what could possibly go wrong?

Thanks for the clarification.

Is there any way to restore ABS keys?
>>
>>54726077
The shine comes from your oils corroding the plastic, making it smooth.

Your best guess would be to sand it down.
>>
I have 2 MX Brown boards, one is pretty new (~1 year probably) and the other one is at least 10 years old.

the tactility on the old board is way weaker than on my new board. are there different versions of the brown switch or do the springs/plastic degrade over time?

Restore? Not really. Some learn to love the shiny look and feel.
Functionally wise there's not much that changes unless your legends are printed using a less durable technique.
The key to picking good keycaps is really to avoid the ones with really thin walls and looking for double-shot legends (which ABS is good at) or dye-subbed legends (good for PBT, but can only print darker). Then they'll function for a long time.

>>54726117
Sanding would probably just make it more smooth. ...unless you used rough sand paper, but then you're basically just scratching it (at best creating a "brushed" look).

Greys are stiffer than clears, if that's what you're asking. Noticeably. Clears are actually a bit too heavy for me for a full-board switch - my Cherry MX board is mostly 65g Zealios.

what's the noppo choco like?

So I dropped a soldering iron on the edge of my board by accident today and ruined a couple of keycaps. Hunting down replacements made me think of you guys after I haven't been here in over a year. Thought it might be nice to write a bit of perspective as somebody who kind of dropped out of the market, and has no desire to change up anything.

So, here's what I got.

TG3-BL82 75% modified with removable cord and full metal case. NKRO, gray tactiles with vintage black springs for most things (basically clears with a linear force curve) and regular grays for spacebar/caps/enter/etc., regular linear vintage blacks for modifiers like ctrl/alt/shift. LED's way toned down and swapped out for 80's style acid green ones.
Separate numpad with all regular gray tactiles except a blue for numlock.
2 dampeners on all keys. DSA profile (what you're stuck with if you want aftermarket caps on a 75%, minus maybe a couple SA sets).

This is what I use every day. Good tactile feel. Heavy enough for my liking with my heavy-handed typing. Throw not too long and not too short. And relatively quiet compared to clicking switches.

Caps are an ABS/PBT mix. The high use ABS keys are starting to shine after a year. The low use ABS and the high use PBT are not.

Switches I've tried.
Red/Black/Blue/Brown/My/Clear/Green/CapacativeBucklingRubber/RubberDome/Scissor Switches/BucklingSpring

Others I still own.
Unicomp Ultra Classic Model M
1984 Model M
BTC-5100 capacitive

I honestly love the Model M's but I prefer something quieter and that fits in my lap for typing every day. Not a big fan of rubber dome of any type but capacative was better than normal and scissor to me. Reds were way too light. Blacks are okay but I don't really like linear. MYs and browns were just gritty reds. Clears are great but I don't like the way the force ramps up at the bottom. Blues are too light. Greens are great but they are too loud.

So just one guy's perspective who found what he liked after trial and error.

I've got some pretty bad ping on about a dozen of my keys. Should I shove some shelf liner behind the pcb or is this a meme?
>>
>>54733657
>or is this a meme?
what

it's fucking shelf liner

and the ping comes either from the metal plate or from the springs in the switches. Insulating material will help with dampening overall noise, but won't do shit for pinging.

>>
>>54733716

"Dampen" in that context refers to making the sound less loud, not to making it wet.

I'm pretty sure it's from the plate and not the switches themselves. I've heard that any additional insulation might he plate's resonance though. When i put they board under a mousepad and some fabric the pinging was like 75% fixed. I'd just rather keep a clear desk. Granted, I'm quite the ignorant fuck when it comes to keyboards, so maybe it was something else going on all together.
>>
>>54733827
You can get a barebones pok3r on WASD and some decent keycaps from somewhere that isn't WASD (and don't get the stock keycaps either). And don't get browns.
>>
>>54733784
That's all well and good for a layman's dictionary, but the proper word is "damping".
>>
>>54733841
Getting rid of resonance from your keyboard via dampening what the case sits on will certainly help, since the plate is resonates into the case.

I'm not so sure about how well it'd work when the insulation is under the PCB, but it'd certainly be worth a try.

>>54733849
I have a feeling most laymen would wonder if I misspelled the word "dampen", but I'll make sure to use the term "damping" when I'm around non-laymen from here on.

They are marketing that keyboard completely wrong. A shitton of continuous / analog inputs is kinda useless in games, but it's incredibly useful in music. Pop an led on each key, and now it is an amazing sequencer + highly articulate instrument.

anyone?
>>
>>54735426
I don't have one, but IIRC they have like 2-3 key rollover so you can't press many keys at a time and that may be an issue in many games.

Other thing is the actuation is high so unless you think you can handle it and don't have a preference for lighter actuations you can suffer from fatigue from repeated presses.

I think it's worth a try if you're curious, they never drop in value so if you buy one you can probably sell it back for what you got it

Its actually a good idea you dumb faggot.
there have been many games where the mouse was fine but lack of movement sensitivity ruined it and forced you to use a controller.
>>
>>54737633
it's a good idea but the software way they do it sucks. They are just emulating an xbox 360 controller with their keyboard because no games support it natively.

That means you are better off just getting an xbox 360 controller or a clone of one to get a better gaymen experience. You also get rumble with a real controller unlike with their keyboard.
>>
>>54737710
Well isnt that how nearly all gaming peripherals work? They almost all literally emulate a 360 controller since it has the most support especially on windows.
I dont really think its bad if thats the case. Also i dont even remember the last time i cared for having rumble in a game, i dont even notice it anymore and sometimes its just annoying and unecessary

once it clicks, it's actuated
that's physically how it works
the click is the middle part sliding off the contact leaf and slapping the bottom of the switch

if you want to get autistic, technically it's actuated just before it makes the sound

another question for people with clears: do you bottom out on your modifiers when you hold them for an extended period of time?
>>
>>54738584
Nothing so far, I just set that up for the picture.

I'm not sure what you'd want to do on that. It'd certainly be a viable option with a tablet sized screen or just an external monitor, otherwise it's hardly suited for doing anything, at least not when your desktop with a dual monitor setup is right in the other room.

I ordered a keyboard off of mechanicalkeyboards.com and was wondering if anyone on here from Canada has done the same
I usually track all my packages, but after the board was sent to Montreal, I got no real information on it
I read somewhere because it's an international package, that as soon as it hits Canada, you can't track it
But it's been over a week now that it departed in Montreal and I assume towards me
Is it true I can't track it at all and should just wait it out?
I just ordered a monitor 3 days ago and it's already in so I'm just itching to get that keyboard too
>>
>>54738743

>>
>>54738781
Yup, nothing
>>
>>54738791

I've noticed that when shipping stuff through Europe with DHL, each national branch had their own tracking updates on their own website only.

>>54738845
Every site seems to be saying the same thing
Just seems weird to see it in transit from Montreal for over a week with no updates
>>
>>54738910
Could be stuck in customs, who knows. Wait another week, and if nothing happens, contact the seller for an update. They can actually inquire about the package with the carrier, since they have the receipt.

I saw this earlier on leddit. Thought it was kinda neat, though it's really just emulating an Xbox 360 controller for its "analog" sensitivity. I have no idea how it's supposed to do that with bog standard Cherry MX switches either. Come to think of it, I'm not sure how legit this thing is.

Also, whose bright idea was it to use fucking MicroUSB, or to only offer it in a TKL configuration? I like my numpads, dammit, and I don't want my cable to break if I look at it the wrong way.

It doesn't use cherry mx switches. It uses flaretech optical (non-contact) switches.

It's TKL because it's a gaymen keyboard. Most gaymers don't need the numpad and it's more ergonomic since you don't have to spread your arms as much.

I don't even care for the gaymen aspect of it very much, I just want one because of the switch technology that's inside. It sounds fucking awesome.

Is there any factor in actual operation that makes them superior to a high end rubber dome? Is it pure hobbyist/aesthetic value?

It seems pretty pointless to shell out ~300USD for a glorified rubber dome when you can get mechanical switches of your preference for cheaper. (I don't even have a high res camera to take pictures if I buy a meem Topre board)
>>
>>54746839

really just the capacitive contact and small tactile difference of the spring. it's worth 100 dollars to me, nowhere near 250-300.
>>
>>54746839
IMO the Topre switch design is one of the best - you don't have to bottom out keys to actuate like Rubberdome, but also doesn't suffer from hysterisis like Cherry switches.

This theoretically means that keys should have much better long-term consistency and durability compared to rubberdomes or cherry switches.

The feel of typing on Topre really is like a hybrid between rubberdome and mechanical, so if that is your thing then Topre is for you.

Personally after having used normal rubberdomes, cherry brown, cherry blue, cherry red, and unicomp buckling spring, Topre is my favorite overall.

The keyboard itself is fully functional, but the keycaps are all messed up.

What kind of keycaps would I want to get for it?

Forgot to mention that it's my first mechanical keyboard.

Rollover for the model M's are horrid. Makes them nigh unsusable for any 'high-action' modern vidya. The could probably work for more casual stuff, though.

The bottom row is beyond non-standard, you're going to have trouble finding keycaps for that.

You'd be better off to put the money that a set of replacement keycaps that aren't as shit as the original ones and actually fit the bottom row towards new a keyboard

I had this idea years ago. The only problem is, no program is prepared for it. They should standardize the HID class or somthing.

I'm not going to buy a new keyboard since I don't have the money for that.

Are keycaps for the CM Storm Quickfire TK THAT expensive?

I own a Topre (55g Realforce), buckling spring (unicomp) and have tried cherry MX browns and blues. I think Topre is the best followed by the MX blues.
