>>

To be honest google does not have much choice. People want to watch youtube for free without ads which is unsustainable. Google has to pay for the servers that run youtube, repairs/upgrades, and electrical bills. Since half the people out there are using ad-blockers they need an alternative form of revenue beside ads.

Not saying I would ever get youtube red but I totally understand why it came into existence. If this doesn't save youtube then nothing will.
>>
I've had red since it came out (play music subscriber for two years)

It's nice, I don't like any of the exclusive content but not having to bother with an ad blocker is nice, kind of like how not having to download and organize music is nice

Sometimes it's just worth it to do something the legit legal way
>>

what is youtube red supposed to be? 1 dollar for 3 months seems like a killer price if it's good enough.

It won't. What will happen is piracy will grow out of control. If it can be viewed or heard then it can be pirated, no exceptions. With things like HEVC and generally more powerful laptop and desktop processors it's only a matter of time before the whole piracy gets out of control. By then the only way content creators (at least the music and video ones) will be able to make coin is if you buy their content online. What will start happening is content creators will start committing suicide en masse and people will start bitching about how there is no new content to watch/ listen to.

>How many sites would implement this? Think of all the ads and retarded videos you see cluttering your facebook page these days and how they could easily implement some monthly fee so that you can get around them
again piracy will get out of control by then so all this won't mean jack shit.

All we need is a tor site where people upload their magnet links to their torrents and paid mods to get the fire starting.

>People want to watch youtube for free without ads which is unsustainable.
that will eventually lead to the death of youtube
this is a good thing
>>
>>54746137
You mean like background multitasking of YouTube( a feature native in android taken away) and replaying streamed content (i.e. downloading videos;streaming is technically downloading)
>>
>>54747019
True but streaming websites are fucking themselves by restricting content to certain countries and blocking VPNs. People will turn to piracy, it's inevitable.

In addition like I said as computers become more powerful people will start using HEVC more and more. You can already fit a better than yify 720p 2 hour movie in a ~1GB file if you use HEVC with the slow preset and a CRF of 22.
>>

YIFY was fucking ass, the guy even said outright it was shit quality

265 needs 900mb to equal a 1300mb file if not slightly more, its fucking HORRIBLE when it comes to details.
>>
>>54746272
>background listening for mobile
>offline viewing
All of that can be done purely in client-side software. Did they intentionally gimp Android to sell Youtube Red subscriptions?
>>
>>54747019
Fact is despite the crackdowns people will start turning to piracy more and more. It will become harder to control and when your average normie gets 1gbps home internet + a powerful laptop/desktop it will be inevitable that more and more people will start pirating content.

See this is like the time when the US outlawed alcohol. At first it seemed to work but then it only fed to people getting booze illegally. There are simply some things that are never meant to be stopped.

Why I'm saying piracy will soon grow out of control is not because of the advanced video codecs and ever more powerful computers but because streaming and online content providers are making it extremely difficult for the average person to get the content they want and block VPNs to get around the country restriction thing. This shitty region blocking is what will lead people to start turning toward piracy more.

On the bright side at least for VPN companies, they are about to make a fuckton of money from this whole ordeal.

>If anything I expected way more people to start routinely downloading full BDs once they hit 100mbps.
hard drives have stopped getting cheaper on a dollars-per-terabyte basis is what happened
>>
>>54747090
>hevc is still fucking ass
You're gravely mistaken. The latest 10-bit x265 encoder on builds.x265.eu can encode 720p video at like 12FPS on the fast preset. This is on my 2GHz quad-core AMD laptop. I can't imagine how fast it is on a desktop i7.

>YIFY was fucking ass, the guy even said outright it was shit quality
Yes but he also said that the target audience was people with limited internet connections (ie like 50% of the world) so it's okay. 1080p yify rips don't even look that bad on phones but the point is since HEVC is about twice as efficient as H264 a ~1GB 720 HEVC rip will have about twice the quality of a ~1GB 720p H264 which means better quality movies for the same compact yify size. People will like that.

>265 needs 900mb to equal a 1300mb file if not slightly more, its fucking HORRIBLE when it comes to details.
Not anymore. Latest encoder I mentioned above (may 26) has about 40% better compression efficiency compared to H264. I know because I encoded a 720p test clip at 2Mbps with H264 and that same clip at 1Mbps, 800Kbps, and 1.2Mbps with HEVC. The 1.2Mbps had the same visual quality as the 2Mbps H264 file.

HEVC is still unfortunately still not twice as efficient as H64 but it's getting pretty dam close.
>>
>>54746353
The end of the YTP era was the end of YouTube, since the site itself was Poop.
>>
>>54746667
It still is very user based, I think you're just way too nostalgic about old youtube.
>>
>>54747249
And to think Australia is still broadcasting 1080i MPEG2 at ~6-8mbps (was upto 14mbps once, in ~2005...)

Imagine what we could be doing with 5mbps of HEVC...
>>
>>54747163
I did, its ass.

Then again, i have a fast internet connection and 8tb storage left.

>>54747249
I know that was his target audience, Im just saying the dude even said so himself.

Last i checked was in april i think, it as a 1.2GB 264 file vs a 680mb 265 file, the 265 had massively worse fine details, like carvings on boots, small details and such, it really just looked like.. sorry.. YIFY Quality.

Sadly its getting harder to find 264 stuff, due to 265 taking so much less space which would be fine if the quality was there, but seems most encodes are either shit quality ones, or not updated ones if what youre saying is correct.
>>
>>54747249
>fast preset
Found the problem. Unless you're encoding at at least "slower", your results are meaningless. "Fast" is for family videos, not serious releases.

>>
>>54747221
A 4 TB HGST external or any WD/HGST internal can reliably hold quite a few full BDs, even at 25 or 50 GB each. And even if you don't want to keep a full BD for everything you watch, there's no reason to forgo a BD-sourced encode that's at least 10-15Mbps for some 1 GB HEVC trash. You can even delete it after you watch it.

The problem is that SSDs became popular. They're great for the OS, but for media people stopped getting HDDs when they stopped coming with their computers.

>No, now the userbase is lets plays and people blogging about their shitty lives.
That was also a significant portion of the old youtube, it's just that back then it was at least kind of "real", not like now where it's all very overproduced and scripted and everyone is shilling or at least telling you to "like favorite and subscribe :^))))" every 10 seconds and everyone is trying too hard to become the next big personality instead of just making videos for the fun of it.
