Its worse than the G5 already. I was so excited for it but the coolest thing about the Ara now is you might get to slap a tiny e-ink display on the back of your phone. I feel like that would just end up becoming a clock/weather widget placeholder though, not of great use.

>>54657436

You essentially are buying a new phone, save for the camera and maybe speaker/s. In fact the phone will run if you remove every single add-on. That's a bad sign for a diy flexible phone.

So they permanently affixed the only two parts of the phone that anyone would actually care to swap out. Real fuckin neato.

One bit of good news: the battery is swappable.

http://www.theverge.com/google/2016/5/20/11723508/google-project-ara-modular-phone-photos-io-2016
>The battery on this prototype is hot swappable, too. Yup! Caramago opened up the bottom, pulled out the battery, and there was enough juice in the frame to just keep the phone running. It probably wouldn't last very long, but definitely long enough to put in a fresh battery, all without rebooting.

Still, fuck 'em for making the screen unswappable.

Honestly I am not surprised this is the direction they took. The concept as neat as it was had no way of succeeding in a market where companies and part manufactures make profit on selling in bulk to phone manufactures. It would stand to LOSE profit if they went the route of ARA and made special modules which could be upgradable each year. The amount of production vs product sold would always be substantially lower.

Plus they would have been smoking crack if they were expecting in getting companies like Samsung, HTC, Sony, and Qualcomm to join in on making ARA modules.

ARA is a device that was always going to be met with compromise in the consumer market. It was never going to be the dream device so many people hoped it would become. Just a gimmicky pile of forgettable shit.

When they mean display they mean second displays, such as the E-Ink module display pictured here.

>>54677071 Is correct unfortunately. The main screen is part of the frame now. ARA has less become the "perfect upgradable modular smartphone" and instead become more "the ultimate gimmicky modular phone of useless features".

Don't be daft, Anon. They wouldn't go through the trouble if making an open standard and then not adhere to it themselves. Not to mention that with third party modules, which Google promotes, there would be little profit in people purchasing new ones anyway.

<--

>>54679211
The frame has all the expensive parts in it, though. They should've at least made the screen swappable. (That also would've enabled different front buttons/keyboards, or a keyboard under a slider screen.)
>>
>>54680671
>They should've at least made the screen swappable.
I wish this was the case, too. Then it'd be basically the same as the previous version except with SoC embedded in the endoskeleton, which would still be really nice. I can see how this is more feasible, though, and it should within all reason be possible for third parties to make their own frames. Here's hoping Google doesn't go full retard, preventing others from doing so.
