VP9 WON

IT'S OVER, HEVC IS FINISHED & BANKRUPT
>>
encoding vp9 is horrid
>>
>>54735300
it's about the same speed as hevc at this point
>>
>>54735257
720P HEVC 285MB.
720P H.264 730MB
What's VP9's size.
>>
>>54735257
>caring about the codec they use
You won't ever be able to see it, why does it matter?
>>
>>54735257
vp9 is trash. you get 264 file sizes only its literally 200 times slower.
>>
Are there hardware encoding for vp9 on gpus yet?
I can't be rendering memes at 2fps you know.
>>
>>54735578
At the moment sure

that is probably why they are going into development

a billion dollay companydo would not invest time in stuff if they had not planned and reviewed it
>>
>>54735599
have you tried 2 pass encoding? Even my shitty laptop with a i3-2330m gets decent speeds then
>>
>>54735434
probably about the same as hevc depending on how long you encode
>>
>>54735578
VP9 is smaller than H264
>>
>>54735641
What if you introduce
grain
?
>>
>>54735578
>At the low end, VP9 provides efficiency advantages over AVC for VP9-capable mobile devices.

U MAD, FAGGOT?

Netflix says VP9 is better than H.264

DEAL WITH IT
>>
>>54735257
In the end it doesn't fucking matter which codec is technically superior. What matters is the support by the industry and h265 as tons of that, just like h264 had before that.

Think about the whole audio codec thing: opus is pretty clearly superior to mp3, still mp3 is used as a de facto standard, God knows why exactly.
>>
>>54735434
720P VP9 is about 15% less than HEVC.
>>
>>54735652
Take any video and compare it in Chrome and IE. VP9 on Youtube has a lower bitrate than AVC, likely resulting in equal quality.
>>
>>54735257
I'm not too keen on HEVC, yet. Though I've been watching it develop, and I test x265 every once in a while. It's alright, but apt to look like an oil painting at higher quantization parameters. Blur.

I have the most experience with x264. It's literally 150x faster doing lossless encodes on my machine, and ends with a better ratio.

Hope daala comes around as well.

>It's alright, but apt to look like an oil painting at higher quantization parameters. Blur.
The problem is that noise is what makes encoding videos so difficult. Removing it makes encoding a lot more efficient, but also destroys the visuals.

I guess it would be a good idea to somehow detect noise, statistically analyse it, store the relevant parameters (spectrum, variance), remove the noise, encode the file and then add the noise again afterwards with a synthesizer. I'd be really curious how that would look. A similar approach it used i.e. in HE-AAC.

VP9 on 4chan when?
VP8 is pure shit.

>"I have no idea how video encoding works" - The Post
"720p" defines a resolution, not a quality-setting.
>>
They say AV1 is based mainly on VP10 and don't mention Daala at all. I was under the impression everything learned from Daala would be put into this new open codec? Was their contribution not worthy of mention?
>>
>>54735831
probably around the time vp10 comes out
blame hiro/what's his name

both riddick games were surprisingly good.
gos to show you how much vin diesel loved the riddick franchise.

Flashlight has square edges, isn't alpha blended. I don't remember that.

i've never used netflix, can somebody tell me how it is? i'd imagine watching movies in your browser with html5 player to be a horrible experience.

>vin actually likes videogames
>many threads on /v/ about how people actually met him in games while playing and hes a cool dude.
>buy starbreeze and personally oversee development
>play in the third riddick movie under the condition that he gets ownership of the riddick license and they dont have to pay him.

he is really ok in my book.
hes also a big fan of dnd and someone swears hes posted on /tg/ a few times.

VP9 is great for its worth. It lets you stream youtube 720p with 2 Mbit connection, best codec you can use in a wide selection of browsers right now
>>
When will vp9 get hardware acceleration. Cause even though it has a smaller file size it still uses up a shit ton of cpu usage
>>
Nvidia Pascal GPU family has full VP9 hardware decoding support

Nvidia Maxwell GM206 also has full VP9 hardware decoding support

Intel Kaby Lake will have full VP9 hardware decoding support, Skylake only had partial/hybrid decoding
>>
>>54735434
What?
>>
>>54737845
>>54737882
Edge supports VP9 acceleration for nvidia and intel hybrid, Firefox/Chromium supports it for only for intel hybrid as far as I can see, and all of them only on windows.
>>
>>54737845
Skylakes have partial acceleration in hardware, most likely Kabylake is the money shot
>>
>>54737965
No, Edge does not have support until Redstone/Anniversary Edition final release
>>
>>54737978
I think it is already enabled for insiders
