My fucking video card just died out. After drinking heavily for the last 2 days I am ready for the new relationship.
Have a i5-2550k with 8 gb ram. Looking for something that can last, say 3~5 years.
Had a GTX460 before that.
What's the new hot thing today, that won't break my wallet.

>pic related, mfw the card burned
>>
Wait for the new video cards to come out early next month. Nvidia's should be out on the twenty seventh, in NA at least. Amd's on the first or something

That's what you get when you buy Thermi Grillforce

>2550k
Keep it, just buy a new videocard.

That's exactly what I need, my question is, since you guys are probably smarter than me, what video card can I get which will be supported by my i5.

>>54752719
If it's new, isn't it going to be 10x times more expensive? + I don't think my processor can handle brand new shit, though it us overclocked.

Pls have mercy, I just want to have fun with my vydia.

GPUs don't need to specifically be compatible with certain CPUs. It's true that if a CPU is too slow, the system can't make full use of the GPU- this is what is meant by "bottlenecking"- but I think you'll be okay with your 2550k.

Anyway, now is not a fantastic time to buy a graphics card- wait for the new Nvidia and AMD cards. Even if you can't afford them, their release is likely to affect pricing of current cards.

Any chance of a more specific budget?

but I've been nvidia gaylord my whole life...

I can scrape up 250$ and not die, but that is the absolute maximum.

Okay. Well, first off, note that I'm only going to suggest NV cards here, because I'm not familiar enough with the AMD competition. (Can't use them in my setup.)

There is no NV card exactly in your budget. (Assuming USD)

I see that the 970 is currently going for $280-300. If you keep a careful eye out when the 1070/1080 hit, there's a good chance of grabbing one for $250.

If you need to buy /right now/, your only real choice would be a 4GB 960 for ~$200. I have one of these and I'm very happy with it in current games, but it's not the most futureproof option and it won't be running new titles at high in 5 years.

If none of these options sound quite right, you'd have to either explore AMD offerings or wait for the 1060 (probably several more months at least).

I like your phone. What is it?

>>54753544
So 960 CAN play current games on high and will be able to do it for about 2 or 3 years, right?

It's Nokia C2. It's decent, if you hate touch screens, like I do.

>So 960 CAN play current games on high
Yep. I'm playing Rise of the Tomb Raider- apparently the most demanding title currently- on High, with Very High textures, at 1080p. ~40fps. I usually lock it to 30 (adaptive half vsync) for smooth frame pacing, but that's up to you. This is with a moderate overclock; you'd be silly to buy a 960 and run it at stock frequencies.

If I sacrifice a few settings, it plays fine at 1440p too.

>2 or 3 years
Pretty much, yeah. I fully expect to have to slowly start turning off some extras over the next few years, and for 1440p play to become less and less feasible. I'd say that in 4 years, it will be a "1080p Medium" card. I'm personally okay with that.
>>
>>54754035
Thanks for the help.
Does the stock cooler handle the mad overclocking that you put your 960 through?
>>
>>54752058
If Polaris comes out in June, then go for it. If not, get a 380, it's less than $200 and does a good job on 1080p.
>>
>>54754080
Don't get a 960 it's gonna rip you off
>>54754035
>2 or 3 years
Nvidia will fuck your drivers when the 1060 rolls out. Don't lie to OP faggot.
OP just grab a 380X, it's better than 960 and AMD doesn't ruin your card with updates after 1 year.
>>
>>54754080
It's a moderate OC, not a high one. Haven't increased the voltage, even. 70c and this isn't even the TFZ "Gaming" version, just a 4GD5T.

>>54754147
>driver fucking
This has been disproved by actual testing. It has been found that new drivers actually improve performance across all generations. I'll find it for you when I'm not on mobile (~20 mins). In the meantime, if you have data that contradicts this, please also share.

>>54754507
Here we go! Notice how the 780Ti's performance does not in fact dip but in fact increases (slightly) with each release.

Of course, it's absolutely true that the guys responsible for "optimizing" specific new games for new driver releases will now be focusing on Pascal over Maxwell. This will result in Maxwell still seeming competitive at the start of Pascal's cycle, with the latter seeming much faster for games released in the next few years.

That's what I think people are noticing when they complain about old cards getting "gimped". Happened with Fermi->Kepler, happened Kepler->Maxwell, will keep happening. Happens with AMD too, except they haven't actually changed their architecture in a rather long time now.
