Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

What's the most battery friendly distribution that isn't too hard to install/use?

I'm currently using Arch Linux with Xfce and the latest build of Firefox Nightly, and whenever I go to save an image, choose a name, and then save it the file downloads but Firefox crashes. This also occurred with the version of Firefox in the extra repository. I honestly have no clue why this is happened and I'm not 100% sure if this was a issue when I first installed Arch due to not have saved many images in recent time. Anyone know what is causing this?

Complete linux noob here.
I'm currently running mint and when I initially installed it I opted to encrypt the hard drive, but I want to unencrypt it now. Is there any way for me to do this?
Also, more importantly, is there an easy way for me to completely reset my Mint install or will I have to boot from a live usb and reinstall it that way?

Does anyone have a Samsung ATIV Tab 3?

It's a really shitty tab that doesn't even have actual windows 10 drivers. You have to install the 8.1 drivers for that. It's an UEFI 32 bit tablet with clover trail.

Windows is unsurprisingly kinda slow on it, with the only good thing being that it has a wacom digitizer which is supported there. Ideally this tablet would be pretty fine if it was actually any fast.

Any linux distro out there that supports weird shit like this tablet? I tried Debian and Ubuntu and so far the only thing I've been able to do is reach the bootloader, but after selecting any option it does nothing.

Hola /fglt/

I am learning C but my main OS is Windows and Windows ain't all that great for programming in C.

I would like to dual boot a Linux distro but I don't really like the ones I have tried which are all the main Ubuntu flavours (Gnome, KDE, Xfce).

Tbh I would be ok with a simple super lightweight WM like Openbox but when I installed it on my Ubuntu it looked like shit with screen tearing moving windows around, watching videos, etc.

Also I would like something with a few more options like window snapping to the left and right or the corners for easy window arrangement.

What is my best options? I figure I can just install Ubuntu for a stable base that "just works" and then use a better WM and compositor but I don't really know anything about WM and compositors so I am kind of lost while looking around. I saw something about Compton, can that work with Openbox or similar?

Why are companies usually so late or not interested at all in developing Linux drivers for their products? Is it the small size of the market or is it developing and maintaining them for Linux hard?

>>
>>54658428
Who cares, there will always be free alternatives for their non-free drivers anyway.
>>
>>54658242
Openbox should work ok, but adding a compositing manager like Compton can fix you that tearing problem.

Apart from Compton there is Xcompmgr, which Compton is derived. Look into their documentation for screen tearing.

For the window "snapping", try Skippy-XD, or "Brightside" http://www.webupd8.org/2011/04/set-up-hot-corners-edge-flipping-in.html

Maybe try a tiling wm?
>>
>>54658428
>Is it the small size of the market or is it developing and maintaining them for Linux hard?
Exactly.
If it's a consumer-grade product the chances that someone will use it with Linux is too minimal to even consider.

the name 'linux' was a mistake in the sense that it was uploaded to an ftp server but linus didn't provide a name, ergo linux, instead of freax that linus had pinned on calling it

thank fuck for that mistake, otherwise winbabies would be calling people gnu/freaxs :^)

>>54658674

the stance he's arguing from is that installing gnu/linux used to be a very daunting task especially for new comers, it's still the biggest barrier to entry despite being as intuitive as window et al for the past decade or longer
>>
>>54658631 (you)

cinnamon looks like windows in many ways. You can customize a lot of things and it is pretty minimalistic if you want. You can easily install themes, modify how things works, ther window arragement works as you want etc.
Now it's an advice if you don't want to spend too many time dealing with a WM or anything else.
You can always install it and try it, it won't take you many time

I can't open the webm but make sure you have group read/execute permissions also

it may also display that if the directory it's in doesn't belong to you I can't say

>>54658800
>how different would the fingerprint be?

make a gpg key, sign any random file, start comparing

gpg is mathematically secure, ergo at worse they may be similar but not identical (extremely rare) or completely different

>>54658830
>Is slackware difficult to get into

no

>and understand?

depends on how much you already know about gnu/linux operating systems and what you want to learn, but again, no

I wouldn't recommend it if it's your first or even second distro however

So it does that if I only have the read permission and not the write or execute? (the file's mode is 444 and it belongs to me and me login group.)

Thanks, sorry if I come off as paranoid. Even if the GPG matches and the hashes matches, I still worry if the ISO has been tampered with or if the ISO is really a fake because the NSA or some other group is after me.

git-annex uses git for metadata not for storing files, it's pretty clever actually since it stores history in a git log and you can track changes.
IIRC there is a git-annex android client, it's not that straightforward, but it matches your reqs.
It also supports 3rd party remote servers.

How do I rebind keys in Arch? For example, rebinding caps lock to scroll lock or something equally useless? At first I tried
$ xmodmap -e 'keycode 66'

Hey /fglt/ I would like to know which GNU/Linux distro has the lowest amount of graphics driver issues.
My research points out to Ubuntu but I hate how laggy it is sometimes.
Doesn't most of Ubuntu's packages come from Debian? I want to stick with Debian because It's highly recommended by my EE teacher and that's what I'm already using on my test VMs.
I'm planning on using a NVIDIA GPU and if I need anything that I can't get done with Wine QEMU + GPU passtrough.

Actually now that you mention it, I've been using OpenSUSE Tumbleweed for a few weeks and I still don't really know what the hell KDE is actually doing for me other than managing windows. I love Krunner (I installed Launchy shortly before converting to the church of Freedomâ„¢, and I'm hooked on the virtual desktops, but everything in KDE just seems to be individual modules that I can't see why couldn't just be manually cherry-picked apart from less interoperability testing
>>
>>54658527
well, yeah
Developing the drivers takes time, time is money, and GNU/Linux users are used to getting shat on, and probably wouldn't use proprietary drivers anyway.
Although I wonder why any drivers are proprietary in the first place. What, does NVidia just not want any competitor (lol) to know what they're doing? It's not like they actually earn money off drivers (directly, at least, from what I can see, though admittedly I know next to nothing about that)

netinstall does the install over a network. There are CDs which contain the packages like KDE, LXDE, XFCE, etc and you don't need internet. Any of the CDs you pick you can choose to do a minimal install that boots into a terminal.

There's ubuntuusers.de for germanfags tho.
>>
>>54660661
You're asking the wrong question.

The actual question you should ask yourself is: "What's the point of switching to GNU/Linux when I install the same freedom-denying programs I was using on Windows?"
>>
>>54662662
The only (non negligible) performance loss is due to the CPU being split between two OSs. Each OS gets half of my i5, so each has 2 physical cores (a total of 4 logical cores each). I have a dedicated SSD that I pass through so that I don't have to worry about any performance losses there, and so that if I wanted to, I could boot into it naively if I want full performance and use the whole CPU.

Last week I tried playing a game in GNU/Linux as my friend played a game in Windows. It worked very well. If I had not told him, he probably would have thought that it was a second computer. The only hiccup I had was that I had 8GB of ram allocated to my VM, and I had a lot of stuff open in GNU/Linux, so I maxed out my 16GB. That is why I lowered the VM RAM to 6GB. I didn't have a swap partition, because I thought that it would not be needed with 16GB of ram, so it got a bit buggy there, but that was my fault.

I followed this guide mainly:
