Is your machine from the mid 90's or older? If yes, then install DOS and enjoy some pretty sweet old games on original hardware. If not then >>54719819
>>
>>54719837
no, but I have a Dell Optiplex in my closet I was wanting to fuck around with
>>54719819
thanks anon

this is just for shiggles mostly
>>

>just for shiggles

Then dosbox if you just want to run DOS software. If you actually want to play around with it in general then install something like freedos (works fine virtualized with some config tweaks to keep things like cpu usage by old software at a sane level).
>>
unless it's an old machine, you'll find dosbox is a better solution, for multiple reasons, such as;
- you can adjust the cpu speed in dosbox, some dos programs misbehave if the cpu they run on is too fast (this is also why turbo buttons were a thing)
- dosbox emulates a wide range of dos-era hardware, such as older cpus, soundblaster, adlib, etc. ensuring software can be used to their full potential
there's really no advantage to using dos on a modern machine over dosbox, only disadvantages (such as the aforementioned lack of dos-era hardware)

You can run lynx and BitchX.
>>
I had to use FreeDOS at my first data center gig to install an ipmi application on some shitty supermicro box because plebian was being gay with its package. Needless to say, had no problems setting up ipmi on FreeDOS lol
>>
look op I know you want to play DOOM but please just use Chocolate or zdoom, they're way better than dosbox and support more mods
>>
>>54719686
I use DOS 6.22 as my main OS on my 25MHz 486SX, I don't want to ruin it with Windows.

Where can real dos actually be downloaded, these days? I mean ms-dos or ibm's pc-dos, not freedos.
>>
>>54723361
I love it, serial mouse came with PS2 adapter, cleared it, new ball, actually the logo and yellow color came off cleaning it with alcohol LOL.

Of course, thanks to the massive collections of both Winworld and Vetusware it's probably one of the best legacy platforms next to Windows and maybe IRIX for non-games use.
>>
>>54722809
With 25mhz I wouldn't dare running windows on it.
>>
>>54724620
3.11 works great actually
>>
>>54724645
no fucking way. I actually found windows 95 to be the most stable on a 486DX4 @100mhz
>>
>>54719686
Install gentoo.
>>
>>54724657
I'm talking about 3.11? What has 95 to do with it?
>>
>>54724721
compared to 95 it was actually slower on better hardware.

but i never tried w311 on older hardware than a 386@66mhz, it wasn't a good experience.
>>
>>54723399
I think you can't do so for free legally, since it's proprietary and still under copyright.
>>
>>54724657
>95 on a 486SX-25
good fucking luck, my SX-25s can barely run their Win3.1 preloads
>>
>>54723399
winworld
bootdisk.com
tons of places

>>54724781
it's a grey area, MS doesn't really give a fuck about DOS anymore but I don't think they ever freely released it

nonetheless it's unsupported, ancient shit that they don't really care if someone posts an image of, they actually do monitor abandonware sites too, winworld got a takedown notice for Office 2K from them, but they're still hosting everything else.
>>
>>54724760
Ohh, I see. I never tried 95 on it, got other hardware for that.
>>
Has anyone been able to decouple Windows 95/98 from it's version of DOS in order to run it under FreeDOS?

I tried this so so many times, actually trying to use the installation environment and executables from Win98 and making them "boot Win95" but I was never successful.
>>
>>54724987
I bet the shit's so tightly coupled with DOS 7 you'd be really hard pressed to extract it, sounds like a cool research project though.
>>
>>54725037
The main purpose of my intent for doing that at the time was for one thing, "cross platform" Windows environment and the other thing was, you'd have Windows in a "live" type environment, which back then wasn't a thing.

heh, nice
though i can't imagine it'd be that hard to find an EISA soundblaster-compatible

Wonder wonder what that second ISA card is under the ethernet card?
The resistor ladder DAC was just a fun project.
