PCs Aren't Dying. They're Just Way Overpriced.

>worldwide PC shipments down 13 percent in the first quarter
>cost of truly gaming-changing laptops is still too damn high

>among laptops
>sales of sub-$300 systems grew by a healthy 19%
>sales of premium laptops with prices over $700 shrank by a modest 4 percent
>between $300 and $700 fell by a remarkable 19 percent

>The reason midrange laptops are doing so poorly is that most of them aren't appreciably better than the old models they're meant to replace
>Every laptop over $300 should have a 1920 x 1080 screen and a solid-state drive
>telling people that they can now get a 6th-gen Core i5 to replace their 2nd-gen Core i5 is not going to cut it

>Every laptop over $300 should have a 1920 x 1080 screen and a solid-state drive
I think $300 is a bit cheap for having the both of those, but yeah I shouldn't have to pay over a fucking grand to get a 1080p screen.

While ssd is a meme its difficult to get decent battery life without one.

I guess i could tolerate a sketchy ssd if i had an external hdd and a script to make daily backups for me.
>>
>>54701816
>difficult to get decent battery life without one
What's even considered a decent battery life these days? I've always got a plug nearby when I use my laptop so anything more than like 20 minutes is good enough for me.
>>
>>54701680
This. I'm looking for something to replace my 4, almost 5, year old laptop. But it's just not worth the upgrade.

About 6 hours of regular use.
Some light machines like Chromebooks can get 8-14 hours on one charge.

Idle and closed, the average laptop can last 6 days, idle but with minimum screen brightness while open they can go 20 hours or so

Meanwhile my t42 with a 9 cell gets 4 hours of regular use, 9 hours idle open and 2 days closed
>>
yet my $40 thinkpad never goes about 80% cpu usage.

huh.
>>
Laptops have been cannibalised by smartphones as go to portable devices. The only reason you see sales of cheap as shit laptops is due to 3rd worlders and the fact that school children need something to type on.
>>
anyone got a recommendation for a laptop that has all of these features

>i7 or better processor
>15 inch HD screen
>1tb or larger HD preferably SSD
>highest end graphics card available
>backlit keyboard
>numberpad
> integrated optical drive
>professional looking case (no spaceship looking alien bullshit)
>good battery life

>price is no object

>weight is a mild concern, but it cant be to much larger than the screen.

Dell Precision 5000 series 15".
Basically a Business version of the Alienware 15".

Intel Xeon E3
64GB RAM
2TB HDD+ 1TB SSD
4K 15" display
Professional equivalent of the Geforce 980MX
Backlit
No Optical (fuck you its 2016, get an external for $20)
13 hours battery life with Nvidia Optimus enabled.
2.7kg, only 200g heavier than the 15" Macbook Pro

Costs like $4000
>>
>>54702017
way too pricy for those specs man. That's exactly the problem.
>>
>>54702455

The 5000 Series maxes out with a Quadro M1000M which is roughly equivalent to a GeForce 950M. I'm willing to admit I'm wrong if you show a source saying you can get a 980MX.

PC got stagnant due to Intel vs Intel competition.

Zen and Polaris will change that.
1000$ PC will be great again and Intel wqill have to challenge that.
Back in the day 1000$ was the price of the TOP end PC, 1000$ was what you expected to spend for the best shit on market, rather than for one GPU.
Chant polaris untul we're delivered back to greatness.

Newer laptops have way better performance and battery life though
>>
>>54701767
>>Every laptop over $300 should have a 1920 x 1080 screen and a solid-state drive
that's actually true though

there's no reason to buy *any* computer made in the last 5 years without at least both

unless its a desktop replacement, every laptop should be
>under 5lbs
>1080p IPS screen or better
>7 hours of battery life or better
>have solid state storage options/availability
>>54702017

if you have literally no standards, or if you got that genuinely for free, then that'd make sense
>>
>a healthy 19%
>a modest 4%
>a remarkable 19%

Also that picture isn't true at all
>>
>>54710432
>720p and HDD costs less
they cost less but offer essentially 0% of what's necessary for comfortable, stress free computer use

you're like my fucking retarded friend who tried to convice another friend of ours to spend $250 on a 720p television instead of $300 on a similar sized 1080p variant

it's so depricated that its not worth spending any money on; 1366x768 or below, or HDD over SSD
>>
>>54710468
Then spend the extra on 1080p. It's not that difficult.

You'll also be getting much battery components too, so it's a win for you
>>
>>54710497
>Then spend the extra on 1080p
I will, but that extra should be at the $300 price point.

we've had chromebooks offer this for 2 years now. There's no reason the same can't be standardized elswhere
>>
laptops are a dying meme
>>
>>54710519
Are you poor?

If you're poor and want 1080p, get a chromebook or tablet.

If you're not poor and you want 1080p, get a serious laptop with an i7 and ssd.
>>
>>54710541
you dont even have a fucking point

I'm not poor and I spend $600 on a thinkpad retailing for $1000 to get an IPS display

what I'm saying, and the article is saying, is that that isn't fair and it's causing laptop manufacturers to lose sales in the midrange PC market

>hurr there is no such thing as stuff being too expensive
like holy shit
>>
>>54710536

>>
its becaus e we are using up all of the supplies to make computers
we are running out of resources and so we need to raise the prices
>>
>2012 laptop
over 5 pounds
>2016 laptop
2.7 pounds

quit pretending specs are the only thing that dictate price in the laptop market
>>
>>54710581
How are they losing sales?

You think a skylake laptop i3 isn't better than a first gen i3?
You think 4gb ddr4 isn't better than 4gb ddr3?
You think newer components aren't more energy efficient than 5 year old laptop components?

You're a fucking retard.

If anything, now that atoms have taken over the budget range, we should be seeing more i3 and i5 laptops gaining popularity from people who need performance on a budget.
>>
>>54702017

Why buy a new laptop with ports that don't support my DVI monitor when I already own an adapter that cost me $100 back in the day and my machine still performs excellently since I upgraded the RAM to 16GB and installed 2 SSDs.

I literally have no reason to upgrade which is why I also have a Surface Pro 3 64 i3 as basic computing needs.

All a normalfag really needs for computing is a decently speced smartphone and maybe a chromebook for homework assignments or doing taxes. Laptops are a dying breed considering cellphones are 10x as portable and can perform a majority of the same functions with better battery life to boot. There will always be a market for powerful business class machines, but the consumer market for laptops is officially on suicide watch.
