IT "specialist" stories

Most first level IT now a days are idiots if you're talking about a large company.

On another note, Rossman needs more recognition. He's a man with his head on straight who has a lot of good practical knowledge.
>>
>>54809565
IT morons are getting more common with each passing day, and often the dumbest ones are the ones with the most certs and an IT degree.
the smartest IT I've ever worked with are always the guys who were from other fields with better work ethic and enthusiasm to learn.
>>
>>54811434
he's a very smart guy and has a lot of good points, but he gets angry too easily when he's trying to do a task, and there is even the slightest issue. The only exception to that would be his actual bench work.

I checked out this guy's yelp business page. He'll reply to like every poor review btfo'd the reviewer. It's something I have never seen before holy shit.

IT people are like the burger flippers of the tech community. They don't do anything that any other person in the tech department couldn't do, they just exist so people with more valuable skills can focus on their work instead of taking time to set up workstations or servers.

And if they had more than half a brain or gave any fucks, they wouldn't be in IT.
>>
Holy shit this guy is a douchebag, every single video he shows he has utter disregard for his customers, and keeps saying how he's shit at soldering, but doesn't give a fuck.

As a computer repairer is rustles my jimmies to see an unauthorised repairer fucking with a board and not using ESD protection.
I've seen so many customers with devices "repaired" by people like this, only for them to fail a month or two later because they used shit parts, shitty labour or didn't protect the parts from ESD damage.

>>
>>54814673
ask mummy/mommy to buy you your very first Linus cuck tips branded ESD watch
>>
>>54814709

You'll generate a charge just by moving around, while working on stuff like that you should be grounded all the time.

>>54814717

Joke all you like, but the first 10 years of building my own computers and working on bare boards like that, they'd fail in some way usually within a year or two, in ways you could easily attribute to some kind of ESD degradation.

After I learned about ESD and started to use ESD protection whenever I built a machine, I haven't had a single one fail, systems running continuously for the past 4-5 years now.

It makes a huge fucking difference, ESD damage can happen invisibly, so the device you're working on still functions fine, but over time the damaged circuit wears away and eventually fails.
>>
>>54814785
protip, the only "ESD protection" you need is to just screw in the PSU and plug the three-prong IEC cable into the outlet.

BAM. Access to ground.

You're molesting the case every other movement so why the fuck do you think you need a fucking path to ground constantly on your wrist?
>>
>>54814811
>You're molesting the case every other movement so why the fuck do you think you need a fucking path to ground constantly on your wrist?

Because if your body is at a different electrical potential than the case when you touch it, a discharge could be sent through components on it's way through to ground.

Wear an alligator clip style wrist strap attached to the grounded case and you'll always be at the same electrical potential as anything in the case.

Sure, plugging in your case to ground while working on it makes a difference, but just having that wrist strap decreases your chances of damage by a whole lot more, especially if you're picking up components out of boxes, etc.

Look at how much the average person knows about a computer.

50% of people can only...
Turn on a phone or computer
Click an icon to start a program that is preinstalled
Swipe their phone to get to their home screen
Send a text message
Send an email from a laptop or desktop but not their phone
Charge their phone from the charger that came with the phone
Take a picture using their phone

40% can do all of the above and also...
Install an app
Use Microsoft word
Use MIcrosoft Excel
Change the background on their machine
Play a game on their phone
Check their email on their phone
Put a password on their phone
Make a google or apple account
Login to their google or apple account

5% can do all of the above (Whether they choose to or not) and also...
Download a program to a computer
Install a program on a computer
Create an account on any site
Organize their folders
Pirate shit
Play video games on the computer

3% Can do all of the above and also....
Build a computer (With a parts picker)
Install Windows
Diagnose and fix very simple problems related to software
Or
Program small programs

1% Can do all of the above and....
Install any operating system
Build a computer without a parts picker
Diagnose 99% Hardware and Software problems
Program more advanced programs
Install and configure networks

The remaining can usually do all of the above and 1 of the following
Administrate servers
Program extremely complex programs
Install and configure complex networks
Build custom parts

A very small number of people can do all of the above and even less can work for designing processors or motherboards

Now take either the the 50% or the 40% and add one small program they "specialize" in, and you have the common IT "Professional"
>>
>>54815304
Is there a source on this?
>>
>>54815304
Considering how often technophobe family members manage to fuck up their computers by downloading shit into them, I´d move "download/install a program to a computer" to the first or the second groups. The 5% knows how to do it "properly and safely".

Otherwise sounds good

He responds to all his yelp reviews, he makes YouTube videos, and he manages to run his own repair shop.

How does he have free time to do anything?
>>
>>54815924
In some video about old vs. new Thinkpads he talked a lot about how he prefers the old ones because of their the sturdiness and their protruding battery, which allows him to edit the videos on the way to work/home, while he´s standing on the bus or walking through the street.

That´s probably a lot of used time. Other than that, he´s probably a time wizard.

I've always preached that IT should have a more robust skill rating system similar to what trade unions are like. Apprentice, Journeyman, Master, etc.

There is to much bullshit going on, and certificate factories out there. No real standards to hold someone against. Even a degree has limited weight now-a-days.

>>
>>54814498

So much this. At my company, IT is a hindrance more often than a help. They manage every single user-issued computer in the company the same way, from the non-tech-literate HR dept all the way up to the highest-level software developers. Which means that they issue a locked BIOS system with disabled USB boot running Windows to developers, loaded with a garbage tier anti-virus that scans every single file change (Cutting I/O performance on the machines down by over 50%, and CPU performance by 25%).

So developers have a machine they can't even be trusted to USB boot from, while writing code that directly handles billions of dollars daily. .

The video that got him internet-famous was pretty legit. Apple authorized repair wanted to charge his customer $750, and all they would do is throw out the broken part, refurbish the system, and send it back. Instead, he spent 10 minutes doing a manual diagnosis of the actual problem, fixed the problem, and saved his customer $750 (minus his fee) and a week of their time.

For Apple's, it makes more sense to do it their way. Pay a monkey $10/hr to turn a screwdriver and replace a $100 part, charge the customer $750. If they used legitimate skilled labor, they'd pay $200+/hr, still charge $750, but take home less money in the end. It's easier to just hire idiots.

It must be working if it's being used. I would rather have it locked up like that than allow a female programmer to fuck it up.
>>
>>54820797

The other big problem with the way apple is doing that is they destroy all your data. So the customer would have had to pay $750 and loses their data while he does it for half the price and you keep everything the same.

>>54814550

>not an authorized repair service center shill

>>
>>54819313
>>54815398
They aren't stats they are my observations over the years. One thing I would like to point out that if you have some of the smaller percentages but not all of them then you are still considered in the previous tier. I am not so good at programming so I am considered in the 3% though I am in the higher of the 3% because I know how to administrate servers so it isn't 100% This is what you know, more of a guideline of what is most likely to be known.
>>
>>54815779
I would agree with this statement yes.

well hes a pretty cool boss he pays for us to go to conventions and trainings.
this is my first real IT job and its great working with them.
im just surprised he didnt sanitize the input since i already made error cases in the front end related to bad frontend input that get sent back during validation.
its really just an angular front end communicating with an express server that handles a rest api and database input/output.
my job was fairly simple though. the hardest part was figuring out how to draw charts and shit with javascript. since i didnt wanna use a shitty bloated js library for that i made it myself and that was about 40% of dev time.
learned a great deal about canvas and how to interact with it though.

the backend guy had some anger issues but he is actually a nice guy.
i just cant help but feel that certs and degrees dont mean jackshit these days.
we have pretty bright kid who has a BS in video game engineering and has done some serious work in datacollecting is basically fucking john carmack when it comes to math.

certs kind of are bullshit. So many people use brain dumps, people will straight up tell you to just use a brain dump. What is scarry is some people actually believe this isn't cheating. I'm a help desk bitch, and one guy that got hired told me he got some cert, forgot which. Basically he says he used some really good brain dump and passed. He just told me this like it wasn't a big deal, fucking delusional.
>>

Some certs are. Training for certs can be as valuable as getting the cert itself, my last interview I talked about all the trainings I did for certs I didn't have because I wanted the knowledge but the piece of paper wasn't that important to me. Told them if they wanted I could get the cert, they said that wasn't necessary.
