It serves a purpose in the sense that the internal hardware and airflow were designed for the case, and vice-versa. The airflow, hardware, and case are all part of a singular design concept.
In contrast, the Cryorig is using off the shelf hardware, and in fact it's a less efficient use of space to make the case a cylinder. It's like fitting a square peg in a round hole.

I'm talking about the custom PCBs and layout of the internal components, including the shared central heatsink. The whole design is based around this single-fan cooling concept. Compare that to the knockoffs that just use standard components (each with their own fans) and stuff them into a cylinder.
