Say you were to merge USB (3.0) and Ethernet (Cat 7).

Cat 7 needs 4 pairs of cables and a ground.

This pic (related) has 3 pairs. How would you create the last pair? Could you do it with the Bus and ground drain?

Also, why stop there? Let's merge display port and HDMI with USB as well.

Anyone want to chyme in?

Anyone know why the shell isn't considered a ground?
>>
>>54732641
Yeah, theoretically you could make GND and GND Drain a 4th pair, and just make the shell the ground.

What you'd want though is to make USB 4.0 backwards compatible with old USB devices. So those old devices likely use the 4th pin as ground.

signal shield is connected to ground but should not be used to carry signal/provide a return path

No one except apple uses Thunderbolt.

This.

Thunerbolt is not OWNED by apple. They're just used by apple.

They have sufficient amount of pins to do all the work that ethernet, HDMI, and USB does.

The USB C micro connector is even compatible with thunderbolt.

Future is coming.

Problem with that connector is that it's bulky. The roundness is nice (and futuristic), but it needs to be more narrow like a standard USB A plug. Imagine running a server blade or hub and having hundreds of plugs coming out of it, would you rather have USB A or Thunderbolt? It's obvious it would be USB A.
>>
This is what USB 3.1 Type C is for. King of connectors.
>>
>>54732966
Type C isn't the kind of plug you'd use in a server room environment. It needs to be sturdy and big. Like USB A.
>>
>>54732641
Because it's shielding?
You would not want a ground loop, would you now?
>this is the kind of retardation of "techies" in /g/
>>
>>54733310
Then why does Cat7 use shielding as ground?
>>
>>54733310
Why have a ground and a ground drain though? What's the point of that?
>>
>>54732984
you really don't need the plug to be big in a server environment. just a clear plug/unplug difference
>>
>>54733319
Because it ain't active ground silly, unlike USB.
>>
>>54733336
What he said.

The ground on USB is needed for the power to return. Right?
>>
>>54733344
Right.
>>
>>54733349
What about Ground drain?
>>
>>54733354
I think Ground drain is the same ground that goes into the earth

Regular ground is the return for pin 1 power connector.
>>
>>54733354
>>54733376
Yeah, but I think hes thinking to ground the ground drain to the outer shell? Am I right? I'm thinking about it too right now.
