Not to bring up the old copypasta, but people forget that Linux really actually is, GNU/Linux. Most of the operating system is GNU in origin, and largely GNU / FSF maintained. What system do you think Google runs their servers on? Windows... Mac...? No. It's the same way with other corporations. Not sure about IBM though, Stallman has had nothing good to say about their role and I don't know what their motivation would be.
That's my guess anyway. Google saves a massive amount of money on R&D by just supporting the FSF. It's the same with large firms spending millions on lobbying, people think "wow that's a lot". But it isn't, not compared to what they get back.
