What are you guys working on? I'm thinking of getting a Cortex m4 or m7 based board with LCD to create myself a mini PDA with my own os where I can read books, play youtube vids (it can do it due to the hardware fpu), browse muh trans erotic stories, read manga, IRC etc, it should be fun. the whole thing seems to be doable under 100$, I'm so excited!

Sooo, your making a smartphone with no data wifi?
>>54754652
it'll have a wi-fi module, and it'll do less than a smartphone

I've got a Pinguino-Micro with a PIC32MX795F512H instead of PIC32MX440F256H so I can run RetroBSD. Just have to find my USB to serial adapter
>>54754899
that's cool my man, i imagine it's at the same level of a cortex M or pentium 1

>play youtube vids
you're grossly overestimating the power of these chips, it can either decode(low resolution, 320x240) h264 OR display video at 24fps, not both.
if you want a linux play box, which it seems like you do, get a rpi or something that's based on a reasonably spec'd ARM core. the memory constraints alone are going to make it very difficult to do a lot of what you want, and don't even think DMA will save you, the AHB is still not fast enough for seamlessly mapped DRAM even though you can do it very easily.

Doesn't need much power, after I'm done playing around it's just going to be used for an atomic clock I'm making
>>54755050
I see it powerful enough for single tasks (no javascript of course lol) thanks to the fpu it has
>>54755044
anon, there's vids of the Cortex M4 processor playing h264 on 720p on 30fps.

>I see it powerful enough for single tasks (no javascript of course lol) thanks to the fpu it has
I don't think the PIC32MX795F512H has an FPU.
>>54755128
No what you've seen on youtube is a M3 running a frame buffer from a raw video source, no decoding. Like I said its one or the other. If you want h264 you're going to want something with a GPU built in that supports the NEON extensions.
Also >thanks to the fpu it has
Do you even know what an FPU is? it's not just some magic box that makes the processor faster, the problem with your plan is a matter of bandwidth.
Good luck with your project, everything else you mentioned if def possible and pretty fun.
>>54755227
my bad, I was thinking of another pic32 product, still should be enough for most tasks besides JS in a single tasking manner

you obviously don't read the descriptions
>If you want h264 you're going to want something with a GPU built in that supports the NEON extensions.
thats what Cortex M4 has though, thumb instructions and neon

it's pretty self-explanatory anon, h264 playback is confirmed here

3/10 made me look through datasheets
>>54755469
kek, maybe not h264 but defo webm / mp4. m0 to m3+ is too weak but the fpu added in m4 to m7 makes it possible now, plus they clock 200mhz+
>>54755564
>but defo webm / mp4
those are container formats :^) kekin irl right now

*shrug* my purpose has been achieved ;^)
