Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

I have a question

Whenever I want to select a file using an application (e.g. selecting an image to be posted via firefox), I get this butt-ugly thing in pic related.

I don't care for the aesthethics, but for some reason this thing only gives me very limited access. I have four drives in my computer, and I can't access any of them with this dialogue box. It's no problem with a regular file manager, but this thing here for some reason can't access shit (or rather, doesn't even display it).

How can I fix this?
>>
>>54682330

the init part does only that
systemd-timesyncd keeps clocks in sync with ntp
systemd-analyze analyzes boot times
localectl sets the locale
etc

It's called a fork anon.
Linux-libre is a fork of linux kernel with binary kernel blobs removed because inclusion of non-free kernel blobs (necessary for a lot of hardware combinations to work) is against FSF's philosophy.

Please refrain from using words and terms you don't understand.

JavaScript can be good, but it can also be bad, just like normal software (since JavaScript is a complete programming language), if it's non-free, it's bad.
Read this for more information about JavaScript: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/javascript-trap.en.html

Hope there are some emacs gurus here. I started using emacs and been customizing it a bit. Anyone can tell me how to remove these seperator columns? Ideally I'd like to have just a thin vertical line between buffers.

I'm sorry, but I would like to ask *you* some questions:
What font is that?
How did you the status bar to look like that?
>>

The font is Ubuntu Mono, the mode line is using powerline. There are a few implementations for Emacs, I use this one https://github.com/milkypostman/powerline
Remember to install the patched fonts.

Just a few weeks ago I had a whole machine at work overtaken by encryption ransomware because I double-clicked on a .js file, which I presumed would either open it in a text editor or prompt me for confirmation before executing it. It just executed it and fucked my station. I was using Windows 10.

I know it was stupid to fall for malware but there's a thing nowadays about anything executable and not pre-approved requiring confirmation before running. I genuinely thought I could safely double click the file to examine it, and that if .js files weren't associated with a syntax highlighter on my system, it would ask me to confirm before running it.

How is it that in this day and age, all it requires it passing around a .js file to freely spread and run malware all willy-nilly with so little user interaction? This kind of shit was supposed to be done with at the turn of the millenium.

>proprietary, lots of insecurities and unresolved issues, will be replaced by html5 in the next few years
Stop saying Flash will be "replaced" by HTML5. Flash is an animation platform. HTML5 is a web development platform. Flash's web development usages will be replaced with HTML5 because it makes sense, because web development is an usage for which Flash wasn't intended for in the first place. Web developers borrowed Flash for web development because there was no better tool available before HTML5, but it was a stretch in the first place. It's bullshit to blame Flash for being vulnerable when its usage is being stretched way beyond its design. There is currently no HTML5 animation software that is one tenth as proficient as Flash for making interactive animations and Flash's intended market won't be under threat until such a software exists.

Because it's a webpage development platform.

Do you have any idea how animation works? How complex and versatile Flash has become over the years?

HTML5 is a language. Flash is a language (Actionscript 3) but it's also an art and animation interface. Until there's some kind of software that can streamline animation and compile it into HMTL5 as proficiently as Flash can streamline animation and compile it into SWF files, then HTML5 is not a replacement for Flash.

Web developers calling for the abolition of Flash because it's no longer useful to them, when it's been a prized software for animators, amateurs and professionals, to do their craft on and distribute it over the Web, is the closest thing to "cultural appropriation" that can happen in web development. Web developers forked Flash over from the animation field to make it a web development platform because it could kinda do the job, but Flash is an animation software. Web developers don't own Flash and it's not up to them to decide if it's relevent or not. It's still relevent to the amateur and professional animation field, therefore it's there to stay, whether you like it or not. So pull your head out of your ass.

Any of the various containers can hold your animation. Now if you mean shitty games, then you're correct it needs to advance. But for web pages that need animation, you can easily throw it in a video container and load it like any other applet.

Sigh. It's like I'm talking to a bunch of walls.

In what software would I make this animation which HTML5 would be so versatile in containing and rendering, if not Flash? What animation software can make interactive vector animations that can be rendered in HTML5 and which has the animation and programming tools which Flash has? Animation just doesn't get pulled out of one's ass. You have to make it in a software first.

Unless you're solely clinging on to the fact that shitty games have to be made in flash, then i guess you're 1% correct, and have a weak ass argument.

You could implement such malware on Linux, it's only an operating system.

The problem with it would be executing it with enough priviledges do to more harm than just remove your personal files (which in itself can be a huge problem if youre a big dumb dummy and don't have a backup solution).

The repository-package based installation of software on most GNU/Linux platforms makes spreading viruses harder, since an average user is very unlikely to just download a 3rd party package from a 3rd party website, install it and run the software.

You also have to take in consideration that not a lot of software comes in this way.
The only software I've ever installed from a 3rd party vendor outside the repos is BricsCAD.

And the opensource community is not full to the brim with little shitheads who try to make your life as miserable as possible for personal gain. It's pretty much bunch of volunteers.

Video editing software is not designed to make animation you stupid fucking dicknose.

See, this is exactly what I said was happening. Entitled people working in the IT field, never even having opened Photoshop before, deciding that we can just put an entire legacy of animation and gaming production techniques into the guillotine because they're able to code their blinky MMORPG animated ads with characters sliding in and out of the field in HTML5 now. One of the points of Flash was being able to make animations that were rendered live and interactive in as many or as few aspects as the user meant to. No creation platform has reached this level of versatility.

Basically, saying that "Flash" can be replaced because I can make videos in a video editor, render them and load them in a video container is like saying video editing software is obsolete because I'm able make GIF animation in a hex editor. Both the tools and the end results are significanly more limited in every way.

>>

backup on the same disk is pretty much useless anyways anon, it doesn't protect against disc failure and these types of malware encrypt any connected drive. get a seperate drive either external or internal + dock and connect only when making backups, keep disconnected the rest of the time and away from the pc so if anything physically happens to the pc like some drunkass at a party falling on your particleboard desk and destroying it along with the pc doesn't also damage your backup

Adobe is not to blame for having made the only decent web-portable interactive animation platform in the field. Anyone is welcome to try to make a proficient interactive live-render vector art and animation software that works with HTML5. Iin fact, I've been waiting IMPATIENTLY for that to just happen since our modern day Nostradamuses here have started claiming that HTML5 will replace Flash, something like 5 fucking years ago. But no one has come forward with such a software to prove that it's feasible. Though shit, that would be the only way the "HTML5 will replace Flash" bullshit would hold up.

Sorry, I thought you were the other guy arguing with me.

To be honest, after explaining that Flash can be used to make complete, professional level, interactive vector-based art, games and animations in a platform both accessible to professional and amateurs, I don't know what else I can add. It's a multimedia software before anyuthing. It shouldn't be pitted against a mere programming language to evaluate its relevence as a whole.
>>
>>54688345
so if i took some rendering engine like let's say webkit, an animation software like blender, html5 and something for vector graphics (i think there was some project to make svg animations) and slapped them into one program with a retard-proof gui i could replace flash? or am i missing something?
