So, my college is starting some extracurricular activities based on this thing.
Is it a meme or a is it a legit iniciative?

As someone who has tinkered with electronics and microcontrollers for a long time, it's genuinely a nice thing. The threshold for getting started is a lot lower.
As for my credentials, I own a STK500 and a STK600 development board as well as an Intel Galileo and three Arduino Unos (as well as a Raspberry Pi and a Cyclon II Altera FPGA)

shit be epic yo
Legit. The only limit is you.
It's basically the Visual Basic of the microcontroller world.
It's good for learning electronics and quick testing/prototyping, but ARM based mcus(STM32 F0 series for example) now cost basically the same as 8bit AVR and can do so much more, imho there's really not point learning AVR outside Arduino nowadays.

fuck 32bit and 8bit
why is it so hard to get 4bit mcus these days?
all you find are with otp, masked rom, etc.
Arduino is fine for blinking LEDs but otherwise it's a meme.
