Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I fancy that a lot of us here consider ourselves experts at assessing specs and condition from blurry ebay photos.

Anyone want to take a stab at what resolution this is? It's certainly flexview, but I'm not confident to say more than that. OS appears to be Vi$ta if you're trying to judge based on the taskbar.

Oftentimes used palmrests cost just slightly more or the same as a trackpad.
Unless the trackpad is physically broken, it has a removable sticker IIRC.

Not so sure on Ivy bridge machines and onward, i forget.

Question: I just got my X220, installing debian and I it prompted me that there's some proprietary software on my that debian can't install. What could be causing this? How do I fix it? Is it even worth fixing?
>>
>>54778190
I would assume it's the wireless drivers. Pretty important, I'd say. Search the filename it gives you and you'll find the package you need.
>>
>>54778253
I apologize, this is my first time ever using Linux and debian never mentioned any file name in the graphical install.

Also, does anyone here use Libreboot?
>>
>>54778337
Ah, I never use graphical install when I have the option not to. You'll have to find out just what wireless card you've got and then try to find the corresponding wireless driver.

As for libreboot, it won't work on any Thinkpads after the X200 or T400. Blame Intel for putting botnets in their later processors.
>>
>>54776567
Anyone try the Latitude 5470 yet?
comparing that to a T460/T460s. Like the thinkpads, but the screen on the latitude seems brighter than the T460.
>>
So, what was the last truly great no-compromises Thinkpad?

T60 with 4:3 IPS or something IBM?
>>
>>54778380
If Libreboot doesn't work, is it the same for coreboot? And is coreboot even free?
>>
>>54778524
Coreboot includes proprietary blobs for hardware compatibility. Libreboot is a fully free Coreboot distribution, that simplifies instillation and strips out the blobs, the cost of that is that you can count the devices it supports on your hands.
>>
>>54778577
So there's no possible way to liberate my BIOS?
>>
>>54778617
Not on an X220.
Intel processors made after 2008 are irreparably compromised, there's nothing you can do about backdoors built into the CPU.
If you want a fully Free machine your option are another CPU architecture or 10 year old hardware.
>>

T601F is GOAT.
>strong Penryn CPU
>8GB RAM
>SATA II
>Advanced Dock
>1600x1200 IPS
>steel backplate keyboard
>3-5 hours of battery life
IBM's Thinkpads were great, but they're too old at this point to be good for much more than shitposting, sadly. T601F hits the best balance of specs and quality.

All right guys, question.
I got the option to get a X240 with a 1080p IPS display, but I think 12'' are a little small for me since I'm gonna use it on a daily basis.

The other option would be to go for a T4** with a 1600x900 TN display, but all the reviews I read suggest I'll get eye cancer when I go for this, and IPS T4** are too expensive.

Is there a T4** with an IPS panel that I'm not aware of, is the TN panel not that bad actually, or should I get the X240?

can someone give me some run downs of less apparent pros/cons of w520 vs w530 in the long run?

specifically i wamted to know if there is significant battery life difference(and which is better) and if, in your guys' opinions, the upgrade from 2nd gen quad core i series to 3rd gen core i series is worth the big price jump. i asked in the last thread and got a little butthurt about someone telling me to get an x series but i have good reason to get a powerful 15.4" laptop. this is really just a question of if 3rd gen is worth it.

It's probably worse than what you expect it to be (it was for me). So if this is truly bothering but you don't want to pick up a screwdriver; get the X240
But if you want a better PC (assuming you're not looking for the most battery life, but purely how comfy your machine is) get the modded T420s.
The **40 series is probably the most hated one in /tpg/

Hey /tpg/, first time poster here so go easy on me! I just purchased a genty used ThinkPad (X140 I think) from my college's surplus sale for $120.

What are some upgrade options I can look into to get the most out of this little thing? It has an AMD A4-5000 processor, which is probably a little crappier than what you guys are used to. It's also running Windows 7.

Thanks in advance! I'm in love with it so far, it feels really sturdy.

Question: I'm installing my network drivers on my machine and it prompted me the option to choose one of the network interfaces during the installation. One is:

eth0: Intel Corporation 82579LM Gigabit Netowrk Connection

and the other

wlan0: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6205 [Taylor Peak] (wireless)

What I'm trying to accomplish is get my wireless drivers working, I/m guessing I go for the second one, but still I'll like someone else insight on this as this is my first time.

well, are you plugging it in to a wired network, or are you using wireless? This is just for 'where to get packages during initial installation'.
>>
>>54783300

>>
>>54783300
eth are rj45 ethernet ports.
wlan are wireless adaptors.
That's an old standard though, the new ones are a lot more cryptic, hence why some distros stuck with the way things were.

So yes, pick the second.

The Intel drivers will reject connections to wireless access points with broken beacon or authentication. A ton of older access points that implemented draft standards will have this problem.

No, you need a PSU even for low-end cards. ExpressCard doesn't even provide enough power for some USB 3.0 cards, there's no way it could power a desktop GPU.

Cool, there's just one last thing on my mind then. How tall is the cooler? I can't find any good side shots of the card that would show how tall the cooler stands. The cooler on my 240 just barely fit in the dock, so it's the real limiting factor moreso than the power draw or card length.

It's a very common issue on the X220. Nothing to be concerned about. I'd only bother fixing it if you're insecure about using broken-looking stuff. I see damage like that as battle scars, personally. It's nice knowing my laptop has been through hell and lived to tell the tale, it wasn't just some pussy that sat in a clean, safe office all its life. Feels good to give it a comfortable life now, knowing it suffered in the past.

THINKPAD 13 IS THE NEW X220
>>
>>54792094
No, the 13 is good but it's lacking in the build quality compared to a X220 and since it has the newer keyboard you might as well get an X230
>>
I will suck rancid dick for the T430/T420 non -s IPS mod kit to be available.

I am moving to Ireland next year and wanting to take my ThinkPad with me. At the moment it has the Alienware screen but I would really prefer a glossy (wait for it) FHD IPS screen to continue with my graphic design. Current setup just isnt good enough and I need to use an external monitor.

Anyone here bought kits from RMSMajestic? I have faith they will release a kit for T430 and T420 models, I'm curious in the meantime how the overall experience was.

need to replace my X200. two options on CL, both $140

T410
> i7 620
> NVIDIA 256MB
> possibly 8GB RAM
> 1440x900 display
> 250 GB HDD

X220
> i5 2540
> 120 GB SSD
but
> 4 GB RAM
> shitty 1366x768 display

Are either of them worth the 140$?
I like the smaller size and SSD and the newer i5 benchmarks a good 50% better than the older i7, but.... DVD drive? nicer display? more RAM? Either way guess they would both be a step up from the X200.

Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast runs well on my T400 with a Mobility Radeon HD 3470

I was playing the original Tomb Raider but keyboard rollover means you can't run, jump, and turn at the same time so I shelved it.

Other than that I have Baldur's Gate installed, some DOS era platformers like Duke Nukem and BioMenace, and also Half Life 2 for shits because I wanted to see how well it would run (surprisingly well, 40-60fps in most areas on high at 1280x800).

$140 isn't too bad for either. But the graphics card or "i7" in the T410 isn't worth talking about
And afaik the NVS 3100m is slow enough that the HD3000 is actually competitive with it

Also, better battery life in the X220. If you're really lucky, it might be an IPS panel. And besides, you can always buy a stick of RAM yourself. It's literally 2 screws to open a door and stick it in

Things are changing now with Lenovo, but for the most part /g/ loves dankpads because:

> Solid build quality
> Excellent keyboards
> All components are FRUs so anything can be repaired easily
> excellent compatibility with loonix/open sores operating systems
> They have "business features" that make life easier for traveling professionals (everything from the thinklight to hardware radio switches to dual screens to liquid ducting in the keyboard to prevent damage from spills to tons of external ports) as opposed to the shitbox consumer focus 99% of laptop manufacturers have now
> They will literally last forever if you're not a retard
> Corporations buy a shit ton of them to assign to their employees and then resell them a couple years later when they upgrade so they are low cost and widely available
> IBM was god tier in the business world and the Thinkpad pioneered what a high quality business portable should be

Also because they look cool and with their focus on production instead of consumption and their rugged/dinosaur aesthetic they're sort of the "anti-macbook" (or at least they were because Lenovo shit all over everything).

>the NVS 3100m is slow enough that the HD3000 is actually competitive with it
this is very good to know...
i still have major reservations about downgrading to a smaller (height) screen. i sorta fell in love with the 8:5 ratio. with luck i'll go see both of them tomorrow or monday to look at physical condition and battery capacity. upon closer reading, the X220 post mentioned a "thin curved bright spot on the side of the screen, only noticeable on bright backgrounds"...

Anyone here with a T520 upgraded it to the B156HW01 (1080p/TN) display? Can you comment on the quality? I've heard that the colors are actually quite good for a TN panel.
>>
>>54795828
I got the B1 because I wasn't paying attention when I bought it. Is it worth selling off and ordering the T1, or is the difference not that noticeable? It's certainly miles better than the TN in any case.
>>
>>54796086
Not that guy but I think in terms of visual quality there's not a huge difference (although the T series looks very slightly better due to using AH-IPS instead of E-IPS) but the ghosting will be less on the newer models if that bothers you.

If you already have a B1, probably not worth it, but for someone still yet to buy the panel it's well worth it to track a T1 down.
>>
Hello fellow freedomers.

I have a chance to buy used 3yo T420 for $240. With 12mo warranty.
Is it worth it?
When i see $120 deals on ebay i doubt it..
However considering shpping and complete lack of warranty...
I'm, confused.
Also, apart from keyboard, they are in almost mint condition.
>>
>>54796138
If having a mint thinkpad is important to you, there is nothing wrong with spending a little extra for a good condition machine.
>>
>>54796135
My panel only really ghosts noticeably if I leave it on a white image for long periods of time, so it doesn't bother me too much. If the T1 doesn't ghost at all though, I'm pretty interested.
>>
>>54796223
T1 ghosts. I think the T1/T2 are actually older than the B series, so they might ghost more. The B3 I believe is the least ghosting one.

>>
>>54791329

First try supergluing it. You should line the inner part of the plastic on both sides then scrape outwards so that there's only a very tiny amount of glue on the outside portion of the cracked "wall". This way you don't get any unsightly oozing of glue. Also pin a set of heavy duty encyclopedias next to it and on top of it to lock it in for a good 24 hours.

Should be fine. Less is more.

>>
What SATA version does the Thinkpad X201t have?
>>
>>54795800
Can't wait for my X200 to start working again (if it ever does)... I'm reduced to either using a netbook or moving my home server box to a desk-like location and using that for not server things. I think I'm leaning towards the T410 just for the large 8:5 screen and DVD drive. Haven't had a computer with an optical drive in almost 4 years...
>>
>>54799361
The Source games listed all run beautifully, as does DMC4. Not much of a surprise there. Legend of Grimrock 2 chokes like a bitch at the forest, but it's fine when you get indoors. Skyrim probably wouldn't handle ten million mods too well, but I haven't bothered much with it so I can't say for sure. The Serious Sam games run really well, 3 is particularly impressive with how good it looks while maintaining a smooth framerate.

Among games not listed that I've tried, Metal Gear Rising is completely unplayable no matter how low you reduce settings or resolution. Shadow Warrior 2013 runs nicely right up until you kill something, at which point the dismemberment system cuts the framerate into pieces. Core 2 Duo is also not very good at handling recording. Using dxtory, even recording at 25% resolution can't maintain a stable 75 FPS in a game as undemanding as Doom.

Your P9500 is a little better than my T9300, so you might get slightly better results than I do, but I'm thinking a lot of the problems are due to the games in question utilizing multithreading and expecting to have more than two threads to work with.

I am in the market for a modern laptop. Money isn't really an issue, but I'd like to not drain my checking account where I don't need to (<$800 would be nice).

Ideally a workstation/business class laptop. I'm not sure where to start looking though. I already have an x220 but it's simply isn't powerful enough for my needs. I love my x220 for being so easy to take apart and upgrade RAM, HDD, etc. and all the BIOS settings. So I'm strongly considering getting a more recent thinkpad, but I know there is some controversy among /g/entoomen about the most recent batch of thinkpads, and I've also heard good things about chromebook and hp elitebooks.

The laptop NEEDS to still be available for purchase as new by the vendor (no third party refurbished or hand-me-down from ebay). It NEEDS to have at least 1080p res. I NEED to be able to watch twitch streams and youtube videos and netflix without scalding hot air being blown across my balls. And I would LIKE for it to have the old school keyboard, not chiclet, but that's something I'm willing to compromise on.

What do, /tpg/?

The x220 is not powerful enough because x220's intel hd3000 iGPU cannot decode hd video without simultaneously blasting my crotch with scalding hot air. It also doesn't help that its resolution isn't so great.

I'm not knocking the x220 I'm just in need of something more powerful
>>

Palmrests are cheap and easy to replace. Don't let that bother you.

$300 seems a bit steep. What are the specs?
>>
>>54800910
You might not need to ditch your X220.

The heat issue is not typical. I watch HD video all day long with no heat problem. You might be able to fix it. Some tips:
>Check that your BIOS is properly configured. In the config -> power menu, you should have "CPU Power Management" and "Intel Speedstep Technology" turned on. Tweak the other settings if you wish.
>Clean your fans and consider applying new thermal paste to your CPU.
>Check what version of the BIOS you are using. Some old versions have trouble with overheating. Consider upgrading to a newer version, but be warned that if you fuck up you'll have a brick.

What do you mean by "not powerful enough?" What problems do you have, and what specs do you have?

It is POSSIBLE to upgrade the display to 1080p, but it's a huge hassle.
>>
>>54801812
>without simultaneously blasting my crotch with scalding hot air
That's really not typical. The CPU is certainly powerful enough to decode video and I've never had that problem. It sounds like something else.

You should really troubleshoot the heat issue before replacing the machine.
>>

Again, I really respect the x220 and I understand why /g/entoomen adore it. It's a really, really sweet laptop. And I never had issues if I used VLC to play HD video, but when I put on netflix over chrome, when I run a GBA emulator, I get insane amounts of heat. And even if it was somehow magically resolved, honestly the resolution still bothers me.

Get a specced out T530, and spend the rest of your pounds on weed.

Sorry, I don't use windows on mine.

How big are T series thinkpads? Can I take one into class with me for college? Or would it be a pizza box sized monstrosity?

Okay that's pretty cool. Do you have any idea how well Dark Souls runs? I'm not looking to play AAA games but it'd be nice to play everything else.

Look into the X series for portability.

I tried Dark Souls and it wasn't pretty, but I didn't use dsfix or anything so I don't know how it might run with those things. Worth a try, it wasn't totally unplayable, just far from comfortable.

So my current laptop looks to be kicking the bucket soon, and I'm interested in a x220 as replacement. I have a couple of questions if anyone has a moment:

Is getting a cheaper model then adding an msata drive for the OS, alongside whatever hdd is in there the best way to go about it? I might be interested in upgrading the screen to the IPS one, and upgrading to 8 or 16gb ram too. Are these reasonable upgrades worth doing for a beginner? Anything else I should be looking to do?

Also, is it at all worth looking for a newer model with a newer gen (or i7) processor? Or will the difference be marginal, compared to the shit keyboard? My current laptop has a 2nd gen i5, but I'm hoping increased ram and and an ssd will be a significant improvement in performance?

Having to wait for your thinkpad to arrive in the mail is suffering

Anyone have any experience upgrading their wireless card? I tried earlier but I'm fitting a half size card into a full size slot without an adapter.

Power management. Then select the brightness you want it to have when plugged in.

Unless it's totally fucked up that is, does it work to manually adjust it back up when you've plugged it in?

The 61 generation really was great. Possibly the one time Lenovo made objective improvements to the line that wasn't just undoing their previous faggotry. I felt kind of bad about cannibalizing the T61 I got for my Frankenpad because it was so impressively well-built and solid-feeling.

this is too much

For college you may enjoy the portability of the X220 more. also, the IPS screen is miles ahead of the TN on the T420, even if it is impaired in the resolution department.

I'd do it.
