Obviously the shuttle form factor cannot hold enough fuel to be able to release enough energy to break away from the gravitational pull of the Earth. It needed rocket boosters go get it into orbit.

The point is that the Buran was guided by on-board computers in 1980 and it autonomously successfully negotiated re-entry and landed on a tarmac, without human input.
The Soviet/Russian Energia rocket was/is able to take off, dock with the Mir (and now ISS) space station and then undock and return to Earth to be reused. Again, on its own and guided by onboard computers.
