My guess is memory compression. Android got a good boost in performance when it got memory compression, and Phoronix benchmarked some notable improvements when (I think) Mesa landed compression. Given the track record of the technology, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Nvidia did this to "cheat" more memory and higher bandwidth.
