Anything but a gtk distro

If you are a casual user use Ubuntu, Elementary OS or Mint.

If you are new to Linux and want to learn more about it try Debian.

If you are an advanced user you could try Arch or Gentoo.

Depends on what you want to do with linux. If you want a good, stable desktop OS then use debian.

answer is gentoo

Too much time on your hands: Gentoo
Boring office stuff like spread sheets: Red Hat, CentOS
Gaming and noobs general: Ubuntu
Entry-level coding: Debian
Reale serious coding, top-end server stuff and hacking: Arch

Dr. Donald Knuth uses Ubuntu
Linus Torvalds uses Fedora
Dr. Richard Stallman uses GNewSense
(NOOBS)

Actual pros use Arch or Gentoo.

Gentoo, Ubuntu, Debian, and Redhat/CentOS are the only ones really worthwhile.

You can install software from the unstable and testing repositories, in case if you want to be bleeding edge.

I can agree with this.

Gentoo for personal computers (if you're tech literate)
Ubuntu for gaming systems or if you're tech illiterate, also for trying out Canonical technology (e.g. LXD or MAAS)
Debian or CentOS for servers

It's actually very stable compared to arch, for one thing. It has more installation recipes and flavours than arch does, allowing for bigger customisability than arch. Almost every single distro out there is based off of debian, so you can be sure that anything which works on other distros, will work on debian easily. Everything also just works out of the box, debian aims to be easy to use as well.

Additionally all the packages in the repository are actually actively maintained and supported by the Debian Project, unlike anything in the AUR.

Do you know the status of graphic software? I need Krita, Gimp, Rawtherapee and Darktable to be fresh.
>>

Wrong.
Debian sid gets the upstream updates in a timely fashion. It is also adressed in DSAs.
>>
Good for most users: Ubuntu (or flavor)

For committed learners: Slackware

Debian is a solid choice to straddle most use purposes in one fell swoop. Read the instructions on how not to break your system.

Just start with something. It doesn't have to be one if the most commonly recommended ones.

Mageia.

OpenSUSE.

Deepin would keep many users happy.

If you are a neet with a day's worth of free time *every* day, give gentoo a try. Otherwise, install Debian.

I use elementaryOS because I don't know what I'm doing and I'm not about to start. Also I think that standard Ubuntu looks ugly.
