Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Any thermal issues? People seem to mention heating problems on forums.
Also how's the battery life?

I have a thinkpad yoga 15. It's terrible, every time it starts something rewrites the UEFI boot order to boot windows first. I had to rename the grub efi file to Windows.efi just to get it to boot into grub reliablly.
>>
>>54669689
Never had any heat issues. And the battery life is somewhere around 3 hours, maybe 4 or 5 if you have the screen turned off (and play music with it).
I was worried too at first that it would get hot, but no problems so far.
What do you intend to do with it? I can imagine that if you'd want to render movies with it it'll get hot, but then again, I'd use a desktop for that.

Just personal preference, I would spring a bit extra for a T420, X130 or for a 2560/70p

There is a X120e user who did a mobo swap on it, (s)he likes it, i'd say let them chime in.

X130e is much more thicker than the X120e, and its still bigger than a X220 lol

No, I couldn't be happier with my T420s

Btw, if you want to games with it, you can't. Just tried CS:GO and uninstantiated it. Got like 45 FPS with everything on low 1600x900

However, you can play the best first person shooter ever, Quake III Arena , which is open source. What's there not to love?

You have to use 720 if you wanna play any games, it simply can't handle 1600x900 on pretty much any game.

Helle everyone.

I'm an aspiring CompSci student and want to know which laptop best fits me. Do you guys have any ideas (looking for a laptop that can last 4+ years). Of course within the Thinkpad series.

Problem is, I live in the Netherlands and the supply of second hand/refurbished Thinkpads isn't that great. I was also wondering if it is THAT bad to purchase a brand new (of course at the lowest price I can find)?

My budget is around 650 euros (700 is my absolute max). Preferably a Thinkpad with an SSD and 1080p IPS screen (or is that too much to ask for with my budget? ;__;)

I'm sorry, but I'm not very tech-savvy, so please don't use too much /g/ lingoo. I plan on using Windows 7 if it is installed on the Thinkpad already, but I'm also satisfied with W8/8.1.

Thank you very much!

Nigga, every freshman Informatica at the UvA uses Linux. Unless ofcourse you're going to a Hogeschool (but even then I recommend Linux)

Go for a T420 or maybe a T530 if you really need the horsepower, even with the highest specs and 1080p monitor that's within your budget.
Don't expect to play vidya on any thinkpad since that's not what they're made for.
You can get a T420s for roughly €250 at gebruikt.com - it's where I bought mine. Excellent service and support

>>
>>54672856
Thank you for the first non-shitpost.
I'm going to a Hogeschool (Haagse), but I'm not tech-savvy so I have no idea about Linux, how to use it, etc. I'll feel like a wannabe if I use Linux/deviates of Linux if I barely know to use it, that's why I better stick with Windows. And ICT =/= Compsci, though I didn't know the word for it in English so I said Compsci.

Thanks though, I'll have a look around. With my budget, is a thinkpad the best option or are there better alternatives?

Well duh, it doesn't have one. It's not really that uncommon.

But anyway, you shouldn't use it anyway. I thought it was neat at first, but now I've disabled it on all of my thinkpads - that's what I'd like to say, but it doesn't fucking work for me. Disabling it in BIOS does absolutely nothing, still works..

Got my T420 Dock today, works surprisingly well with dual 2560x1440p monitors hooked up. Obviously the main laptop display stops working when using two external monitors, but the resolution gained for web browsing is amazing.
>>
>>54672942
Get a machine that dualboots then
Start with something simple like mint (i study art history and know how to use it) then gradually upgrade to gentoo
I think a thinkpad with an i7 and a ssd and 8gb of ram will be all you need the next 4-5 years

There is even a technet article on it if you care to look further into it.

Hey /g/.

What's the most I should pay for a T500 in Canuck land? I was looking at one, but it's 160, and has the lowest screen resolution.

Part of me thinks I should wait, but for some reason Thinkpads have almost seemed to go up in price. Or at least, they haven't gone down for about 4 years.

I'll just be using it for general browsing/writing/cartoons.

They're also super bulky and uncomfortable to hold. Build quality is great though, and specs are beast.

T420 has a cpu that can be upgraded, while it's soldered to the board on the T420s other than that, the slimness is the only difference.
>>
>>54677677
there are some other differences

IIRC you can get an aux battery or HDD to put into the optical drive slot of the T420s, but not the T420
>>
>>54677677

How does the X220/T420 handle H.265/VP9?
>>
>>54677465
>>54677663
The auctions with no OS included usually are the best bang for your buck, although auctions ending at strange/late hours can also be good. You should be able to easily snag a T420 or a X220 within your budget and still have a little left over for upgrading ram/hdd.

Generally if you see something on newegg, you can get it on ebay for cheaper. Look at x220 on each site as an example.
>>
>>54677677
T420s has one USB3.0 and two USB2.0. T420 has 4 USB2.0, one an eSATA combo port. And, yes, the T420s is slimmer. Battery life suffers because of that.

Hey /tpg/ I need your advice,
I recently got ahold of a thinkpad x300 for a sweet deal of 20$.
So I'm considering either to keep it or to just turn it around and sell it for a profit.
But the problem is, is it worth it? It needs a 1.8" ssd (msata to 1.8" adapter) a battery and definitely more ram.
So that's; 35$ 64gb ssd; 19$ battery 6cell (only 2 hours??); and 15$ 4gbs ram (why the fuck are the 8gb kits 100$) and a total of 69$
But is it really worth it when it cant even play 720p60. What if I try out the overclock mod? Seems sketchy and it's in german. You use a modded bios and solder a connection on the mobo. Seems worth a try with the performance gain. it if http://thinkwiki.de/X300#.C3.9Cbertakten_der_CPU_mittels_Pinmod

Yeah it's listed in an order of preference.
The x220 & t420 seem to be the most commonly recommended models. The x220 is my first option as the screen can be upgraded to IPS and it's quite lightweight.
The t420 has a better vertical resolution, with a larger screen but it's a little bulkier.
The x230 seems to have several build issues along with the homo keyboard.
I'm planning to upgrade whatever I get so I just want something that won't die on within in a year.
If I weren't a poorfag, I'd just get a mac.
>>
>>54680198
it's fine. Autists complain about it all the time, despiting the fact it's far better.
>>
>>54680348
The issue with the keyboard is mostly that Lenovo keeps fucking changing the layout. Thinkpads had used the same 7-row layout since the original 700C in 1993.

Also, I have to say I see a *ton* of keyboard failures in year-old x30 and x40 era machines. The keyboards would always get slightly glitchy after a while, but on older models it was after five or six years. I've had X230s where I've had to put two new keyboards on it every year, and probably 25% of the new keyboards I'm getting to replace them also have faults out of the shrinkwrap.

I disabled the Turbo mode on my X220 and the CPU never overheats, no matter what I do. May temperature is around 80°C. Can still do everything I need with it, including a bit of occasional gayming. Turn the turbo mode on and the CPU reaches 95°C sometimes and throttles.

If you have a custom BIOS with advanced settings installed, you can limit the CPUs power consumption, essentially lowering the temperature while keeping the performance almost about the same.

Windows 7 if you have to, or whatever Linux you want if you wanna go that route.

The chiclet keyboard is not bad, it's personal preference. I still prefer the older keys, but lenovo makes the best chiclet keys i've ever used. The problem with the newer keyboard is the layout, they straight out removed some functions and made the layout feel like a "laptop", while the old layout resembles a traditional keyboard. Look up side by side comparisons.

We should only add those if someone finds a decent tutorial on how to replace the keyboard with a *20 one.
Their battery life and heat management is considerably better indeed and they're not too expensive.
Though, when I bought my ThinkPad (T420s) I didn't just look at OP's recommendation. I lurked, read the wiki and asked a lot of questions before I made my decision. I think we shouldn't list any recommended models at all to make people think more for themselves about their decision.

Are you trolling? Are you seriously fucking trolling?

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Install_Classic_Keyboard_on_xx30_Series_ThinkPads

It's seriously the first fucking search result you dipshit. It even provides the links to the BIOS patch and FUCKING TELLS YOU HOW TO APPLY IT.

10/10 great fucking bait you cunt.

LUI? Don't you mean CLI?
>>
>>54683001
I meant the line user interface. I assume the CLI is the command line interface? Basically, get used to using command lines to do shit, like in DOS.

If you don't like Ubuntu you should try Mint. That's what I'm using (with the Xfce DE)
>>

I didn't bother to look it up since I have no need of it. I'm glad it's there. Let's add it to the OP then.
Is this seriously something to get so mad about?

Is it possible to replace x220i (i3) mobo with one of x220 (i5/i7)?

Nobody uses LUI term.
>Basically, get used to using command lines to do shit, like in DOS.
You can, just open up the terminal and learn online basic commands (navigating directories, copying files, etc...) and just play around.
>>
>>54683398
Do the same basic commands work on other linux versions too?

How long did it take you to get used to the trackpoint? I've never used one before
>>
>>54683467
Yeah it's all the same, they all use the GNU coreutils
>>
>>54683161
yes

one day.
You'll find it amazing when playing FPS games on your thinkpad.
>>
>>54683544

Turn off the trackpad for a day and only use the trackpoint. Then you'll wonder how you ever used a laptop without one.

>If they're going to use SpyOS, they should use the latest version of SpyOS that has the newest UI and features and performance.
>There's no point using W7/8.1 anymore.
This so much

An additional benefit of this is that no normie will ever understand how to use your computer. They'll try the touchpad, then give up when it doesn't work.

It's possible to swap out CPUs on the t430, right? What's a good one to replace the i5 version with? I was thinking of throwing an i7 3632qm, unless there's something arguably better I could put in there.
