What's down?

ADSL network definitely up as I can tell you get rekt right now.
Couldn't give a rats tossbag about the rest.

TW ADSL network is fine.
Telstra core routing broken again.

I wonder who they purchased their core routers from?
They're certainly going to get a serve - I hope it's shitsco.

>Telstra core routing broken
Do I just have to wait to get it fixed?

I somehow have unlimited data. It's been like this for several months
>>
Does Australia really only have DSL/ADSL? Why?
>>

My maximum internet speed is 800 kb/s
>>
>>54646146
Reset your modem every ~45 mins
Sometimes the session might break even once the outage is resolved.

Other than that, nothing you can do but wait.

>>54646260
Telstra customers put up with it, keep in mind this isn't USA - if you have a phone line and get ADSL you can choose from ANY service provider - no one but Tesltra Cable customers are locked in.
>And soon Telstra's HFC network will be art of the NBN, so other ISPs will be able to provide services over it.

I pay $39.99 per month for unlimited naked ADSL2+, port is upto 24mbps, my line only gets to 18mbps.

It was supposed to be cable rolling out everywhere back when it was first being installed but then the government thought it wasn't worth it and went with cheaper adsl.

Then there were plans to install fibre everywhere with 100/40 speeds, but then due to leadership swaps twice within 2 years, everyone voted for the other party who fucked everything up wasted money and got nowhere, so now we're just kinda stuck
>>
>>54646340
Are the IPs on that thing sticky?
Recently I've found it difficult to reset IPs even on ADSL.
>>
>>54646369
me too
i've had to actually wait out my bans
>>
>>54646375
I'm on ADSL. The last time I got banned I had to turn it off overnight but I got a new one the next morning.

Turning the modem off and on like I used to do with my old modem didn't work at all.

We have a mix of technologies but there it's very different to how USA does things.

The POTS telephone network was paid for by the taxpayer back when Telstra was just another arm of the Department of the Postmaster General - so over time the privatised Tesltra had to allow wholesale access to POTS because we paid for it.

This allowed for a bunch of ISPs to put their own DSL hardware inside Tesltra's exchanges and built up our current mass use of ADSL.

Well before ADSL even hit Australia, Telstra and Optus were rolling out cable, but some environuts and general whingy old people complained that the extra cable being strung from power lines was 'unsightly' - a few Councils (local government, akin to your gazetted city governments) withdrew their permission to roll out the cable (even though they didn't own the poles...) which would have made the network a patchwork infeasible mess - so they both shitcanned it
Cable still got rolled out, but only underground and typically only in greenfields developments at the time (or anywhere there might be otherwise easy access to underground conduit and pits)
Thus Cable never took a major hold here.

For the euros, we did get into ISDN in the 80s but it was too expensive and too much a 'solution in the search of a problem' also it's still readily called 'It Still Does Nothing'

Omni Wireless is a shitshow.
Fixed point consumer wireless is a shitshow
Fixed point Microwave is only for backhaul or TV trucks.
Fibre is a patchwork slight rollout for NBN, otherwise there is available service in capitals cities for businesses outside of NBN.
>>
>>54646394
I can only get cable in my area, sadly
>>
>>54646369
>>54646375
>>54646384
That's up to your ISP, not the technology.

If you have a static ip you're stuck with it.
If you have a dynamic IP, it depends on how long the lease time is and how long until a lease on a terminated session expires.
>>
>>54646260
I pay $60 for unlimited, but it's only ADSL2+.
>>
>>54646482
So the best bet to get a new IP would be to set the lease time to the absolute minimum, turn the modem off, wait the amount of time until it expires and turn it back on?
>>
>>54646473
Don't be sad, if you're Telstra or Optus HFC you'll be NBN soon.
If you were TransACT/Neighborhood cable you should already be NBN.
>>
>>54646260
You can presently get 1000GB of data for $99 a month with telstra.

But its a 24 month contract.
>>
$69 here in NZ for unlimited 100/50 fibre
>>
>>54646501
The lease time is set on the ISPs end, anything you're changing on your end is the lease time for local IPs from the DHCP server on your router/modem.

>>54646545
1000GB being 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (not 1,073,741,824,000 bytes)
Also both downloads AND uploads count toward the cap.

>aussies thinking fibre is for their shitty 10/5 plans
>mfw sitting with uncapped 120/60 by cable in europe
>>
>>54646736
A majority of people on NBN fibre are on the 100/40 plan m8.

Really the only people that aren't are older people who don't think they need it, some won't, some are wising up with the rise of streaming services and a lack of bandwidth for them.

I'll be on 100/40 VDSL2 in a few months.
>>
>>54646260
It's Telstra, they cater more for business and just try to jew as much out of residential customers as possible.

No internet is "uncapped". I'm sick of this thrown around by providers like it means something.

Your provider pays for the backhaul it needs to provide an adequate service for all it's subscribers. This is significantly less than the sum of all it's customer's maximum download speed. If you were all downloading like crazy 24/7 your ISP's network would crawl to a halt.

Unlimited means literally nothing in the world of the internet. Unless you're one of the poor ausfags that gets jewed for anything less than a terabyte.
>>
>>54646838
>In the capital
We're aiming this a 99% of the Australian population mate, not just a few cunts in the capital cities.

>>54646884
Pretty much this.
I'd argue that anyone on less than 1TB DOWN (uncapped or separately binned upstream) is cuckimus maximus.
>Unless it's some Grandma who only checks her emails and buys embroidery shit online, she probably doesn't give a shit as long as it works and doesn't break the bank.

4K Streaming.
>bbbut muh TV
7mhz DVB-T only allows ~22mbps per multiplex and most of that is going to 3-4mbps MPEG2 streams for bullshit compatability reasons - we're only just getting H.264 on broadcast and we likely won't have anything 4K for years yet until the MPEG2 stuff is gone and we can use the bandwidth for 4K H.265
>muh Foxtel?
Go fuck yourself Rupert.

A decent 4K stream should be ~30mbps, that's ~13.5GB per hour.
We were already doing shitty 1080i 12mbps MPEG2 for HD DTV, that's already 5.4GB over DVB-T, we're just changing the transmission type and making it possible for infinitely more channels to exist.

1TB is nothing, we're not talking about SAVING 1TB, we're talking about transmitting 1TB of data - 6 multiplex DVB-T (ABC, SBS, 7, 9, 10 and CTV/44 = 6 multiplexes) at full 22mbps is 1.3TB per 24 hours...
