I received a $50 Amazon gift card. What should I buy? I was planning to get a Raspberry Pi 3 to use for a home media server and for various network programming projects I have; is this a poor choice?

There are the most jobs for Java programmers, if that's what you're asking. I've never used C# but have heard good things from people who use it. C++ is my personal favorite of those languages but I'm a masochist. (Java and C# are very high level languages, meaning they're pretty easy to code in but aren't quite as fast, while C++ is a bit lower-level, meaning it's faster but more tedious to code in).

I got a new phone the other day, WiFi worked fine and I was without issues. I went to root it and flashed some stock, rooted files with no other changes and for some reason, ever since, my WiFi signal on my phone is really poor. Most of the time it shows zero bars and sometimes I pick it up and it's just not connected at all and takes a while to connect again.

I'm not sure if it's my WiFi or the phone itself. Any ideas? One thing to note is that I'm in the UK and the stock image I flashed was more of a generic one as opposed to a UK one, but that supposedly shouldn't matter

So I have a spare PC that lacks a graphics card.

I want to use this PC strictly for HD video playback and internet video streaming (Going to plug it into my TV). No gaming or other GPU-intensive tasks.

Now I do happen to have an old GTX 560Ti card that I can use but I have some concerns about that.

The card recommends a 550W PSU, but the PC only has a 400W PSU.
I'm thinking that since I wont use it for power-heavy tasks (such as gaming) it will work just fine to use the card anyway. I'm unsure about this though.

So I'm trying to get into overclocking and such. Just googled on how to overclock a 6700k and loaded preset values for the bios for 4.4Ghz and it was stable on 1.322V (a mere 200mhz oc), just for the kicks. Wasn't stable on 1.328 for 4.6Ghz, well sure. I think that's fine since you can go up to 1.44 (or higher) to try your hand at 5ghz (or say 4.8) so it's fine.

Anyway I did this because the 'preset optimal' by the motherboard manufacturer had set a maximum core voltage of around 1.4V and I reckon that's not so good for the cpu, and I saw it being reached sometimes via CPUZ (1.408V, 1.418V) on stock speeds and this bothered me a bit.

I know overclocking (i.e.higher voltage) can reduce the lifespan of the cpu, but given that I got higher clock speeds at a LOWER VOLTAGE than the preset optimum of ~1.4v(i.e. stock speeds), is it better to keep the cpu overclocked at that voltage (1.322)?

Also regarding temperatures, which program is more reliable, speccy or hwmonitor? I've had some issues with speccy. And how can it be that, say, the cpu cores are (at least) 5C cooler than the 'package' (i.e. the cpu) in pic related? HWMonitor is reporting the cores at ~10C with the package being ~31C while speccy reports cores at ~26C with the package ~31C as well. Thing about speccy is that it follows some sort of OS-reported value (probably) while HWMonitor doesn't. For example, literally the exact moment I try to saturate the CPU (i.e. stress) speccy reports temperatures of ~60C and drops to ~27 the second I stop. HWMonitor does not do this. What the card recommends is irrelevant. Check some power draw benchmarks and pay attention to peak draws. The card just takes a safe bet which is different depending on your cpu/fans/hard drives/etc.

The odd part is that even with premiere and its own window for codec settings it ignores what I put in there.

if you mean the combo pic viewer/manager shotwell might be the option. there's another image viewer I tested that did a similar job but I didn't keep it because I only wanted a fast image viewer.

gpicview is a good image viewer, it can open folders as well.
just looked into mirage, it opens folders and displays the thumbnails in a side pane, like in pic related. offers preloading as well.

just install synaptic, type 'image viewer' and see what you like.

I bought my pc late 2011/early 2012, I barely game on it, I do torrent a lot though and watch movies, shows, anime on it. Lately I've been noticing it has started to do these mini freezes and I'll be typing something and the text won't appear on the screen for a few moments then it catches up. I formatted it last night and it is zipper but it still has these slow moments now and again.

I haven't bothered upgrading it as I don't game, but now I think I should to get it back to performing as fast as it used to. What should I upgrade?

Has anyone seen a mini-STX motherboard for sale by itself yet? I saw MSI has a mini-PC with the new form factor in it but so far it's the only offering out there and they aren't selling the mobo just by itself.

it's split into two parts, frequency (sometimes called "Base clock") and multiplier.

multiplier can be increased freely to its hardware limit and doesn't have anything to do with voltage.

frequency, you can increase /up to a point/ and then your system will be unstable. in order to make it stable again, you increase the voltage.

essentially, adding voltage increases the maximum baseclock that is stable. it does not increase the clock directly, which is its own setting. you can typically overclock many % without ever touching the voltage, or even reduce the voltage on some CPUs.

Not him and I dont really understand OC'ing. But I do know that ideally you only want to increase the multiplier. If you have an unlocked CPU thats all you have to do. I believe that Base Clock overclocking is only required if you have a locked cpu, but a mobo that supports OC. Base clock OC'ing causes a lot of problems. Namely it fucks with your PCI-E and ram settings.

Ok, is just that I've been encoding some files recently and I got curious about this.

I have a 2 hours video at 1080p, and then I re-encoded it to 720p with a lower bitrate, the original was 4000+ kpbs, and then I encoded it to RF 22 with handbrake. While doing this I average 70 fps reading it directly from the hard drive.

Now I'm encoding some DVD's (physical full dvd's) that are at 480p, although I'm just encoding them to have them in mkv, keeping their resolution and using RF 22, I average about 200 fps.

So I got curious about it since I thought that I would average the same fps. Then I though what happens if I just encode I 1080p video keeping its resolution but lowering its bitrate. Would it affect the encoding time?

usually the multiplier is done first, to the highest it can go. Some CPUs don't allow you to change the multiplier though.

After that, if you're still not fast enough, you start adjusting frequency (and then voltage). Frequency overclock scales with multiplier so the higher your multiplier is, the more of an effect any specific % increase in frequency will have on performance. But increasing CPU frequency also increases RAM frequency, and has to be balanced out, because your RAM will fail at a % overclock much lower than your CPU will.

Generally if you're planning to overclock CPU significantly with frequency, you will also need to buy RAM which is also rated higher frequency. This is kind of beyond the scope of general discussion since it varies with what type of RAM you have. Generally, any RAM with so-called "XMP profiles" can be overclocked without issue, but cheaper RAM may not work even at a small overclock.
