Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

I agree with the first point (viewnior is hot ass trash garbage), but it's all irrelevant anyway.
Why? Because one program that can do both good is better. I think XnViewMP is a stellar image viewer and as a great bonus it has some sick editing features that would take me orders of magnitude longer to perform in GIMP or any other editing suite.

It's pretty much undocumented, but you can use termcaps.

Example:

export LESS_TERMCAP_mb=$(tput bold; tput setaf 1)
export LESS_TERMCAP_md=$(tput bold; tput setaf 3)
export LESS_TERMCAP_me=$(tput sgr0)
export LESS_TERMCAP_so=$(tput smso)
export LESS_TERMCAP_se=$(tput rmso)
export LESS_TERMCAP_us=$(tput smul; tput setaf 7)
export LESS_TERMCAP_ue=$(tput rmul; tput sgr0)
export LESS_TERMCAP_mr=$(tput rev)
export LESS_TERMCAP_mh=$(tput dim)
export LESS_TERMCAP_ZN=$(tput ssubm)
export LESS_TERMCAP_ZV=$(tput rsubm)
export LESS_TERMCAP_ZO=$(tput ssupm)
export LESS_TERMCAP_ZW=$(tput rsupm)

Through it into your ~/.bashrc.

More info:
- man termcap
- man terminfo

Note that his will also affect manpages if your pager is less.

The only reason criminals get caught is because of other vunerables like javascript, flash, etc. That's not tors fault.

>fbi runs exit nodes
Who cares? You are aware that between the exit node and your home are shitloads of proxies? That's the whole point of Tor. The exit sees just a few proxies, behind more few proxies, behind hundrets of proxies, thousands of people are connecting to in changing cycles.

>literally has no content

You're bad at math, man.

>let alone hassle of its speed limits
Speed has improved over the years because Tor is growing.

Just stop falling for memes. Using Tor doesn't get you on a "NSA list of bad people" and the FBI doesn't knock on your door because you are using Tor. The NSA is collecting informations about everyone, not only criminals, you should've know that since Snowden. Tor actually makes it more difficult for the NSA, since they can't connect informations into individual profiles.

You're trying too hard. It's not THAT bad, also Tor isn't made for downloading/torrenting anyway. The point is privacy. If you don't people don't want to go full tinfoil, it's good enough to route .onion services to tor and for other things to stay on the clearnet. This way you can use hidden services like the duckduckgo websearch etc.

tl;dr just use Tor when you need it/makes sense

You're fucked then, catalyst drivers are the worst thing since pulseaudio.
Try the open source ones, you will loose some of the performance but at least you'll have a working system between updates.

There's nothing wrong with any of those if you're not a freetard.

Also, in steam.desktop, replacing:

Exec=/usr/bin/steam

With:

Exec=bash /path/to/script.sh

And commanding:

sudo chmod +x /path/to/script.sh

Worked for me and should work for anyone needing it.

Excuse the untidiness, I'm on my phone.

Well top one is, you can actually decide what processes are happening more or less. Being on win 10 now using virtual box... Windows spoops me cause I cannot control or see what is actually happening in my machine. This is totally fucked by windows. You cannot shutdown unnecessary processes that the proprietary windows kernel deems needed, ie Contra spyware. This goes for all GUN+Linux OS's and distros. Buntu gets shit by a lot of the Gentoo and Arch fags cause it's for new users more or less. Also I would install whatever you choose on a different drive before totally switching over

Have been using mint 13 for the past few years, although not quite exclusively.

I decided a month or so ago that I wanted to try some alternative to firefox, and discovered iceweasel. I didnt really know what I was getting myself into or I would NEVER have actually installed it. It involved backporting packages, something that I was able to accomplish but still do not have a total understanding of. Somewhere in the whole process I updated firefox accidentally. (I think I told the terminal to install iceweasel and it substituted it for firefox for some reason.) I later decided that I did not like iceweasel and uninstalled it and reinstalled firefox only to find that the appearance was stuck on (what I now realize to be) xfce-basic. So you know how you can go into the settings menu and change the look of the desktop with by changing the appearance to things like crux, xfce-winter, aurora, xfce-dawn, xfce-dusk, etc, etc? I had mine set to xfce-dusk, and it had worked fine with firefox before, but ever since my ill-fated alternative browser experiment, firefoxes appearance was stuck on xfce-basic, and not only is it indescribably ugly, but it is also a glaring (literally) contrast to EVERY other program I use. I go from a nice, easy to look at dark theme from any other program to having a search light blasted into my face when I open up firefox. Every other program works fine with xfce-dusk, the only problem is firefox.

What caused the problem and/or how do I fix it?

If all else fails, I will format the partition mint is installed on and reinstall it entirely. (also have xp on the same drive) This is ONLY a last resort, and will be an epic inconvenience if I am forced to do it.

>> tldr: firefox appearance is stuck on xfce-basic, how do I make it follow the same appearance as everything else?

I dont see any options for vortex or arc. Is this because Im using mint 13? is there a way to change that?

Also, Im considering upgrading to 17.x on this laptop. It has 2 GB of RAM and a pentium m 780 CPU clocked at 2.26 GHz (although it acts for some reason as if it were a 745 and clocks itself at 1.7 GHz... Its a long story...)

Do you think that my hardware can handle 17.x without any loss of performance compared to 13? or is there something above 13 that I should switch to? I would just stay on 13 because I like the look of it for the most part, its more rugged looking and just feels sturdy compared to newer stuff which feels a bit more flowery and all. Unfortunately, when I try to use a second monitor plugged into the vga port on my laptop I can only mirror the display rather than extend it as I want to. I know this works on 17...

Alright, I'm thinking about jumping ship to Linux.

Which of Ubuntu, Xubuntu and Mint is the best? I've dealt with Xfce on like Arch linux briefly in a virtual machine and couldn't get shit to work, same on FreeBSD.

Mint I've heard has gaping security holes because the kernel's like two years old and gets very little support, but is easy for people switching.
