those kinds of desktops are actually the lightest because they're generally running window managers that don't use OpenGL or DirectX like Unity/Windows DWM and compositing does and draw the background as a layer behind everything else.

Can I see a screenfetch or get the info about your desktop? I'm particularly interested in your panel. It looks very nice with everything matching, plus I like how it is pulling music info and such. I have conky going right now which forces me not to cover a bit of my screen (although with my current layout it's not much space anyway so I think it'd be nice if I could have similar info in my panel.

I don't really believe in desktop icons anymore (didn't even use them on Windows back in the day), but at least you should get any actual files off of there and leave just the shortcuts. Put all that 3DPD stuff in a pictures folder or something. After that I'm sure you'll find that you don't use all those shortcuts very often and you can do without some of them. Having those icons everywhere obstructs the wallpaper, and having to hide all windows + double click them is a waste of time.

Ah, okay. I might be able to explain then. I pretty much only used to use them in desperation trying to get a windows-only video game to run. Probably also why I hate wine.

Aside from what I just mentioned, I've never really felt a need to use a VM for anything. I don't do much that I consider too dangerous to test on my own system, and things like distro-hopping are pretty foolish. I guess if I threw up some VMs I might like to try out BSD or something.

I mean I guess dealing with sorting virtual hard drives can be kind of annoying, but on the flip side it's portable, which means if space ever somehow became an issue for me I could just move it onto a bigger drive and extend the size with a single qemu command. I also distro hop occasionally.

There was nothing wrong with anime posters or the circlejerking regulars. The only thing wrong was your expectations. 4chan is built around otaku culture and having a general thread about a somewhat niche subject is bound to cause circlejerks. You're all a bunch of fucking cretins who call cancer the first chance you get but are seemingly incapable of looking in the mirror.
>>
>>54782588
Ah I never had any issues at all setting up a VM. I was just always disappointed with performance or lack of things to do with them.

>I also distro hop occasionally
wew lad

They are basically all the same except for a few rare cases like Arch having the AUR. Aside from that it's what shit they throw at you out of the box, freshness of packages, and the package manager. Distro hopping is a meme.

Hardware problem then, but fair enough I guess. With some blood magic fuckery I use the linux kernel and a (dangerous) patch to pass my GPU to the VM so my performance is top tier. Might end up falling for the 16 GB ram meme though.

>They are basically all the same except for a few rare cases like Arch having the AUR.
Well, no, not entirely. I don't think I'll move from gentoo in a long time, but I can tell you that just the package manager entirely changes everything unless it's literally comparing RPM to dkpg. The ability to change system profiles, the multilib handling and the entire portage tree makes life easier than any other distro I can think of. Its release cycles also matter a lot too. Hell, the AUR isn't really a big deal since you can obtain the source code and compile it yourself on a different distro anyway - most people put their projects on github with a makefile and configure script.

Poor performace in a VM generally means you're either using them in the "wrong" way or you just don't have enough resources physically to dedicate to the VM. Video games aren't gonna run unless the stars aligned on your build and you're okay with losing a saturday.

Yes, GUI editors are better? I use emacs in GUI mode. I never said that TUI editors are inferior, nor that I work with an editor.

There are more usages for terminals than SSH, like running the tools you're creating, the scripts you create to automate your work, accessing serial equipment, sending mail to local users without firing up thunderbird, you name it, it can be done in a terminal faster than from a touchpad.

You are simply ignoring the individual parts that make up the OS, specifically the ones that make up the desktop environment.

On Android, for example, the thing you think of as its look has to do a lot with the launcher.

On Mac OS I think it's called Aqua or something, and some people run X11 on top of it instead to get more of a GNU feel.

I don't know much about Windows since it's very complicated and always trying to be a special snowflake. Also no available source.
>>
>>54784415
why don't you have anything open? the point of these threads is to show off all the customization you've done to various thing, so you should show off a few programs instead of just panel + wallpaper
>>
>You are simply ignoring the individual parts that make up the OS, specifically the ones that make up the desktop environment.
"Desktop environments" are *nix specific concept. Windows and OS X don't have a "desktop environment", they are packaged with a compositing manager which also works as the window manager with all the default applications being things you usually can't truly replace or remove.

>On Android, for example, the thing you think of as its look has to do a lot with the launcher.
No, it has to do with material design. Before material design it was holo. Before that it still had a distinct look. Your homescreen is a small fraction of the entire Android UI, most of which is hardly customizable or changeable.

>On Mac OS I think it's called Aqua or something
Aqua isn't a "DE" like you'd think of on Linux. It's also not changeable. You can't use any native, graphical OS X applications without it.

>and some people run X11 on top of it instead to get more of a GNU feel.
And that's simply X11 running on top of whatever is being used. It doesn't actually replace anything.

>I don't know much about Windows since it's very complicated and always trying to be a special snowflake. Also no available source.
Windows and OS X are similar when it comes to their "DEs" because both are essential for the OS to function as a usable desktop OS. They are far more encompassing than DEs on Linux.
