IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

What OS do you use in your Thinkpads?

I wanted to try Linux/Arch, but it looks like my T400 is somehow incompatible with grub and I couldn´t change systems. Got stuck in Arch.

Right now I´m running Windows/Linux Mint, the first one for a couple work related programs that I need and the second one for university stuff and programming.
>>
Why is X220 the recommended model here? I'm interested in getting one.
>>

Muh keyboard
>>
Why is the ThinkPad keyboard so god-tier, /g/? Why were ones like it abandoned in favour of chicshit?
>>
>>54815606
Because they use rubber dome switches, the other laptops use scissors one which makes them less comfortable to type on.
>>
>>54815284
Any X220 owners please respond.
>>
>>54815938
Because it's a nice and portable decently specced little thing. And yeah, the keyboard.
>>
>>54815938
I have an x220
Its a good laptop overall and pretty cheap all things considered. Its probably the best bang for your buck laptop out there. Its recommended a lot because impoverished neets can't afford hp elite books or dell latitudes or the latest thinkpad models so they get the next best thing
>>
>>54815181
I just use OpenBSD. Works great.
>>
>>54815895
The chiclet keyboard and the scissor switches use the same mechanism,

The problem with the new keyboards is not the way it feels, but that abortion of a layout.
>>
>>54815938

I love mine, I have an i7 X220 in near perfect condition, when the IPS panel arrives it'll be a perfect little machine for shitposting, although I do wish it had slightly more sane aspect ratio like 16:10 or 3:2.

I need a new computer because I am about to graduate from Uni and the macbook days need to be put behind me.
I want to get a neo thinkpad. Before someone says T420 or X220 my answer is already no.
I need an opinion on these two models.
I am either going to buy a maxed out T460s, a maxed out P50 or a semi top spec P70.
Which would you guys choose? Is the P series worth the extra dosh for the quadro card or should I just get the T460s. I will play WoW and Overwatch on this machine but besides that it will be strictly for office, graphic design, the basic programming.
>>
>>54817671
A friend´s got a T40. I´ve got a T400. We´re both quite happy with our choice. Another one´s got an Xsomething. He likes his keyboard less than ours but likes the extra portability.

Read OP.

The only thing you'd have to watch out for are -i suffix models, which are underspecced but otherwise identical models for the education market. I don't see the suffix on that one and there's an i5 sticker on it, so you're good.
>>
>>54818203
I am leaning more towards the P50 because it has a 4k option and for less money I can get more or less the same specs but I need to know if the extra cost over the T460s is worth it or not.

will a w530 with a i7-3610qm be much faster than my w520 with i7-2720qm?

I found a good deal, seemingly, on craigslist for a w530 with:
i7-3610qm
k2000m
1920x1080 FHD screen
120GB ssd

all for $380. It's a good $70 cheaper than similar builds of the w530 go for on eBay but I don't know if the i7-3610qm is very good. It's hard to justify buying a new laptop unless it's comparable to the i7-3720qm. The SSD and quadro k2 are pretty enticing though.

because of gaming, you'll probably want to go with something with a nvidia GPU inside

T450s has a 1gb nvidia something or another inside it and does ok on previous gen AAA titles on medium graphics

It werks just fine.
Prerequisites:
- an external SPI flasher (Bus Pirate, RasPi GPIO, Arduino, dedicated SPI flasher, etc)
- a second PC to flash from
- RTFM, read the wiki, get on IRC
- at least half a day to dedicate for the process (plus more time to build the toolchain beforehand, depending on second PC)
- good soldering skills (I opted for this one) or a "SOIC-8 test clip" (eBay)

tl;dr for everything:
Build the toolchain. [takes at least an hour]

Strip the thing down to the motherboard (you have to take it out of the bottom and take off the rollcage), locate the IC "U49" next to the northbridge, right on the edge of the board, which is a 8MB Winbond SPI flash IC.

Solder / put the test clip on according to the pinout and connect it up to the flasher.

Use flashrom to read the ROM off twice (it should recognize it as a Winbond device), diff the files to ensure that the transfer wasn't shit. [using a Bus Pirate with <v6.2 firmware, each read took ~11 minutes]

Find a T430 BIOS image, get the newer vBIOS out of it.
Configure coreboot using nconfig / menuconfig [5-10 minutes], build it [didn't take that long].
Concat the first 5MB of the ROM you read off of the chip with the coreboot image, use ifditool to unlock the "flash lock" in the full image, flash it [2 reads + 1 write + 1 verification read = ~45 mins].

https://bitbucket.org/iruatpku/coreboot-builds/src/a78936a64e365b47aabde013c77849af56f841fd/t420/build.sh?fileviewer=file-view-default

and finally, some closing thoughts:
The hardware clock won't be set, and it will cause a LOT weird of problems. What you have to do after flashing is manually set the time (date -s) to not have the clock set to 2136 March, get time from NTP (ntpdate) and force a hardware clock sync (hwclock --systohc --localtime).

Another thing to note is the amount of VRAM available. It is set by coreboot, so you will have to set it for yourself if you ever want more than 32MB of VRAM alloc'd.
Use nvramtool (the one that is in the git repo, not some stuff that you pull off a package manager!) to set gfx_uma_size. The maximum amount you can set at the moment is 224M, I am still trying to find out why it is capped at this amount.

The only thing that's somewhat useful is the Power Manager to set battery thresholds, Airbag thing might be useful too
Driver wise only the touchpad drivers are worth it, studio drivers can be useful though
Everything else is somewhat useless, get video drivers from Intel/Nvidia

It has the nvidia 940mx w/ 2g. I paid about 2k. It's my first non-work laptop ever so I figured why not. I'm thinking Ubuntu/win7 dual boot. I'm a UNIX system admin full-time so I really don't want to think about UNIX administration after work.

Why are you thinking about the 460p? Why not a carbon x1 or xps13?
>>
>>54823811
Yeah I was torn between the AMD 5330 and 940mx but the price difference of about 530€ is ridiculous. the 460p is 1399€ and the 460 with the AMD 869€. yes, the 460 don't have an HDMI port and no led-backlights for the keyboard but it 530€ cheaper.

I'm thinking mint mate and win7.

Tons of times. You need to kill the windows update service, and clear out the update cache. It's a folder inside the Windows directory, google it. Once it's empty, restart the service and try again. If it's really fucking up, try running the exe and msi files it downloads to that folder or else you'll be doing this in circles.

You should also install any service packs on their own, since you can control their download so it won't get corrupted like this, this will save you at least an hour per service pack. Also install .net separately if you need it, takes about 15x longer through windows update.
