Is Windows development all boring app dev?
Seems to me that most of the interesting programming, such as distributed systems, targets Linux and BSD.

It's an operating system, it's essentially front end so basically the same as android, ios, macos, js/html/css, etc.
The "interesting programming" as you call it typically focuses on data over user interaction. Either way, you're making a tool and the tool itself is what makes the programming interesting, not the domain per se.

You can do distributed system programming in Windows just fine the same way you can do drag-n-drop-baby's-first-program in Linux & BSD.
Your bait was delicious.

It's short for application program
The term was used in the 90s at least, maybe 80s

depends what you find interesting. personally i love working in directx on windows. distributed systems might be fun to you but not everyone likes the same things. windows is just fine for development of all kinds of things though, why would you think it isnt?

No, but Windows owns the desktop in businesses so there's a higher proportion of development for that stuff.

The NT kernel is not as good as various *nix kernels so that makes it a worse choice for a lot of demanding applications.
Does Windows still not support anything better than NTFS natively?
