Let's have a college/university/secondary education thread for all of us /g/ students.
Post your college, shitpost about it/others, give advice, etc.

I'm expecting /g/ to make fun of me for going to U of H for Electrical Engineering, but whatever.

EE, Uni of Montenegro

The only advice I can give you, study often and long, or you'll end up like me. I passed about 1.5-2 years worth of courses in the last 4 years, I'm 23 and got a nice deeeeep depression going on for me. Procrastination could very well be the only true deadly sin.

Future comp sci single honors reporting in. Hoping to go into academia, any tips?
>>
>>54642556
I've got something like 20 friends that go there. At the very best I have heard neutral things about it. Most people have pretty horrible things to say about the professors and the school in general. Only content ones are the ones who already have jobs basically lined up and just need the degree for the sake of it.
>>
>>54642573
unless you're going to a top tier uni (ivy league) prepare to be unstimulated, intellectually. CS courses are dumbed down quite a bit, as it's a cash cow for the education business, and can't be a cash cow if most students fail the first semester.

it might pick up in your junior and senior years, but the biggest problem you'll have to face is being evaluated against normies with no programming experience
>>
>>54642601
100% accurate at lower levels.

If you can make it past year 2 things get a bit better, but it's good enough for me and lets me live at home so I'm good.
>>
>>54642621
I'm not american, Im going to a decent tier uni (top 30) in the UK. Going since its close, it apparently doesnt matter for undergrad, and I wasnt all that keen on the arrogance of the russel group students.

I don't know where you go to school, but it might have an EE degree with a focus is semiconductors. If you are interested in the underlying hardware, it's really very interesting. MOSFETs, BJTs, graduate-level quantum mechanics classes, fabrication (you might even have a fablab), ect. Pretty hot area right now especially with graphene/CNTs/PCM ect.

>>
>>54647053

Indiana here also, really depends on what you are trying to do.

> Purdue
If you are interested in CS I would suggest not doing it there, but if you are interested more in the EE side of things or engineering in general, definitely go there.

>IU
If you are interested in CS or Mathematics definitely go here, you will be taught by some of the greats, and half of the undergrad classes use scheme and other functional programming taught by people who wrote some of the classic Scheme books. You literally could not do better than doing CS at IU.

>Ball State
If you are trying to get a discount education and don't feel comfortable in your abilities, go here and you will get an OK education. You will get a quality degree, but you aren't going to come out of it prepared for academia or grad school level CS/Tech stuff from your undergrad there. They just teach you java and code monkey crap.

Alright, that seems like some decent insight, thanks man. Considering I'm unsure at the moment it definitely helps me to eliminate one of my real choices (Ball State in this case). I also have the misfortune of going from Ivy Tech to one of these so I have a feeling it's gonna be a bitch, but I've fucked around enough to know it's what I want and that it'll take work to do.

yeah i know. we just have a chip on our shoulder though because we're so close to bigger, more prestigious places (like USC) that even the supermarket nearest us stocks USC gear (not kidding, it's all tri-point flags and shit for USC and we're literally a 5 minute walk away).

admittedly that's because we don't have a football team, but it makes it seem like we're so inconsequential (even in scholarship) that we don't register in the minds of people literally across the street.

Anyway, shits fun, (altough the bachelors was hard as balls) especially going into the master of Complex Systems. Pretty much guaranteed to get a job, the problem is finding a GOOD job.

Should I bother going to uni at the age of 26?
Been working so far on stuff not related to technology.
Still living with parents which is why I was able to acquire so much money, and I should be able to pay for university on my own just from the saved money.

Or should I just go learn a trade?
>>
Seriously not a single math major? Fucking plebs
>>

And do what? Any job I want? 300k starting? Math is a meme and it boggles my mind that people put up with it beyond what's necessary.
>>
>>54655926
Math major here...
>>
I don't really expect an answer, I'm just thinking through shit. I wouldn't mind opinions though.

So, I applied to Purdue University as a transfer. My application was declined because I didn't have actual college credit for Calculus as required. I took a College Algebra class and AP Calc BC 4 years ago in HS and Linear Algebra after graduating, but I never took the AP test (Academic team stuff, studying for SAT IIs for classes I never took, research project, summer community college etc)

I'm horrifically rusty, and I've hit a bit of a career wall in that I lack a proper math backing to apply to my programming. I'm trying to move up from my lowly $60k/year webdev/help desk support/programmer/network manager/generalist bastard of a job I'm in now. However, I don't have any confidence in my math skills to apply as a proper software engineer. It's not that I couldn't do it and learn, it's just that I've always been the type to absolutely kill it and moving on with companies begging for me to stay. I never want to be the guy who is fumbling around completely lost, or implementing shitty solutions to problems that have a better solution.

For instance, at my current job (not exactly point-of-sale, but similar), I started as an extra techie hand, pulling cable, running out for service calls, taking the occasional tech-support call. Within 4 months, I was given complete access to the entirety of our systems in my state. By 8 months, I was promoted again above the two college educated more experienced techs I worked with after coming up with a few solutions that cut our service calls nationwide from ~400/month to under 100/month, as well as a more robust remote deployment system that worked with our system. Going to continue, in another post because rambling.

>>54656268
Continuing..
Within a year, my pay had doubled, and I moved from pulling cable to maintaining our state's website, keeping our state's servers online, deploying techs as needed, managing the state's network of terminals, working directly with the dev team to implement changes and solutions, fixing problems that our techs couldn't, hiring and firing as needed, working with the sales teams and distributors to follow and scout leads and to ensure all ~50 state locations were taken care of. My boss moved on, and I have everything but his title after less than two years with only a year of electronics repair experience, and some temp odds jobs as former experience.

But this just isn't my shit. The further I go up, the more I keep having to deal with people and the less I get to do what I'm actually good at: identifying tech related problems, implement solutions to fix said problems, and creating new things to make either my life or my customer's lives easier. At my current path, I'll end up doing nothing but managing people and paperwork, and making low six-figures in my 40s for the rest of my life.

It's not impossible but most the people higher up i've seen at multiple places I've worked have at least an associates except for maybe a handful.

>>
>>54656589

>>54656412
Right now, I simply don't have the time, 60+ hour weeks every week, working 6-7 days of the week is average. Even at home, I'm constantly on the phone or working remotely because this state will fail without me. There simply isn't the market here. That's the reason my boss left. Even after three of our four major competitors pulling out, he couldn't keep us in the black. Even now, with me wearing way too fucking many hats, working myself to death , we're barely able to keep the doors open. Hiring more help isn't really an option money-wise, I can't spare any more tech time because they're not really keeping up as is (we literally have sales people and distributors helping run lines at new locations and I'm constantly having to call in favors from them because we can't get anyone out to a location for days, which would cost us thousands). I'm completely fucking exhausted, and I simply can't add anything else or work like this any more.

I don't want to be back in the position I'm in now. I don't want to continue along this career path of "working with tech -> working with tech and people -> working with people who work with tech". I see how that ends up. It's what happened with my Dad. He, just like me, absolutely loved his job, but the only way to not stagnate your career is to go up. Up until you're out of your skill set, overworked, and hate waking up in the morning because your job is the exact opposite of what you're good at and enjoy. I'm not as savy as he is though, nor is there a market for what he did. I can't get millions in contracts in my name so I can do whatever I want with my own company.

Dammit to fucking hell, continuing again...

College just to take some refresher classes.
>>
>>54657056

>>54656412
Honestly, I just need a break from it all.
However, that's not something I want to explain when I'm looking for another job. "I worked too much, so I quit and really studied hard with these books and websites for a year or two". At least with Uni, I have a paper saying that I wasn't just sitting on my ass for the next two years. I have an excuse of why I started working part time or consulting "I felt like I could be a more valuable asset with more education". Which really isn't an excuse at all, but now I have a ~$30k piece of paper that backs me up.

I didn't mean to say that I don't use those resources, I absolutely do, and will continue to. Even if in the last two years or so, I've had less and less time dedicate to educate myself. No doubt I'll be able to use them more, and get more out of them when it's something I can apply every day, with guidance. It's just that I've always felt that no matter what I learn for them, there's gaps. Not gaps of "I don't know how to do this", but gaps of "I'm doing it this way, because I'm oblivious that an alternative exists". If I want to kill it as a dev/soft engi/whatever like I know I'm capable of, I can't do that shit. I want to be confident that I know and am taught as thoroughly as possibly. There's no reason to come up with something that some Victor Vanderbilt can do better just because he had someone smarter and more experienced than I tell it to him last year while he was at Uni. I'm too damn competitive and my ego is way too fucking huge to lose because I didn't take the opportunity to better myself as much as I possibly can. If I do everything I can, and people still better me then, that's fine. I gave it my best and that's all I have. I know I'm not the best at anything in the world. But fuck being worse than I could be. Fuck missing opportunities and losing out because I wanted to save a little money or get back to work a little faster. Fuck not reaching my full God damned potential.

Starting back at Calc 1 is probably best, just as a refresher mostly. Maybe see what all I can squeeze in, in the next 18 months or so. i don't understand this. if you enjoy CS and the field offers career options, go study that. i've never heard an interviewee tell me that they studied X because Y didn't seem like enough of a challenge, but it just sounds like peacocking.

if you don't enjoy CS, or the career options coming out of northeastern CS don't look good, then by all means do CE. but don't give me this self-aggrandizing horse shit about pursuing something principally because it's harder.

that being said, it sounds disturbingly like you don't even know what the CS curriculum involves, so you might not even be at this point in the decision tree yet. you might be at the infantile "it didn't look yummy so i wouldn't try it" broccoli-tier status of college majors. i really hope you get a chance to take courses in departments you wouldn't intuitively take.

I pretty much mentored my girlfriend through her first year of CS and if I took the same classes I'd literally sleep through every lecture.
I'm hoping to learn a bunch of new things in CE and maybe take CS and add it to the major / switch altogether if I find that to be a better option. Do you know if they overlap a lot?

>I don't want to spend 4 years learning things I already know / could learn in a month / aren't going to actually apply in a job
if your undergraduate CS curriculum satisfies any of these, then your department's reputation would be garbage and your job prospects would be nil, satisfying the latter case of
>[if... ] career options coming out of northeastern CS don't look good

Look at the curricula for each program. Study what you like. Explore shit. Every condescending faggot I've ever met has turned out to be like you + 4 years, where they decided that they would do something because it was hard but not because they liked it or anything intrinsic, and they decided that their whole identity would be based on the false belief that they're better than everyone else.

Those people are insufferable. Don't be those people. Go study something you like (provided that it's not worthless, like Women's Studies (or at least double major so you have something valuable coming out of college)) and let your own satisfaction drive you.

as for double majoring, the two schools of thought i generally see are people that cut corners (doing 2 similar fields) and doing 2 very different things. the people that do 2 very different things are always more interesting not just on paper, but in person. If you want to communicate depth, overlapping by double majoring in your undergrad in CE and CS won't accomplish that; get a masters or a PhD if you want to communicate real depth.
>>
>>54660017
LOL. I go here for CS btw. Lots of CE majors end up switching to CS after taking the intro classes because they're much more interesting and involved than the CE counterparts. In CS here you learn through a functional language and pick up concepts like induction and termination analysis quickly which will only better you as a programmer, even if you think you know it all. The dept as a whole has a 40% dropout rate as well, and I have friends who at the beginning thought they'll easily coast by only to fall because of how different functional programming is to newbs

Notre Dank reporting, English & Econ double major within the College of Arts and Letters...Here's what I have to offer: you don't need to be a business major to land a job on Wall Street. From what I understand, the most coveted spots on Wall Street are represented by an increasing number of Stats/Math/CompSci majors. Nonetheless, just because you don't major in Finance doesn't mean that you can't get that sweet ibanking gig at Goldman Sachs.
