But now I'm curious. I watched a documentary about an American who defected to the DPRK during the Korean war and he gets special treatment in the DPRK because he's an actor in their propaganda movies, usually playing the American imperialist. Communism/socialism is not banned. They use the term "Juche" to describe the state ideology because it basically means self reliance. But it was never intended to contradict socialism/communism. They just use Juche to mean "Marxism-Leninism as applied in North Korea". Article 82 of their constitution still says citizens are required to adhere to "the socialist standards of life". There are other references to socialism/communism still in their constitution and government propaganda.

Their own propaganda says they regard Marxism-Leninism as true. Their constitution is filled with rhetoric about workers owning the means of production and cooperative everything etc etc. They did not ban communism. They replaced the word communism with Juche in most instances BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE THEM TO BE THE SAME THING.
