Libreoffice is frequently updated and it has a real wiki. Search for wps office. It's a particular office suite. It is free but the creators have contracts with microsoft. I don't know why but wps works better with proprietary formats than libreoffice. Openoffice is a piece of shit.

Please avoid using the term “google” as a verb, meaning to search for something on the internet. “Google” is just the name of one particular search engine among others. We suggest to use the term “search the web” or (in some contexts) just “search”. Try to use a search engine that respects your privacy; DuckDuckGo claims not to track its users, although we cannot confirm.

my uni granted me gratis "premium" Office 365 (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/One Note/Sway/Video/Delve/Tasks/Calendar/Newsfeed/Mail/Yammer/Sites/People/10TB One Drive)
I notified the Academic Senate how that was infringing EU privacy policies and safe harbour provisions in a private university
They offered an opt-out to anyone
No one has ever started using those tools, except for the custom email addresses @university's domain (and tbqh 99% of my peers do not use them on a regular basis). Those mails now are stored on uni servers rather than being transferred on US of A servers.

Office 2016: Full freatured software, available for desktop PC and OSX, badass but expensive as fuck

Office 365: Monthly paid service, you pay and can use office on Android (any screen size), Windows Mobile, iOS, Windows.

Office Online: You must have a MS account to log in, can only save your work on OneDrive. Almost the same shit as 365 but free and limited (like Google Docs)
>>
>>54785972
2016 is the normal upgrade from the previous versions of office.

It's actually the opposite. Different versions of Word implemented different .docx standards (for a long period a "transitional" docx implementations was used in different MS Office versions)
LO has always been able to open them all and to re-save them all in a way that could please all, while different version of the Microsoft suite actually ruined documents

Does not make sense. LO doesn't have "formatting" per se. LO can save in .doc and .docx, in a way that has always been superior to Microsoft's tool too.
LO supports ODF standards too, widely adopted at governmental and academic level. Maybe you meant that Microsoft's tools are sometimes shitty at implementing a well documented format in older Microsoft Office suites?

>>
>>54786420
Refute it.
What's wrong with it?
Microsoft word is the de factor document standard since everyone uses their software that automatically saves in their document format.
Introducing a different standard does break their vendor lock since no one has to deal with proprietary ooxml fuckery.

1. Office is expensive because most office users are probably pirates. The only people who pay for it are boomers and businesses. Individual users (students) such as yourself should be pirating.

2. You don't even need Microsoft Office to save as .docx. It's a rather open format (pretty much just some .xml files in a .zip with a different file extension), and even Libre Office can save as it. Since 100% free/libre software is capable of saving as .docx, you have no legitimate complaint that your university will not accept .odt papers.

3. Alternatively, put your .odt file on a flash drive, go to one of the computers in the library, open the .odt file in Microsoft Word (yes, it'll open them), and re-save it as .docx.

There. I've given you three alternatives, all of which don't involve paying a dime. Now stop complaining. The .docx file format is pretty fucking standard. So's .pdf if they allow that.

The only possible issue I can guess of is a GNU/Linux user without Cambria and Calibri, so that a document saved with Cambria and Calibri on a MS platform (that will not obviously embed those fonts in the doc) will "look different" due to font replacement. That's even the issue referenced by the other anon who posted that interview to Italo Vignoli.
I happen to have both on my GNU/Linux and I didn't obtain them in an unauthorized way.
And even if I didn't had them,
>https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/15041/calibri-and-cambria-fonts-in-libreoffice/
>Carlito and Caladea fonts (both now provided with LO) are metrically-compatible with Calibri and Cambria respectively. This means that if you use Carlito instead of Calibri, your document will have the same layout as if you used Calibri.

ODF is an international standard, actually older than OOXML, and no legally recognized institution can validly refute to accept a document in such format. At least, in Europe.
This is true for public and private universities, since both have to be legally recognized.

>Stop forcing other people to do things you want and change the university to the one that is using only free software.
How idiotic of you.
You're the one pushing for a old, proprietary standard.
Why one should obtain an unauthorized copy of a proprietary software or be forced to pay for it?
You can use LibreOffice without forcing "the university" to change and without shoving formats down everyone's throats.
>>
I used open formats exclusively at uni.
This was before docx and shit was actually an open standard.

I sent the shit in opendocument, and when someone complained I pointed to a piece of university policy that said the university could not require me to purchase anything not explicitly stated within the statement of requirements at the start of the semester. As no teacher was going to list 'computer' and the associated specs as a requrement, they had to make an exception for me.

IIRC there was only one person that complained in the end anyway, most didn't even mention that anything was different.

Sounds right.
Most ISO specs cost a fee to get a copy of. It's like an expensive cookbook. The actual standard itself is free, but the description of it isn't.

OP, if you want cheap access to Microsoft software, start a business and join BizSpark. That's what I did. Full MSDN access. Cost me $150 to register a business with the state.

$150 for full access to the entire MSDN download library? No dealing with potentially malicious keygens or license-bypassing software?

Yeah. My time's worth at least that.

>Are you realistically speaking to OP? Have you any clue what you're talking about? No, you haven't.

veraPDF promotes itself as "the standard open tool" for the validation
and it's pretty strict (at least in my test).. I wouldn't be surprised to see complaints in veraPDF for PDFs validated in preflight
For example, this is an hypotetical PDF/A-1a from LO
>https://0x0.st/bVO.html

acroread opens it in PDF/A mode without complaints

>Sounds right
I beg to differ. The cookbook shall be open to everyone for a standard to be really open. You can't get nor the gist of it nor the "detailed cookbook" from ISO itself. You've a summary of the rules from veraPDF, but I'd rather see them published from ISO itself.
