I've used iTube Studio before. It costs money, but it downloads from pretty much every website and can then be converted.
Not sure if it's hated here, but I've been using jdownloader for a few months.
It's not pretty, but it can observe your clipboard, so if you just copy the link to a page with a video it will put it in your download queue.
