Can I still oc an i3?
Is it worth it or should I just buy a 6600k instead? How much better than an i7 870 will it be?
Don't buy K if they still don't have VT-D. Over clocking isn't really important, but 64bit VMs are.

The i3 is pretty good though, and much cheaper. At stock it's about as fast as an i5 6400, so if I can oc it, I might get that instead.

G4400 + 380 will play games at lowered settings 60fps for around $225 together. G4400 is $49.99 at microcenter

You may still be able to over clock the skylake i3. Since it is locked you will have to baseclock overclock it. This is trickier than otherwise; namely it disables temp monitoring and integrated gfx so you will need a cooler and a dedicated gpu. You will also need of course a z170 board (rather than cheaper h170) and certain bios version. This may also be disabled permanently by microcode updates slipped in by windows update for instance.
I don't recommend the pentium. The pentium + cooler will cost nearly as much as a i3-6100, anyway. The i3 alone is great for non-gaming, and it runs tf2 at 150 fps+ with gfx config and dx8. It also kills dwarf fortress since it requires ddr4 ram. I recommend getting a H/Z170 Board with new intel for future proofing. You can get the i3 and possibly overclock and then you're set for a 6700k or whatever when you have the dosh

I got an ASrock for like 80 after rebate. I would guess a budget H170 board would be about 60-70, maybe even 50. Honestly man, I bought this set up with the intention of OC the i3 and then later switching to a skylake i5 when I have the money, but I have still not overclocked it. Im past the RMA and I don't really know shit about OC so I really dont want to risk it. I'm not a gamer in the conventional sense, tf2 and DF are the only games I will ever play, perhaps a little reflex/quake live and cs. For these non intensie games (which I always minimize gfx for) an i3 alone suits my needs and I demand at least 144 fps. With a dedicated gfx card its overkill and the i3 isn't completely terrible for newer games too. I think games like gta5 and battlefield are totally out of the question. Consider that if you are thinking about the i3-6100.

continuing, I think that most applications besides games are not programmed for multi threading, so architecture and clock speed are the determining factors. The skylake is 3.7, which is pretty dang high for a chip areound 125 dollars.

The i3 and all AMD CPUs aren't as good, that's why they are cheaper.
You can overclock the shit out of things but now you are spending money you should have spent on the CPU (which effects everything you do) on cooling the thing just so it can perform like the CPU you should have just bought in the first place.

I agree with this guy, now that im thinking more. If you want to play new releases/ any game at 60 fps 1080p then you should suck it up and get an i5. Im not even sure if you need to shill out for the K version, since it might still perform well enough and again with an overclock you need cooling (+$30 at least).
However, if you only play to play non intensive games like tf2, DF, CS, Dota, LoL, quake live, etc then the i3 is just fine and you can easily save $120 with an i3 and you dont even need a Z170 board.

You can't overclock non K chips and you need a z motherboard to go with it. It's probably not worth it if you already have a first generation i7, especially if it's overclocked. Give it another generation or buy a used last gen setup, full price is way to expensive for the meager upgrade it provides.

Other way around. You can only change the BCLK, and even then only by 5 Mhz or so. There were ways to overclock non K chips but those are gone because intel said no.
