So yes, I trust various groups of people who work on it and keep an eye on each other's code. And other people who just inspect those who work on the code and people who keep them in check too, etc.

Well, because Windows 10 is a black box. It can potentially be the worst. I don't know what kind of risk I'm taking when I use it, so I'll trust the community of users and developers (and companies that profit from their code) over a single company with the single goal of making profit. Especially if the system is providing their own "app store", where it's only logical to push their own products and paid ads. And if the product is free, I can be sure a single company has different motives than a community that develops the product for their own use.
