When it comes to monitors, what would you say is the slowest "acceptable" response time. Especially for gaming.
Some of my friends have been saying that anything slower than 5ms is useless, others said that 12ms is still perfectly fine. What do you think?

Well, if you play fps games like csgo, bf4, whatever, 12ms is a lot of time that can lead you to win o lose. If you work, i mean, programming, photo editing, video editing... it's not very importsn the response time.
is response time related to Hz?

No.
When it comes to monitors, I'd educate myself and realize that I shouldn't give a shit about manufacturer-listed response times and realize they mean nothing.
If you want to know about the response time and input lag of a monitor, go to tftcentral or similar monitor review sites.

This. The specs are often bullshit. You need reviews that actually take high speed photographs of motion and such.
>Response time over 0ms
Trinitrons do not have this problem.
