i said 'and even' because windows explorer gives you the full functionality no matter where you view it. whether it be normal folder viewing, saving or opening a file you can still rename, move, delete and do anything you need in that window. in osx, if you have a save/open dialogue you are lucky to be able to make a new folder if that.

i cant remember if you get any functionality like that on linux because i havent tried to do anything like that, mostly because i normally just handle shit via command line beforehand or whatever.

1) It's an irish publication
2) generally the news will try to avoid naming victims, but suspects/belligerents don't get the same courtesy.

i agree that if someone's mentally ill (as this guy probably is) it's more than a little unfair (like naming a child in a criminal investigation, which we all agree not to do), but something tells me you were just looking for a reason to be outraged at Americans, and your interest in this topic ended back when i pointed out it was an Irish news outfit.

not him, but that argument is kind of horse shit and you must know it. os x drops support for stuff that's not relevant to 90% of users, and we're well past the point that most OS X users use (let alone burn) discs. How many products does apple sell that can read a disc? it's just the old school MBP, isn't it? all the rest require a peripheral.

would that it were the case that os x just supported all sorts of legacy shit from scsi drives to powerPC CPUs, but apple clearly decided to keep a tight window on the tech they support, and support for burning images from the GUI is way way outside what we would normally consider that window.

Naah, journalists being dicks is a pet peeve of mine, but where I'm from it's usually limited to stealing dead people's pictures off Facebook and tweaking the facts to blame immigrants for everything.
We actually have a code of conduct for journalists (that everyone shits on, but that's beside the point) stating that you should weigh public interest with the human right to privacy before publishing identifying information about a criminal. It's beyond me how knowing the name, face, age and previous occupation of someone who habitually shits into a bucket would be in the interest of the public.

>>
>>54798593

That looks like a retarded version of what OS X can do. In OS X rename x items... leads you to a dialog that lets you either search and replace every filename, add text before or after the filename or format a completely new filename like "(name of choice)" + index, counter or date.
>>
>>54798560
>it fucking sucks
>I need to google it

no you don't. I've got a simple standalone exe file which you can copy into your folder and it pops up the list of your files/folders in a text file where you do your changes and once you save it and hit enter you've got your files renamed as you wish. job done.

>>
>>54798956

>>
>>54794475

Daily Reminder:
>os x doesnt support window snapping
>>
>>54798986
So, like den4b.com/?x=products&product=renamer but integrated to the OS. Interesting.
>>
>>54799025
>magically guess the date of a string
honestly I have no idea what you're trying to mean. if you mean you'd like to name the photo #1 as let's say 1-15-2000, photo #2 as 3-19-2000, photo #3 as 9-5-2000 and so on then absolutely no script/program/file explorer will do it faster than your typing speed anyway since you've got to type them in for every single file anyway. and since you KNOW which file is taken on which particular date already, then that means you DO have the list of that photo-date matching stored somewhere in your pc which makes my text based method more convenient.
>>
>>54799094
So, I just want to make sure that I understand how your method works. I have the feeling I'm misunderstanding.

You execute a file in a folder. The executable will extract all filenames and write it into a txt-File like
>filename1.ext
>filename2.ext
>filename3.ext
>etc.
And you are now free to edit those filenames with the methods provided by a text editor. After you are done with that the executable is able to reassign those edited filenames back to the original files.

The problem I see is that your file editor just has those strings, nothing else is provided.

Please explain again how it works, I must be mistaken.
>>
>>54799142
that is exactly how it works since that was the very first thing that I'd compiled years ago with my limited knowledge.

>nothing else
what exactly would you like to have in that file? now I have the feeling you're trying to imply the modification date of the files which by the way may not be the date that the photo is taken anyway. but still you can certainly add this feature to the program, albeit I never ever needed that since in most cases the photos happen to be in a quite a convenient order such as dsc1251-1290 are from 1-1-2000 and 1291-1332 are from 1-2-2000 and so on so just by clicking "replace" instead of "relpace all" until the point where the date changes has always done the trick for me.
>>
>>54799220
More simple than that, you have a bunch of photos from a vacation, maybe from multiple cameras, shot by different people. You want to put them together and rename them like

photo_$date_$index.jpg

with index sorting them chronologically as well.
>>
>>54799262
just for sorting you can use openoffice or some spreadsheet editor but as I said I've never had my pictures in such a chaotic order before. what you'd like to have seems very specific and you'd definitely have to look up google for some scripts in any case. I just want to go back to your first argument >>54798560 which triggered me, there is simply no faster way of solving that kind of a problem.
