Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Masterrace T420s reporting in
Should we put this link in the OP as well next time? It gets posted almost every thread anyway
https://support.lenovo.com/en/documents/hf004122
What is the difference between a T430 with the keyboard swap and a T420? Any other noticeable flaws? I'm considering getting one.
>>54593053
I think 5 keys aren't functional
The other difference is that the T430 is faster in general and has USB 3.0 ports (though the T420s has those too)

How the fuck are they relevant?
I'm really looking forward to buying a thinkpad with that EPP discount, but I'm afraid when it comes time to purchase, it'll be gone. Someone tell me if this is something I should be concerned about, please.
Is there something I could put in my ExpressCard 34 Slot? Like a SSD or USB 3.0 slots?

lets hope it aint fucked up
I've finally got the hang of drawing and shading on the adhesive-less IPS X61t I bought for fifty burgerbucks in 2014... After trying to replace it. Issues I hit after using the X220t for two days:
>Accuracy issues on edges, everyone knows this one
>Weak magnet instead of latch, would be fine if not for the swivel hinge, which makes the machine feel "slackjawed" while it's shut.
>No increased resolution available, though the displayport is a fantastic asset
>The IPS panel provides great color, but has absolutely abhorrent image retention if something onscreen is still for too long. Not good if you leave chat windows open, and certainly a pain in the ass when trying to clean up your sketches.
>Power consumption sometimes causes the battery to die sooner than the X60/X61 tablets! While it is faster, the issue persists even if turbo mode is disabled in the advanced BIOS settings. The slice is an option, but the six-cell battery protrudes enough to be a nine-cell thanks to an odd design. Both of the batteries in the test were genuine and still at 99% design capacity.
>The machine's build quality, other than having no latch, is outstanding. However, the process of swapping the WLAN card uses about five times as many screws as in the T420.
>Stylus randomly stops working for a couple seconds at a time. Extremely cumbersome to draw lines.
My purpose here isn't to rant or demonize this machine. I just want to ask: Does anyone with a 200-series tablet have these problems too? I've been reading through the German ThinkWiki and see something about the hinge's footprint on the display bezel being "keystone-shaped".
>>54593053
From what I remember, the T430's firmware is more stingy with modified BIOS and Hong Kong batteries. No issues if you can get OEM batteries cheap and don't need a WLAN whitelist removal. If you're like me and dual-boot OS X with Debian, I'm guessing it wouldn't turn out well.
>>54594256
I've never used an eGPU myself, but I'd like to ask if it's a complete fucking asspain to have the VGA driver for a desktop card installed on a laptop whilst only using such a card sometimes. I'm guessing it'd be a complete hindrance to portability, needing to switch kernel-mode drivers to "undock" the machine.
>>54593069
>USB 3.0 ports
If they're that big a deal I have an expresscard USB 3.0 card for my T420. It's not a huge deal though as I rarely end up using it.
>>54595336
Off the top of my head, the only thing ever requiring USB 3.0 is the Macbook Air external optical drive. I have absolutely no idea why you'd need to use it unless you have an X-series without a dock and no way to dd the disc onto a flash drive.
>>54595355
Yeah I have an external 2.5/3.5" HDD dock for my desktop so If I want to transfer a large batch of files to my thinkpad i just pop the SSD/HDD out and transfer things that way. Or I do a network transfer.
For me personally USB 3.0 is rather useless on a thinkpad. Though obviously im sure others would use it all the time.
What are some useful Express card add-ons?
>>54595391
expresscard to PCI-E for eGPU is pretty neat, but more of a science experiment than a real full time use project.
hey faggets
I'm about to buy a used 14" thinkpad (T430). Thing is, that most used 14" laptops have 1366x768 resolution. Do you guys think suck a low resolution is fine for a 14" lap, or should I spent ~100€ more for a 1920x1080 panel?
>>54595426
T430 keyboard makes me cry dragon tears.
T420 is last good T series.
I have 1600x900 on my T420 and think 768p would be too small. FHD would be better than 1600x900, but it's a pain in the ass getting 1080p working on a T420.
>>54595454
Seconding the last line. 1600*900 is good on a 14", but 1366*768 is kind of crap on almost anything over 12". I wish more models like the old 1400*1050 X60t existed. I would kill for an X201 with 1920*1200 or 1680*1050.
Where do you guys get replacement screens? I'm interested in t410 wxga+ screen, but 80$ (with shipping to Europe) plus taxes from ebay doesn't sound to compelling.
What's up with AMD Neo-based Lenovo X100e's?
I see literally dozens of ads selling broken X100e's on local classifieds.
Is this model particularly faulty? I've been eyeing one for ~$60 as a second Thinkpad.
>>54595373
>Though obviously im sure others would use it all the time.
Yeah I use it all the time. I had a Toshiba laptop with just USB 2.0 and it really started to frustrate me. I often download my torrents with my laptop running Linux then transport them to my desktop which runs Winblows
>>54592870
Yeah, next time I'll put it in there as well, although it doesn't seem to work for most people
>>54595663
Is your router in your house just not very good?
I get ~500mbps over wifi and 1gbps on ethernet for local file transfers.
I have ~5TB of anime and another 2-3TB of Movies and TV that I regularly put 100-200GB worth at a time on my Thinkpad and then remove when i've watched. I do it all using network file transfers generally.
>>54594581
Just looking at the hardware that you got and what you paid for it you did well, but considering you'll never need 16GB of RAM and it has the inferior keyboard you should've gotten a T520 with similar specs for less
>>54594592
Nice price, I wanted to order that one as well but unfortunately they don't ship to the EU.
I hope for you it works
>Seller refurbished: An item that has been restored to working order by the eBay seller or a third party not approved by the manufacturer. This means the item has been inspected, cleaned, and repaired to full working order and is in excellent condition.
I think you'll be fine
>>54595733
I get like 500 KB over wifi and 10 MB over ethernet, so yeah, it's shit
Are you the guy who had 18TB in storage?
>>54595840
Yup.
Sounds like you might want to upgrade your local network.
Or just buy a crossover cable and directly connect your thinkpad to your desktop for file transfers.
>>54595872
>Sounds like you might want to upgrade your local network.
The area I live in has shitty ISP's so shitty routers as well or I have to seriously overpay.
>Or just buy a crossover cable and directly connect your thinkpad to your desktop for file transfers.
Yeah I think I'm going to buy one of those, but then is USB 3.0 useful especially, rigth?
>>54595924
I've only found USB 3 to be useful for making a USB ISO or for installing an ISO from USB.
Speeds that process up a good deal. Besides that I rarely use it though.
USB 3.1 with the Type-C connector could change things though.
Latitude E7470 or XPS 15?
I can get the Latitude significantly cheaper
>>54595986
Considering both can come in a wide range of specifications you're going to have to be more specific.
You've told me basically nothing besides mid sized recent laptop. I need specs if I am going to give you any sort of actual comparison.
>>54595936
Well, USB 2 has around 30MB/s speed while USB3.0 has around 100-120MB/s speed so it's a big improvement for me anyway.
Would you know if it's possible to write from Winblows directly to Linux? That way I could skip the external HDD and speed up the process even more.

Anyone with X100e?
I want to buy a T420 in September but I need more specifications because my shopping websites are shit ( Czech Republic doesn't like to sell thinkpads) and Google doesn't do it:
>Does it have a CD drive
>Expandable RAM and which type
>Win7
>Graphics (just very light vidya)
>In-built programs (PowerPoint, Word, Zoner Photo Studio etc.)
That's all for now I guess. I couldn't find the guides that much helpful with this, sorry.
Also, the Lenovo shop said they sold out last time I checked.

They had it listed with the 900p panel and 8GB of RAM, so I told him knock $100 off for lying or i'll give a negative review.
Might be a dumb question, but how do I determine if my T420s has Nvidia Optimus?
Just did a fresh Arch Linux install, I'm not sure if I should install bumblebee or not.
How shitty is the screen of X301, compared to T420 or T430 900p screen? Thinking of buying one, if I come across something decently priced.

But mark it $10-20 higher and lie about it? fuck em.

Also, I'm still looking for an answer to this >>54597793
>>54599236
I only remove them when the product is still new. But as we get used equipment, removing them will only leave a "blob" in the bezel.

I think that if it turns out to be fake and you open an ebay dispute you'll get your money back. The incorrect spelling of "Battery" worries me though. It's also fishy that they didn't put it up like "Original Lenovo Battery"
But like I said, I think the title is misleading enough that eBay will believe that you thought that it was real

Can't really tell but if the hinge were actually damaged it would be the two posts that screw into the bezel or the base that screws into the motherboard tray. Whatever they are trying to show you in the picture looks to be cosmetic only.
You know how the Fn key and CTRL key on Thinkpads are in reverse order compared to most keyboards?
Have you gotten used to having Fn on the corner or did you swap their functionality in your BIOS?
Personally I swapped it, I'm too used to the corner of the keyboard being CTRL.
>>54599721
It was a bit weird at first, but I've gotten used to it in a week or so.
But now I have another keyboard that has the reverse layout and I can honestly say I prefer the one on my ThinkPad. Don't know why, I never expected that to happen. I guess the logic that "FN-CTRL > CTRL-FN because it preserves the usual layout" made sense in my brain subconsciously.

>Hey /g/ I'm thinking about buying this thing,
I see. I hear the Garlic series is great, the one on top of the dog really shows off it's strength, the ultra portable nature of it. The white skin, the tasteful asymmetry.
But I wouldn't recommend the G series, because while tasty in cooking, it's abysmal as a computer. The processor can only do one process at a time (You get to choose between dry up, cook and rot.)
The lack of a clit-mouse hurts it though.
The ports are pretty good, in fact it's extremely modular. Each G-series contains several clovers, if one breaks you can get another clover. They're petty cheap on ebay. Or you can try and get the IPS (Italian Pizza Sauce) model that incorporates several other ingredients/components for some great value, then just buy the dock and some toppings and you've got yourself a pizza!

Don't forget that it's battery life is also pretty shit. A typical garlic has around 291 kJ. If we convert that we get 0.08083 kW-h which isn't very great. Of course it depends on how you cook it but you probably won't be compiling for long on just a garlic.
It all comes down to taste and personal preference in the end, though.

I'm asking because I'm moving to Ireland at the end of the year, and staying for as long as I can without being thrown out. From what I see on the forum it's harder to get good deals on ThinkPads in Europe compared to Australia.
I can get a cheap as hell T430 with nvidia. Is this a significant and logical upgrade from a T420 with integrated graphics? I will replace the keyboard. I want to use this potential T430 until it completely kicks the dust in maybe 10 years time.
Really can't decide between an X220 or a T420.
Guess I'll get both. B^)
>>54602851
I got a x200t, x220 and a t420s
Get a x220, it's the best laptop-styled laptop out of the two.
>>54601372
got everything to work
its a ok laptop
im not super impressed by it
the keys are really close together
maybe if i use it more than ill get the hang of it
im hitting the caps lock alot though
overall if you're tight on a budget but need a laptop for class get it
but if you can afford better options go with that instead
>>54602865
How much more performance does an X220 have over an X200?
>>54602865
t420s isn't the same as a T420 to be fair.
>>54602964
Which is better?
Literally one question:
How is the touchpad on the T series?
I can't fucking stand the lack of physical buttons. Will I get used to it?
>>54603518
Specifically the T460 models.
>>54603442
For problem free use and upgradebility I would guess t420. For mobility the s version
>>54603442
The s is a bit more mobile, but the regular T420 is the easiest to work on and upgrade.
Though the T420s has USB 3.0 and the T420 doesn't the T420s also has the 1600x900p panel by default while the T420 only had it as an upgrade option.
Also the T420s is more vulnerable to overheating issues.

I read this before, thought it'd only happen with the i7. Anyone who has serious overheat issues?
>>54603892
come on nigga brother, I don't have so much money for a new laptop, bit more poorfag pls
>>54603970
well I got an IPS for $250 USD, so $330 just seems over priced for the TFT panel.
And seriously, it sucks major ass, the IPS is the only good panel you can get.
Installing Manjaro as babby's first Linux (except for Ubuntu) on my X220T, will the touchscreen and tablet work?
>>54603909
With the i7 they both overheat, the 420s overheats even with the i5 sometimes. It's also a bit more of a bitch to change the thermal paste on a T420s.
>>54603970
Don't to that guy, the TFT is fine for your use.
>>54603970
Don't listen to him. TN panel is passable, and you'll be able to swap it for IPS easily any time for ~70$.

>or if you have then I assume europe is just getting dicked on pricing.

>>54604092
I have a T420 and X220 and a $3.5k desktop setup ($3.5k including speakers, monitors, keyboard/mouse, microphone, desk, PC)
I wont buy a newer thinkpad than the T420 or X220, hate the newer keyboard layout and that's really the primary reason I like thinkpads, they have full sized keyboards essentially. Well they used to.
>>54594724
I don't know how it works on Linux or with Expresscard setups, but with the Advanced Dock on Windows all you have to do is change monitors. It just werks. You can even undock the laptop after using the GPU without having to shut down.
how much could I sell my used T430 for?
It's in...better than average condition but I wouldn't feel right saying it's in great condition.

This part sticking out in the back means the laptop has a 9 cell battery?
>>54605606
Depends on the model.
On the T420 the 6 cell sticks out. The 3 cell is slim fit. The 9 cell is even bigger. But not as noticeably bigger than the 6cell.
>>54605367
>not BAD, but not fantastic
ty anon, will ask the buyer about that..
And what would b fantastic then?
what would be a good price
I have a t420s with the nvidia gpu. No scaling to ratio options in neither the intel or the nvidia control panels. wtf?!
>>54605606
that's an x220. no.
>>54605606
That's a X220, so yes, that's the 9 cell battery. I have one like that.
So I heard around here that you're supposed to keep your thinkpad's battery between 40% and 80%, optimally
Why is this?
And that you must use some package for thinkpads on linux to 'recalibrate it' (discharge it while plugged in and then charge it all the way to 100%) every once a month
How do I do this and why is it important?
It's running Debian, if that helps

>>54605982
some models are 900p some are the latter
What would /g/ and /tpg/ consider a good price for one of these used:
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/ThinkPad-T-Series-laptops/ThinkPad-T430/2344/BZU
Exactly that configuration (original 6-cell battery) but it has the 12-cell extended slice included and both batteries have less than 6% wear on them (meaning they hold roughly 96% of their original charge).
Just curious 'cause I found one locally and I wonder what you folks would consider a decent price for it, trying to figure out if it's worth the $220 the seller is asking for.
Yay or nay, /tpg/, grab it fast or pass?
>>54605506
You're most likely installing all kinds of unwanted software
Can you tell if this is TN or IPS?
>>54606185
if it isn't actually changing color beyond brightness when tilting, it's IPS.
>>54606185
I'd say TN
>>54606185
TN. Ugly colours, low DPI.
I've got a X220T that didn't come with a fingerprint reader. Is this a FRU I can buy and add on or do I need a whole new display?
>>54606185
99% it's TN, unless the pic is shitty
>>54606295
don't bother, the fingerprint reader is shit and barely responsive
>>54606315
but I want to use it
>>54606315
This, finger print readers have only gotten good over the past year or two.
before that they were generally shit, and even still most PC finger print readers suck unless they're professional level.
>>54606315
>>54606322
I use it all the time on my T400 and it works just fine
>>54606362
but it still takes twice the time it would take to type in a six letter password
>>54606362
My T420 one is shit, takes forever. It works, but its still shit.
>>54605759
It keeps the battery in a zone where it doesn't get damaged as much. A 100% charge heats the battery, making its lifespan shorter. I don't know how to do it on Linux.
>>54606066
220 bucks is a good price. It has the 900p screen, and you're saying it comes with 2 batteries. You can always ask for $200, but go for it even if he doesn't lower it.
>>54606374
what if I don't care about speed?
>>54605638
>Misinformation
The t420 six cell is the standard battery and fits flush. The only three cell battery for the t420 is the one that goes in the ultra bay. The nine cell sticks out.
Please don't talk out of your dumb fucking ass, anon, you stupid fucking dipshit.
>>54606493
Wow, that's the edgiest thing I have ever seen
While we're on the topic of fingerprint scanners, I wanna ask if its safe to use. Can the biometric data be stolen? If not by l33t haxors, but Microsoft or the NSA? Wouldn't that make your fingerprint essentially useless since it is now out there?
>>54606424
So it's just a gimmick with no fucking point
>>54606493
Sorry anon calm your autism, there are two different sized 9 cells for the T420, a 55++ 9 cell which is smaller, or the 70++ 9 cell which is larger.
>>54606530
>muh security by obscurity
if you leave a laptop out, and there's a fingerprint prompt, they won't try to fuck with it
>>54606530
>turn computer on and log in automatically while you go grab a drink or take a piss
It's pretty handy unless you have an SSD.
>>54606529
I was just thinking the same thing. I know it's stored to a file, but whether a fingerprint can be rebuilt from it is another story.
In practice it doesn't matter much, though, because I'm never going to use it as online authentication or auth period apart from personal devices, and even then only as a second factor.
>>54606066 here
Does anyone happen to have original T430 factory discs for a true factory reinstallation or am I just dreaming about being able to get this thing back to as pristine a state as possible?
I remember a few years ago I had a T60 and loved it, was able to find a torrent where someone posted the original factory CD images which was awesome, just hoping something like that exists for this T430 (yes I plan to get it in a few hours).
>>54606729
You can order new ones from Lenovo I think. If your laptop has the original windows oem sticker with the serial no. on it, just download win10, do a clean install and use the serial no.
>>54606768
>windows 10
>get the fuck out
>windows 7 forever
When I say "pristine" I mean factory condition, not some typical jerk-off clean install of whatever OS, you bonehead.
>>54606631
It doesn't matter if you don't use it online. If you have the botnet or a virus, it could potentially be stolen from your computer.
>>54606789
You can probably roll back to win7.
>>54606295
I would like an answer to this question.
>All these people using thinkpads who have Windows on it
Why would you tarnish such a beautiful machine in such a degrading way? Do you get off to the injustice?
>>54607013

>not running an OS for every occasion
>>54607027

>>54607127

If you can successfully locate a screen bezel only, that is the part you need to replace to get one with an FPR. ie, not the panel itself. Good luck finding one though, had a cursory look and can't see any x220t bezels anywhere :/

I love snuggling with laptops in bed. the heat keeping my nuts warm when I wake up in the morning to check /tpg/.
So I've had my t420 for a while now, and I've installed and uninstalled multiple OS's. And ever since I installed Antergos on it I'm not able to use my Camera or Bluetooth.
I thought that erasing the disk and installing the original OS i put on it would work (arch), but it didnt. SO I installed Ubuntu, and it still hasn't worked.
Anyone else have this problem?
