pleb here, I've been meaning to ask you guys, is it right for my ram to be clocked at 799MHz?

I'm pretty sure these were advertised as higher when I built this pc long ago, 1600 maybe, why are some clocked higher like these >>54719552

I had two 2TB drives die on me this year :(
>>
>>54723681
DDR stands for double data rate. You double the number shown in Speccy to get the actual speed of your memory. So your sticks are running at the rated 1600MHz, whereas >>54719592 for instance is DDR4 3333MHz.
>>
>>54723845
That sucks, i haven't had a drive die on me in years. My old drives I copy the data from them and then put them in my closet (so it's sorta like a backup I don't update). That way if a drive dies in just bring back the drive (or drives) the data originally came from.

Of course new data i would lose out on, but the majority of my media that is new is being put on my newest drives, so not a huge concern. And I also have an online backup using crashplan, it's slow for the initial upload, but it's cheap and it works.

Probably going to go 1080 this time. I realize the Ti card will be better in every measureable way, but if I can get a 1080 to run at 60fps on max settings at 1080p ill be happy. The 760 4gb is a great card for what I paid, but in some situations it does show its age, specifically with heavy light effects. Doubling the memory is probably the biggest thing im looking at.

People will say im shilling but I haven't had a Radeon card since the 4000 series and even then, id buy an XFX if I were to. EVGA has been good to me.

encoding times. My i5 is great for gaming but really lags when trying to encode videos. I have many Blu-ray rips that get up to around 50gb and even with my i5 overclocked, encodes take up to 1 hour and 15 minutes. This is for a single video and I do up to 5 videos at a shot. That's almost 7 hours of leaving my my main PC locked at 100% usage unable to do anything else. With moar coars I would be able to open my encoding software in a VM, set 4-6 cores for encoding, and use the rest for other stuff.

Not to mention newer standards. USB 3.1 ports/USB C. More pcie lanes so I can run nvme SSDs at fully capability.

>>
>>54727994
no.You'd be buying into an old chip, older standard, and on the chance the motherboard just dies, you're fucked.

A 4790k could be had for $250 and Z97 board for $120. More money? Yes.

Or save and get a brand new 6700k and Z170. I say this because you plan to keep the CPU/mobo for a long time, don't buy into old standards.

I also own a refurbished Z68 gen 3 board for a years now and i Oc the shit out of my cpu and everything is running smooth as fuck.

I don't upgrade cards very often and I have yet to own a "flagship" near launch. Hell, my 8800 Ultra was almost a year old when I bought it. The 1080 should carry me for 5-7 years for what I do and SLI is always an option.

figured this thread would be good for this.

So this is my first build. I have always been that guy spending over $1k on laptops/ultrabooks and never owned a desktop. Figured today was the day.

I am trying to keep it under $1200 with the 970. I know I can just remove the astros, but I am in need of good headphones and I also game on ps4 and having the ability to listen to pc and ps4 at the same time is a plus.

Thoughts? advice?
>>
>>54737998
Buy real headphones for 1/2 the cost and enjoy much better headphones.

Also, dont buy Windows 10, especially if you're building in the next few weeks. Just buy W7 or W8 off reddit (should cost $20-30) then use the free upgrade to W10.

I did it 3 days ago with my gfs new desktop, saved me $70 from buying W10.

I was thinking about this, but then I remember reading somewhere that may is the last month one can upgrade to windows 10.

Any recommendations for headphones that can do what the astros can do?
>>

>may is the last month one can upgrade to windows 10.
July

like i fucking said, if you're building in the next month, you're fine.

Any headphones can do what the astros do if you're not retarded, they just have a built in DAC.

Buy a USB DAC if you want.

Honestly i'd recommend doing a LOT more research on audio before spending $200 on shitty gaymer headphones, they're legit ~$50 headphones, if that.

I would suggest looking into Xeons, some of them are just rebranded i7's without a gpu and the ability to overclock so they sell for less. Neweggs servers are all fucked right now so I can't point you to a Xeon that performs better than the i5 4460 for less than $180 right now but I would definitely look into it.

It looks like you are getting about 100mhz more with the 6600k than all the Xeons I am seeing around that price, some of the Xeons offer HT but if you are gaming you will probably not even notice it.

if you have microcenter nearby you could probably save a bit more.

Also if you're getting a B150 board you can't overclock so its kinda wasted money getting the "K" cpu, since the "K" CPUs are meant for overclocking.

Should've got the 5960x or the 5820k getting the 5930k with dual GPUs just tells us you're an idiot who either doesn't understand how PCI lanes are used, or simply likes to waste money for no performance gains.

I really like the Noctua because it is so quiet, but it is about $70, also the MSI 970 takes a slight hit in performance but I read that it is also very quiet, just don't expect them to honor a rebate. If you can wait till Zen you might be able to get some of this for less although DDR4 may go up due to demand.

You might be thinking of AVX2 instructions, which raped haswell thanks to adaptive voltage.

Apparently anything higher than 1.29v is just too much for the shitty thermal paste to handle, and that's what I need to break 4.7.

Do you have a Microcenter near you? I think they offer the $30 off on all their mobos, when I built my 3770k pc for some reason there was an extra $100 discount on my receipt, I assume it was another combo discount but I didn't ask for fear they would remove it.

Their combo deals are cheaper but you have to pay tax
>>
>>54739072
If you have microcenter look at the 5xxx or the 4xxx series as they will be significantly cheaper than online prices.

Skylake however because it's newer is only gonna be like $20-30 cheaper than online (meaning the tax you pay will probably be more than your savings)

I got my 5820K + motherboard for $460 from microcenter compared to $550 from newegg.
>>
>>54739130
Do you save $30 if you buy any cpu and mobo or does the cpu have to be listed on the sale page
>>
>>54739182
Not sure as I have only ever done it with their promotional CPUs. It's not worth it to save $30-40, it IS worth it if you're saving $80+
>>
>>54738936
For about $60 more you can step into socket 2011 and a 5820k. Also you can get a Xeon down the road for that future upgradeability. Skip the Xion case as well, I built my first PC in one and it was cool to look at but that was before I knew about cable management. Look at the Corsair 200r or 300r.
>>
>>54738606
And that folks is why I didn't buy a 5930k. My 5820k holds a higher stable OC and is in essence the same chip minus 3way+ SLI which I will never use anyway. Glad I saved $130.
>>
>>54739253
will the 5820k really be an upgrade, because like I said, if it is worth it, I can upgrade from the one I have there to the i7-6700k.
>>
>>54739334
the 5820k is a 6700k with 2 more cores, double the L3 cache and slightly more power hungry.

6700k has 1.75B transistors
5820k has ~2.6B transistors

As long as what you're doing can utilize the extra cores and cache, the 5820k is far superior to the 6700k.

There are cheaper ways to upgrade, a major sell off of 8350s and mobos are expected during Zen's release, also there are many different Xeon options, you can get 2 quad core Xeons, a server board and 32gb of ram for just over $100 that will rival an i7

Clock speed means nothing when comparing different CPU architectures, especially cross-brand.

Efficiency, transistor count and cache size all play a much bigger role- just look into benchmarks for your applications and see what works for you.

At stock the 9590 is a 220w power draw, so I figured it would be more than 200w by default.

I personally can't recommend anyone purchase an AMD chipset right now, AM3 and the 900 series chipsets are 3-4 years old at this point, they dont even have PCIe 3.0 or USB 3.0 native support. And they only support a handful of SATA 3 lanes, you need add on chips for more, same with USB.

Not to mention all future AMD CPUs will be on socket AM4, so there is literally no upgrade path available.

Wait for zen or buy intel, that's really your only choices at the moment unless you're on a SUPER extreme budget.

dual Xeons both overclocked to i5 speeds is not bad for gaming and it will only get better when multithreaded games become the norm, of course this will not beat an i7 with 4 cores at current games, but it will destroy that the i7 at some of the new ones and you save about $500.

You could have two i7' with 8 cores at 4.5GHz, and it would still suck, unless you use SLI/CFX, because how the card talk to processors. It would actually make the performance worse then a single same i7.

>little the upgrades would be for you
Yes, for me, who else would i be speaking for dipshit?
> then act like its a whole new world when you do finally upgrade and have your mind blown and you rave about how amazing shit is.
I never said it wouldn't be amazing, i have used and built systems with SSD's they are a bit faster at booting up and launching programs, ut once again, I HAVE NEVER HAD A FUCKING ISSUE WITH MY SETUP, you keep failing to remember this point

You should kill all of your blood family then commit suicide

Ya see, I consider a slow as fuck HDD system a piece of shit, you could make a $60 quality of life investment and buy yourself an SSD and at least make it FEEL faster.

As it is you're just screaming out I DONT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS

No fucking shit, it works but it's slow as dicks.

Dont tell me it runs fine, I have a fucking 10k raptor drive too you stupid nigger, its slow garbage and has been for almost 8 years.

It's a good thing your opinions are shit too
Jesus fuck do you own stock in companies that produce SSD's? You haven't shut the fuck up about how i should upgrade because you think it will FEEL faster to me. Im already at the maximum number of drives, i dont want to replace my boot drive, deal with it nigger.

The only LITERAL difference between the 5820k and 5930k (besides the $200 price increase and meaningless clockspeed bump) is the fact it has 40 PCIe lanes at your disposal compared to the 5820k which only has 28 PCIe lanes.

Now if you're unaware, PCIe lanes are really only useful for GPUs and other PCI cards (RAID cards or 10Gbps NICs, GPUs, etc) The simple fact you have a SINGLE GPU using up a whole 16 PCIe lanes (It would only lose 1-3% performance dropping to 8 PCIe lanes but that's besides the point here). Leaving you a whopping 32 unused PCIe lanes on that CPU.

So TLDR here is you spent extra money on a 5930k when it's getting you zero benefit over the 5820k which costs hundreds of dollars less. If you stole the 5930k or happen to have gotten as part of the Intel insiders program, congrats. But otherwise it was just money wasted.

Only get the 5930k if you're doing triple or quad GPU, or you have a stupidly large RAID array or similar. Single GPU or even Dual GPU will be fine on the 5820k and save you a good chunk of change.

That might be why, i have a 8320, and a TDP of 125

>>54745172
oh you are sperging out on the price. i got mine for free. even if i didn't i would've gotten one from ebay anyways where it was only $40 more than the 5820k at the time because people were flooding it from retail edge.
>>
>>54745257
Yeah like I said in the post, if you got it for near 5820k price it's fine.

Never knew speccy was so informative; I like.

Cpu temp lies.
Speedfan report is accurate tho.

Also, why does my 1.5tb show as 0?

They should make a Raptor SSD, it would just spin the SSD around so fast that it would probably create a vortex, if we were to use the theory of relativity who knows how this would increase or decrease performance or if it would create a black hole that sucks up all your trap pics.
