It's hard to compare to openbox and friends because CDE is a DE, but I'll try anyways. Aesthetics-wise, it's easily my favorite, even though it's really hard to theme. A huge issue is it's compatability with modern software. Most of the tools included with it are neat, but pretty much useless. Aside from that, with tweaking, it's just as usable as any other DE or WM, but it takes an extremely long time to get there.
