TAGs stink. They're literally overpriced Edifices with automatic movements. I've handled a blue Aquaracer a few days ago, there was absolutely nothing special about it. It ticks all the boxes needed for a <1000€ watch, but otherwise it's an uninspired, 14-year old-tier ugly bore. Old Heuer was a million times better.

>>

No one would have cared if they'd just bought crate of Seiko ébauches, made TAG-Heuer rotors for them and put "Japan mov't" somewhere on the watch. But the lie they tried to pull was just embarrassing. Not that TAG will ever lose a stinking shekel over it, most TAG buyers are semi-wealthy plebs and normies anyway, they'll never hear about the scandal, many of them never heard of Seiko for that matter.
>>
>>54594752
And the damage control, it was hilarious.

>B-but we modified this movement so much it's ours, it has no longer the seiko spirit!

>new Mako II

Why is much better? I didn't know there was a Mako II.

I am currently wearing a Massimo Dutti Pilot Quartz watch. Could you recommend me a diver for less than 230€? Citizen and SKX have the hands too short for me. Vostok is really cringe. What other options I have?
>>
>>54594809
Great, finally someone with real world experience!
How does your TAG handle depths beyond 200m?
>>
>>54594733
>implying you're even going to take that thing diving

That's really not big achievement, plus that's not a divers watch to start with.

You got 150$ Citizen Promaster/Eco-drives that are rated for 300meters and exceed that rating. Even the Citizen NY0040 which is rated for 200meters was tested to function down to a depth 500meters.

I'd rather take a run of the mill Amphibia as a backup diving watch instead of a Tag.

>>54594817
The Orient Mako and Orient Ray are both good choices (Along with the newer Ray II and Mako II)

Overall they just got rid of the 2o'clock pusher and added hacking and handwinding, which are big bonus points for 190$ watches.

Though, what do you mean by Vostok is really cringe?

Fair enough, though the Amphibia line has inoffensive/non-commie dials. Komandirskie dials usually have that commie feel.

Hacking is when you pull the crown to set the time, and the seconds hand stops.

Alright, so you're a TAG owner who's assblasted over people shitting over your poorly chosen watch, and instead of coming to term with the fact that you've made a big mistake (you know, like an adult), you instead throw a tantrum calling others poorfags (basically an ad hominem) and questioning the value of their expertise by pretending to somehow be more qualified to an opinion (MUH TRIMIX MUH 300m DIVES) on TAG than a hivemind of wrist-fedora rainmen.

TL;DR: post your diving gear, maybe even an underwater shot, with or without you TAG. Until then you're just some mad asshole with buyers remorse in denial.

Sorry, missed the second half of last thread. Most likely cause of a misaligned day or date wheel is that someone tried to use the quick-set close to midnight, and the wheel what partially advanced by the time and then full advanced by the quick-set, causing the gear to slip a few teeth and end up misaligned.

If the quick-set mechanism worlds then it should be an easy fix for a watchmaker to reset the day wheel properly.

They are just another example of the decline of good brands.

Their older designs and models look far better than the current ones, and they used to make watches with decent movements as well.

Thanks for the tip m8, I'll be sure to let Shane know, because I'm now the proud owner of a Daini 7018. Can't believe how cheap it was compared to JewBay (although not as cheap as I was hoping to get it), hopefully the condition turns out to be good and the date mechanism works alright. If it isn't then I'll just track down some 7009. Shane should be able to figure out how to do a transplant since watches come as naturally to him as breathing. I guess this means that I'm going to be deferring my 52xx and "nice vintage Swiss" acquisitions some more.

As for the 5246, there is one that is basically in NOS condition. But it costs like 100,000 yen, which is way more than I would feel comfortable dropping on Yahoo Auctions.

Will a TAG still be shit if it's an homage to the old Heuers? This one actually looks good.
>>
>>54597122
I alnost feel ashamed to say that I would consider this. It's definitely one of the best looking things TAG has ever put out, but it's pathetic that they have to rely on the vintage designs from the old Heuer company to make a decent-looking watch. The movement also doesn't look that interesting, but I would have to do more research before coming to a conclusion. I don't like how they put the TAG logo on the movement.

For $5,000 you can also have a Springu Drivu, but it won't be a chronograph. However, I suspect the finishing will be better and the movement is certainly not ordinary at all.

I wish people would stop using this word with cut-and-dry factual statements. But nice 52 KS anyways.

Vintage Seikofags, something I've realized over the past few days is that, while most watchfags get hard over a lot of Suwa products, more or less everything they ever produced was either unexceptional or plagued with problems, and all their mechanical movements eventually became extinct. On the other hand, Daini's movements live on into the present day. The 7000 caliber eventually evolved into the 7S26 and the 6R15, while the 5200 caliber went on to live in high-end Seikos and Credors. So in the end, Suwa's contributions were mostly discarded but they get a lot of the credit for being "innovative", while Daini's stuff forms the basis of modern mechanical Seikos and everyone has more or less forgotten about them.

from what i've seen a lot of middle-aged men wear longines in my country (because you can get them from most boutiques)

on the fence of pic related, but wouldn't buy it in any case
>>
>>54597731

Well that's literally why all my vintage Seikos are Daini's.

The only caliber series I really would consider top tier from Suwa pre-1975 is the 62xx used in the Weekdater and 62GS.

I would consider the 45GS as the greatest pre-1975 GS model, and it was Daini produced. The 52xx is obviously superior to the 56xx, the 70xx to the 61xx, and the 51xx to the comparable Suwa calibers (that I don't remember).
>>
>>54598357
I believe UV LED's kinda creep into the visible wavelength. I guess this could be helpful in not burning your retinas out with invisible radiation through your dilated pupils when working with UV light.
>>
Maybe a stpid question but I have no idea about watches.

Are there some watches that can make a single beep sound every 30minutes? and can be turn off during the night? I'm rehabbing from an injury and need to exercise every 30 minutes.

Most digitals can be set to beep every hour, other than that you would probably have to set a timer. The G-Shock GW -56XX series has such a timer & is IMHO the best G-Shock anyway.

Funny enough, all of the Seiko's i've ever owned were either modern or vintage Daini's.

But your disdain from Suwa Seikosha's products is a tad bit too far.

I wouldn't mind owning either a 5601 or a 5621KS/GS since they are good movements and lack the Achilles heel of the 56XX cals, the 5740-800X as simple and robust highbeats, and i got the Weekdater enroute.

613X chronographs with their clutch issues are a bit no-no though.
>>
>>54598998
Another ETA/Swatch brand that's just a set of letters printed on the dial living off the onl glory. No independence whatsoever, they're targeted for consumers who can afford more than a Tissot but not an Omega (i.e. Longines is strategically never allowed by their masters to produce anything better than Omega).

>>54599180
Died and resurrected a few times, now belongs to a HK company, but supposedly it's the same Grenchen-based manufacturer it used to be. Has some alright-looking watches, some have Selita movements, some in-house.

They have a neat in-house movement, the cal. 39, which is supposedly a Mr. Potato Head movement, where you could outfit the basic handwound movement with all sort of drop-in modules, like automatic complication, calendar complication, chronograph module and so on.

Also they're not owned by Swatch.

>>
>>54599215
Actually, the 45 would be the only Daini caliber I can think of that has perennial problems. Snapping mainsprings destroying the cannon pinion... Not a great design feature. Suwa's 5740 was dead simple in comparison but it is probably my favourite caliber from them, and one of the few early Hi-Beats with no drama.

>>54599418
Holy fuck that is cheap. I now feel like I got ripped off on the 7018. The timekeeping is also exceptional. Thank fuck nobody knows about this movement, keeps the prices sane.

>>54599478
Suwa had some interesting stuff and they were often the first to do something (ie, first automatic chronograph). Daini seems to have sat back and thought about stuff a lot more, but there are some absolutely great Suwa products out there.

I really don't know what the fuck they were thinking with the 6139 and the 6138. The cases look great but that chronograph wheel is just such a fucking amateur, stupid design. Something that should have been fixed after the initial rush to beat the Swiss at their own game.

By the way, is it true that Seiko is thinking of modifying the 6R15 to create a chronograph movement? If so, it will effectively be the modern 701x.
>>
>>54599661

No clue on the 6R15 chronograph. Haven't heard one bit about any new Seiko atuo-chronographs except for a few new 8RXX based models like the SARK005.

But essentially if they will, it would be close to a 701X. The 6R15 has it's roots in the 7002/7005/7009 movements, which were the base for the 701X chronographs. However it depends on how Seiko will design the chronograph layer, which was the ingenious part about the 701X chronographs.

What was so good about the 701X's chronograph design? Genuinely curious because for the longest time I was thinking of buying a 6138 but now everyone says they're shit.

It would be fucking fantastic if Seiko just. did a modern reissue of the jumbo 6138 with an 8R movement that doesn't break. Do they have any idea how many watch autists would line up for that?

>>54600098
What made the 701X chronographs so good is that they were true flyback chronographs. You could press on the button to reset it without stopping the chronograph first, something the 613X seriescouldn't.

They chronograph layer was much more simple, and thus also much more robust. The 613X has a chronograph clutch gear/wheel, which runs when the chronograph runs. If you stop the chronograph the clutch stops working and pressure is added on the clutch till it breaks. Those clutches are the main aspect of the watch, so if it breaks the watch is fucked, and no aftermarket replacements for this.

Spencer K. explains the latter better then me.

I actually thought about getting a 7016 but I'm not a huge fan of the Monaco design, and the round ones are even rarer than 7018s (which in turn are rarer than 7015s). Still, the atacked register is something REALLY special, because for a while I think Seiko was the only manufacturer that had actually accomplished it. Omega and Patek Pahjeet didn't come out with stacked registers until about 20 years later.

Surprisingly (or perhaps unsurprisingly), Asian chicks don't care about your mechanical watch unless it has a Rolex crown or an Omega cockring on it. Decent watches, hilariously overpriced. Boring designs.
>>
>>54602655
Complete normie brand, mostly bought as status symbols. Some very bad designs.
But they're actually really good watches, super well made. They're never amazing, as they're mostly tool watches without complications that riff on the same old designs. But for what they are, there isn't much that competes.

No. It's boring.

what's the watch?

>cheapest mechanical chronograph
The cheapest 'anything' will always break. The fact it's also copying another brand makes it terrible. The whole point of owning a mechanical watch as opposed to a cheap quartz IMO is to have a nicely crafted item that will last. Chinese copies go against everything horology stands for and is therefore dog shit tier garbage.

What's the best watch currently on orbit?
>>
>>54602710
Not really. The plating will show scratched and eventually flake. Plating is almost never a good idea.

Soviet movements are generally tempered harder than Western movements. Of course this makes it more brittle. A part either snaps or it doesn't but it won't bend.

Get either the Milgauss or the Pepsi GMT. These are the only two that aren't boring.

What kind of watch would The Batman be wearing in 1939?

I like the Milgauss but without the green sapphire. Pepsi GMT looks good but i would prefer to buy a new model. I like the no date Sub too.

There is a current Pepsi GMT, though it's all white gold, not SS.

Don't know how white gold compares to SS, is it a step up or a step back (apart from price and bling)?

Chap here who was asking about lume painting in previous thread.

way. So in a word, yes, they're willing and able to do lume painting. Asked about pricing, they're going to get around to ringing up, as it's not something they get asked to do very often, if ever, so they can't provide a rough estimate like they can for general servicing or dial restorations.

Tomorrow I got an oral exam in watchmaking and I'll have to wear a suit. Should I wear a vintage gold-plated watch with silver dial, and black leather strap, or an F-91W on a green nato?
>>
>>54603072
Depends on the suit, and general formality of the occasion.

The implication of a vintage could go one of two ways.
One, you like watches.
The other, you're a tryhard hipster who wears shit because why not.

F-91 in itself goes with just about anything, not 100% sure on the green nato though.

The current pepsi is Grail tier, but way over my budget. looking to spend around 8k

>>54602958

I went to a Rolex dealer and they didn't have any GMTs out and I asked if they had any and the lady said yes and showed me the yacht masters. I didn't say anything.
