on this platform, while PS4 doesn't offer backwards compatibility there. On PC there's more flexibility when it comes to things like resolutions, modding and tweaking. And up until Denuvo happened... it was an easier platform for piracy.
For me consoles lost two important incentives: abundance of exclusive games and optimized releases. Many games on consoles now have slowdowns and to be fair, these platforms are just practically miniPCs now. When they came out they already had outdated hardware and they also have pretty lazy devs who just want to shove games every year into them.
Also subscription fees. I get it, the services can be good and free games and whatever. But I still don't find a justification to someone telling me to pay for something that should be free on the premise that "it has extras that you might wanna pay for".

Unless you buy the absolute highest end (980 ti, titan x) AMD is fine. And their older cards actually get better with time, hell my 770 is now being outperformed by a 270x in some games, while it was made to compete with the 280x.
I primarily exist for the Dark Souls series.
I also fell for the meme about Bloodborne. You know, buy a whole new fucking console just to play a game because SONY and their bullshit exclusive.
In all honesty, the game is better than dark souls 3. The only downside is the PVP.

Honestly, I'm okay with it. I think it'll be a boon to smaller devs since big devs already have so much DRM and bullshit to ensure that you pay to play.
The only downside(for me) is that all of my money will be going to school for.a couple of years so I'll miss out on quality titles like Battlefield of Duty 1: world at modern warfare advanced black ops siege.

A few games are framerate locked because otherwise physics are severely fucked. Others just because. For instance, while Dark Souls can be played at 60 FPS it requires a fix and affects online gameplay. Many console ports are locked at 30. Some FPS are locked at 90. There are workarounds out there but overall it's sometimes not really ideal.
