I'll be really upset when laptops and desktops really drop them for good.

Those USB FTDI cables/adapters shit the bed 100% of the time I'm doing something critical with them.

Too be fair though if you're working with serial you're probably not fucking around with an old device in your garage probably working with those bullshit sfp+ switches that you can never find a spare sfp-ethernet module for.

Until IPMI becomes standard on everything.

I work with FPGAs, serial (RS232 and others) are still the standard for talking back and forth and running a terminal menu.

It's much easier to integrate into a dev board, or some spare pins, than USB or Ethernet.
