The question was incredibly stupid. Why not ask >>54593165 why he's a data scientist, or >>54593089 why he's a cybersecurity event analyst?

I wanted to do research that could be disseminated publicly. What kind of story could you possibly be expecting to hear? For that matter, how specific do you want me to get about why I wanted to study in my field?

The details of why I'm interested in my area are probably boring to anyone that's not interested in me personally, so I'm not inclined to type up my life story only for you to say

>>
>>54594013
the idea i got when i used it in hs was that it didn't seem very practical to use in an actual work environment, plus the use of "begin" and "end" instead of { } seemed to make it more of a learning language
>>
>>54593837
I would say python would be best for your situation.
This guy has a point with C# and Java and C++:
>>54593887
C# is nice to program in (but only for windows), Java can encourage poor programming habits, C++ is too complicated for simple applications (but very efficient and good for coding that is close to the hardware), javascript has some nasty parts and is purely webdev, php has plenty of vulnerabilities, python doesn't have a proper compiler, etc...
All languages have pros and cons, and many of them are domain-specific. Sure, C# and Java and C++ have a large number of jobs going for them, but I would advise against learning them right now if you want to learn to code quickly and get a secure, well-payed job.
If you want to easily get a good paying job, and start off learning to code straight away (with very little time required to actually code your applications), and aren't sure if you want to go into webdev or regular programming; python would be my choice.

No, they have a competent programmer shortage. Cramming 1,000 hipsters into a JS coding bootcamp isn't going to fill 1,000 job positions. In fact, it will probably make the shortage worse since anything those retards make will now be the responsibility of competent programmers to fix

Well, not my field of interest at all so no hard feelings at all.

But yeah, an American PhD is of course better, and I would take one if I could, but you either need to have a master's from an ivy league university (and I could never afford the tuition) or have a daddy that donates a new wing or something to get in as a foreigner. >>
>>54620006
>Really? I know a ton of Europeans as post-doctoral researchers (not PhD students tho)
Well, I obviously don't know which uni you go to, but I looked into Stanford and MIT and basically I had to pay something like ~20-25k USD per year in tuition if I wanted to do my master's there. Not to mention the fact that getting accepted is also quite hard, needed way better grades than what I ever had in addition to a bunch of extracurricular stuff I wasn't really interested in doing (read: brown-nosing, as opposed to the extracurricular stuff I actually was interested in, joining a hackerspace and making stuff).

I guess some exchange thing might not be out of the question, but for those you need to basically be connected (as in, your supervisor needs to personally know some hired there that can make room in their group).

>What do you study?
It's related to high-performance computing, but not really exclusive to that. I work on a project that is partially funded by the government and partially by a company that I work together with.

I was referring to post-doctorate researchers. You're right I don't know many foreign PhD students. Most are from Asia if I know them.

However there's a shit load of postdocs from all over the world. My lab has a Brit and a Canadian post-doc.

Ah, nice. I've been many times to California, but never to San Diego. I hear it's a nice city, so want to go some time. Mostly I end up seeing the inside of some conference center in San Jose or San Francisco. Such is PhD life, I guess.

>I was referring to post-doctorate researchers.
Ah, postdocs. I misread as grad school (aka masters + phd students) for some reason. I guess I'm a bit tired.

Yeah, as a postdoc I would imagine I could work wherever, because then people look at my previous work rather than my grades from undergrad. Though, I doubt I will do a postdoc after I'm done. I've more or less had it with academia after I got delayed with my master thesis and ended up spending 4 years on my MSc instead of 2.

>Never been to Oslo, but my first day in Norway was the Breivik attack.
Shit, yeah, those were crazy days. Don't think Oslo would be very exiting those days, the city went into full lock-down mode with armed military patrolling the streets that weekend.

But anyway, aside from the cultural stuff (museums, art shows etc) Oslo is really a dull city. Bergen is a lot nicer, so is Arendal.
