Thinking about getting one of these but I'm still unsure

>Only 50$ for comfy portable shitposting
>Slightly more powerful than the Pi Zero
>Almost vanilla ARM Debian (1GHz R8 ARM processor)
>SoC can easily be removed
>5 hours of claimed battery life
>USB Type A port to attach storage/peripherals
>Wifi and Bluetooth integrated
>4gb of internal storage
>512 MB ram

However, what bugs me are the following

>Keyboard looks difficult to use
>No (micro)SD card slot
>usage of RGB over mini/micro HDMI
>Display is only 480*272

Help me /g/

I'm actually working on building my own comfy shitposting device. It's going to be a similar size to the old HP Jornadas.

Currently working on the display and inputs; no solid design yet though.

It's gonna be powered by a Raspberry Pi 3, It'll be quite thick but it'll still be small enough to fit in a pocket -- I'm leaving the ethernet and usb jacks on the board because they're fucking useful. I'm making my own membrane keyboard with tact switches, I've got a 7.4" 1280x370 display, mouse control will be a blackberry bold trackball module, and power comes from a 6400mah battery.

It's probably gonna look like shit when it's completed, but damn it's gonna be comfy.

>keyboard looks like shit
>completely exposed PCB on top
>lanyard loop in PCB
>overall questionable durability
>about the size of a 7" tablet (4.3" screen diagonally comes to about 3.75" horizontally meaning the pocket chip would be at least 4" horizontally including the bezel, 7" tablets are about 4.5" horizontally), so not really pocketable

>>54790541
>Waiting 3 minutes for the image to render is not a comfy experience.
Wut. The processor is comparable to the old low end/low power Z series Intel Atom processors, and those don't have a problem loading images. Hell, a couple months ago I was shitposting on a 2001 Celeron laptop and didn't have a significant problem with image load time (did however have a significant problem with any browser designed for use with scripts being unbearably slow due to high RAM usage).

>>54790959

Not saying that you should get a tablet, I just don't like devices that are so small that you can only use the keyboard with your thumbs but still large enough that you can't carry them on your person and instead need a separate bag. At that point I'd rather just go slightly larger and carry an older 7"-9" screen netbook (personally use an Asus EEE 900A) that's only slightly larger and offers a full keyboard that I can type normally on.

>No longer the case
The GPIO part on the top of the device is still completely exposed.

I have a Jornada 720. The deviice itself is great. I got netbsd on it but the wifi card only supports WEP so I can't really use it outside of my house. I had planned to use it as an emergency ssh machine for college, but there's no WEP there

I used an Asus EEE for the better part of my college years (it was this one: >>54790817 ) and now I'm using a Thinkpad x201 (pic related) for most of my serious on-the-go / work / uni computing needs. Haven't really looked into it but making it run on 18650s would be cool if the device would be big enough to fit them otherwise, bonus points if it uses two and can run with just one so you can swap them without turning off the device.

>>54792028
>First of all research on the pi zero its not really suitable for shitposting
How so? Is there a problem with scripts bogging down the ARM11 processor? I know 512 MB of RAM is more than enough for shitposting.
>>
>>54792028
Not making it for shitposting, just light use (terminal/etc) for 5-6 hours screentime.

Not sure if I'll use the 5" screen, some E-Ink 4.3" from aliexpress could be really cool alternative.. Probably try to order one soon, hit or miss. Atleast have fun trying to get it work.

Rii Mini i6 is the smallest usable KB for me. Also had it before I got RPI Zero

I'm not sure as I don't have one as of yet but I would imagine that you would be limited to text only terminal browser
This is from speculation as it was made for diy projects that needed embedded devices
>>
>>54792295
Look up the specs, the Pi Zero has the same processor as the original Raspberry Pi except clocked at 1 GHz instead of 700 MHz and has 512 MB of RAM instead of 256 MB. Just because something is designed for embedded devices doesn't necessarily mean it has particularly low end specs now days.

most umpc turds are in that goldilocks zone of retarded wherein they call all phones botnet/tracking devices, secretly though it's just because it's new technology that they can't accept. UMPC is something they can understand in a portable package.

Just get a fucking X series thinkpad, it's 4 more inches and a proper machine. Most losers who use its WWAN capability are also in that perfect retard zone where they say "all phones are tracking devices" as they're putting the sim card in their laptop.

What would you do with it that you can't do with your phone that wouldn't be so inconvenient that just waiting until using your laptop/computer wouldn't be preferable

I used to ride the umpc train but then after sinking a few thousand dollars in several different umpcs I came to the realization that I had a better time doing most of the things I did on them by using my phone, and so I just invested in a larger phone that was easier to work with (note 3 at the time but I enjoyed it so much I got the note 5)

Swype/copy is perfect as long as you take the 10 minutes to learn how it needs to have the precise letters for certain words, and just not to use it for short words like it or an. Not acceptable if you need to do a lot of terminal stuff.
Alternatively they make foldable BT keyboards, bringing this up because it can fit under the smartphone in your same pocket and if you have your lap or any table then is more portable and usable than a mini keyboard where you have to mentally adjust for no space between keys.

Are you seriously asking for examples of how Android has less features than a full desktop OS? Are you retarded?

>What is root?
>run as root all the time, it's totally a secure way to use a device
No.

>you just choose the shitty resource hog apps
>instead you should be choosing shitty apps that lack features that you've come to expect over the past decade
I'd like a browser with add on support that doesn't use as much RAM as my OS + browser + email client on my netbook, such a thing does not exist for Android.

>Then carry a phone with the SIM card removed

>foldable BT keyboards
I don't feel like bending my head all the way down and squinting to see a 4"-5" screen on my lap.

>you can run full linux distro on it
Running the OS you want to use in a VM over a resource hog OS isn't an acceptable way to use a device.

>Do 5 minutes research and get a rootable model
>run as root all the time, it's totally a secure way to use a device

I don't think the Pandora and Dragonbox Pyra were designed for the unemployed.

Pick one and only one, cell phones are over 30 years old and 2G service is 25 years old. All of my smartphone specific complaints deal with lack of features, not scary new ones.

I pre-ordered one last year.

>Keyboard looks difficult to use
The new one has fixed many issues with that. The keyboard uses tactile metal dome switches which you may of used on machinery, usually behind a printed overlay.

You can use a USB device.

There is a snap-on board you can buy to get HDMI or VGA.

I agree. I was able to reach A on SOS The (Tiger Took My Family (this version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zG_Ivo9ZgCA ). It's really not as comfortable as an actual keyboard but MUCH better than a touchscreen. The main problem really is that the keys aren't clicky and they kind of "lag" in that they don't reset to their default position immediately. They travel for just long enough to make jackstreams on higher difficulties impractical.

>>54800102
There was a thread a while back where some anon posted a link to an Indian company that supposedly still made them. They were $60+shipping though. Don't know if you'd consider that worth it as you'd need to track down a microSDIO card for wifi and those are generally more expensive (think they're $40+). In the end you're going to be in at least $100 for something with specs comparable to a $35 Zipit Z2. If you are willing to spend more but also want better hardware you could look at the Sharp Zaurus series as you can supposedly run Linux on those. There's also the Nokia N810 that you can get for ~$50 with even better specs, but has the downside of not being able to use a newer Linux kernel and therefore possibly having compatibility problems with newer programs (the Linux kernel is kept on a separate partition that's only ~2 MB and newer versions of the kernel have grown past that).

Goddamn it, that's not a botnet. It's a root vulnerability. It's bad and could be used to create a botnet but isn't itself a goddamn botnet. None of these devices should be unfiltered to the internet anyway, because of shit like this.

I've used AllWinner in the past and it worked but wasn't anything special aside from their willingness to allow boot from SD instead of forcing boot from NAND like RockChip. I'm not surprised they have backdoors but any low cost Chinese hardware should be suspect

Small laptops and handheld devices with integrated keyboards have none of the problems I listed. My old netbook is even small enough for me to type with my thumbs while standing if I wanted and can easily be set on one leg and used while squatting (try that with your smartphone and foldable bluetooth keyboard).

>plus you have to carry another piece of crap around
Same with your suggestion of carrying a portable keyboard, you also aren't considering that due to the device being able to do everything a smartphone can do besides calling you can instead use a smaller dumb phone.

No. I looked at the Nexus 7 before settling on an old Asus EEE because I couldn't find a satisfactory keyboard case that could be comfortably/easily used on surfaces other than flat tables. All the cases are either the balancing act variety or the folding fabric variety with a kick stand, and all of them only support having the tablet at a single angle or sometimes two different angles.
